i everybody,
my name is valentin, im 19 years
old and im from germany and im very interested in
cyberculture. I´ve just read the book odysee in cyberspace
written by john seabrook. I think it is a great book. He
talks most of the time about a community which is
called the WELL.
Has anyone ever had some experience
with this
community. Do you think that paying for a
membership in a online community does make the
community
itself better??

bye
valentin
) Is communication one of your primary uses of
the internet? If not, what is? If so, with whom do
you communicate with?
* no, i personally use it to
learn things. but i do have a homepage set up so family
and friends can see what i am up to.
)Has the Net,
through whatever application you prefer to communicate
with, allowed you reach out to new people, establish
relationships and develop a sense of community? How, and how do
these relationships compare to RL ones?
*yes,
especially recently, i introduced myself to a community
called electric minds, extensive 'conferences' on many
subjects. personally i like the computer relationships a
lot because i can talk or write to them anytime. real
life, i am lacking in friendships, and when i need
them, they don't always know what to say to ease
whatever i am feeling at the time.
3)If you have become
involved in a community online, how has it impacted your
life? How did you first become involved? WOuld you
consider yourself the same person you were when you joined
or do you feel your experiences within the community
have changed you, your views, or the way you interect
with ppl on or off-line?
*the different
communities, clubs and people refer me to other web pages of
interest and learning, i always want more input, i eat up
the net, i love it. first got involved in a bbs
before the web, loved chatting and meeting people
(including my husband), and playing games with other users,
and the fact that i was mobile, could do it from
almost any computer). i am the same person, but i have
more couth and tact than i find in other newbies to
the web (the bbs trained me -so i was ready for the
web).
reetings,

My name is Daenea and I
recently joined this virtual community. Other than an
insatiable curiosity and a sincere love for meeting new
people online, one particular thing prompted me to
venture into your domain: my sociology class.

Next
week, I'm giving a presentation on virtual communities,
a topic near and dear to my heart. I have many
opinions on this topic, ones I'd love to debate and
discuss, but I felt it would be in objectivities best
interest to request feedback from others that are involved
in virtual communities.

Hi. Nice to meet
you.

If anyone would like to respond to the following
questions, I would greatly appreaciate it. You can email me
privately if you prefer at Daenea@... Thank
You.

1) Is communication one of your primary uses of the

rather general, and I know in some ways personal, but
any feedback is appreciated and would be mentioned in
my presentation anonymously if you prefer. Thank you
again.

Dae
Daenea@...
ey guys! tuesday i'm launching my new project,
which is basically a gateway site that points the way
to sites that promote community on the internet and
help people learn how to web publish, as well as sites
that are designed really well, etc.

we'll also
be using it the explore the internet as an artistic
medium, which should be interesting.

for the first
site review, i gave an overview of the Yahoo! Clubs,
for example.

anyway, please come by and check
it out, i'm soliciting feedback wherever i can find
it. if you have any questions or comments on the site
feel free to drop me a line! the URL to enter the rest
of the site is http://www.mindcrime.org/index1.html
. . we aren't officially "open" yet, so it's not
linked from the front page.

- dave
i, Fred...
I've found the Excite communities
to be very good...Still a few bugs to work
out...They are still considered BETA...
I have surfed
around quite abit and the communities that seem to be
taking off and attracting members are the adult and sex
oriented ones...Go figure!!!
eed computer help join the computer help club. I or other members can give you
advice anytime. Also looking for people with good computer knowlegde as
cofounder
i everybody. I looked at Excite but it seemed
confusing compared to here. Is anyone else here watching
the meltdown goin on in the Conflict Online Club
here?

It looks like a bunch of outcast talking about a
community they are part of. Nasty stuff going on
there.

Where is everybody here?
am one of those who currently as a community of
1 at Excite. :-) we are going to using it for a
class in a week or so though. It does seem to take a
while to get a community going. Has anyone read Hagel
and Armstrong's "Net Gain" about online
communities--specifically, the for profit kind?

I am curious about
which Excite communities seem to be taking off and why?
ey guys! i'm new to the yahoo! communities, this
is my second one. the first one was started for my
project that i'm working on so my friends and i can
discuss ideas and post links and chat about the new
things we're doing, but i thought i'd join this one as
well since the focus of mindcrime.org is to foster and
promote a sense of community on the
internet.

looking forward to future discussions :)

- dave
i, Rich and all you other members....
I have
been playing around with the Excite communities for
about a week now...It is in beta with a few problems
that pop up occassionally but all in all a very good
community...It's better then these Yahoo! Clubs in some ways...a
nice feature that I don't see here in Yahoo!---the
ability to set up multiple threads in the discussion
forums...also upload pictures area, etc...
The bad thing
I've found so far is that it's beta...so far there are
about 1000 communities there...but most only have 1
member, the founder...Most of the communities don't have
much content...and not many people are contributing at
this point....A few have reached a critical mass and
seem to be taking off....I have created several of my
own and jouned several others...couple them with a
large web page space like geocities and you have a
great foundation for building a community....I shall
have to look around and play with Yahoo! and see what
these clubs have to offer...
Bye for now....look
forward to contributing in the future...
anagement professor at Ferris State--our master's program
not only looks at virtual communities from an
academic point of view but we are developing our own
community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
'm currently student in Belgium (Europe) and I'm looking for informations - for
my thesis - about "How to trace people on the Net".
Could you help me ?
Thanks Cedric.
nternet communities - what's the next step? Are
we all trying to be another Yahoo or AOL but better?

Don't get me wrong, I think the Internet's made great
strides in creating & sustaining thriving online
communities. Just adding my .02 cents.
think it's interesting that they are focusing
on communication instead of personal publishing, and
emphasizing private ("gated") communities over public
communities.

Having more competitors in the space will
help to keep us all on our toes! Bring 'em on! :-)
eoCities is still the best online community there is. These two may be doing
some new and finally recognizing the potential of community, but they have a
long way to go to catch Geo.
