Mac Classic II is my baby! We got ours when I was 9, and almost 11 years later
it's
still running as smoothly as the day we got it. Mine is running system 7.1P6.
For a
(very short) while I was running 7.5, but it was too slow to get anything done.
I
recently replaced the original 40MB harddrive with 500 megs....so much breathing
room now! With the aid of an Asante EN/SC adapter I bought on eBay (converts
SCSI
to Ethernet) I can now easily file share with computers running Mac OS X, and
I've
been able to run AOL Instant Messenger and other low-end internet applications
on
the Classic II by connecting the EN/SC to my home LAN. In the mid 90's we had
our
Classic II running AOL 2.7 using an external modem, but those days are over, as
AOL
2.7 is not supported anymore. If your Classic II doesn't have 10 MB or RAM, get
onto
eBay and find yourself two 4MB simms (72 pin I think, but look it up first). It
might
be a good idea to replace the PRAM battery while you have the mother board
out...you can get it at radio shack...3.6V size 1/2AA. You don't have to use
MWII
either...I've had ClarisWorks 4 on mine for years, and it runs just as
efficiently and
smoothly. It'll even support color graphics and images (though you won't be
able to
see them on the b/w screen).
My Classic II has been getting a work out recently too, while my iBook is in the
shop.
I'll look up version numbers if you are interested...just let me know. I had to
find a
very specific verison of AIM to be able to chat, and to do any of the networking
you
have to find the latest version of Apple's networking software that is supported
on
System 7.1.
