For those who may be interested: my Ph.D. thesis, entitled "Code-switching e
identità: pratiche discorsive di famiglie italiane in paesi anglofoni"
("Code-switching and identity: discursive pratices of italian families in
Englis-speaking countries"), is available for free download here:
http://etd.adm.unipi.it/theses/available/etd-09052007-125152/
Unfortunately, it is only in Italian, but I hope I will be able to publish
some excerpts in English soon.
This is an abstract in English:
The subject of this dissertation is the relationship between code-switching
and the discursive displaying of identities (particularly ethnic ones).
Using the methodologies of conversation analysis and other interactionist
approaches (interpretive sociolinguistics, discursive psychology, narrative
analysis, symbolic interactionism), I analyze about 30 hours of spontaneous
interaction, videotaped in 10 families of Italian immigrants in Australia and
U.S.A.
I support a notion of identity as a discursive constuct, negotiated and made
relevant by the participants in the interaction through various means, including
language alternation.
I also argue that the language chosen for the interaction depends only
partially on macro-social factors, and is significatively conditioned by local
and contextual elements.
