Hi, All,
I am really excited about this. Can't beat it for the price.
During what hours will the Code Camp actually take place and is there
direction to the particular building or location on the Reed campus
were we will all meet, at least initially (sign-in, etc.)?
Thanks.
Hello all.
Will anyone else have any Significant Others (wives, husbands,
girl/boy friends, large pets etc.) coming along to code camp? I know
Zman mentioned his girlfriend was going to be coming along.
Would anyone be interested in having the S.O.s get themselves
organized to hit the Portland sites while the rest of us are at camp?

There isn't a mailing list for the presenters (a good idea in hindsight
:)
If you have a summary for a session you've already submitted, send it to
me.
If you have a session idea that you haven't talked with anyone about
yet, check the Tracks page as Rich suggested.
FYI, we'll be publishing the session list later today... almost 50
sessions to date!
Thanks

You bet there's a list, Scott! Just go to
http://pacwest.ms/codecamp/pdx/1/tracks.html and you will find the
names and a email link. If none of the tracks fit your presentation
exactly, just send to Stuart's link near the bottom.

Another option - from my days at Reed, I recall that the school
rents out dorm rooms for occasions such as this.
Having lived there for a couple years, I can tell you that what
you'll get at Reed, aside from size and the lack of a personal
bathroom, is really pretty good in many cases.
Stuart - have we asked Reed about the possibility of renting out
some dorm rooms? I'd suggest Bragdon, by the way, if you get a
change to specify the building...

Good points, Brad and DonXML. The après nerd
thing is tres important.
Is anyone on the list familiar with the
hotel lounges near the Convention Center? Inquiring minds want to know.
The McMenamins on Broadway [1] is also
within easy striking distance of the Convention Center hotels, and it’s
open until 1AM.
You should also know that on Friday
evening we’ll be getting together for a pre-camp social session at a brew
pub starting around 6pm, with Scott Hanselman giving a Tips Talk for new
presenters. I expect some heckling and encouragement from the peanut gallery. And
Saturday evening we’re trying to put together something fun and social as
well.
Brad,
That's been the case for the other Code Camps. It is important to
declare a hotel as Conference Central, and hopefully the out of
towners will stay there or at least nearby. The main requirement for
a hotel to be conference central is the quality of the bar/lounge. It
can't be too upscale, but can't be a dive either, with room for a
large crowd to hang out and feel comfortable.
Damn, I'll already jealous just thinking about how much fun you guys
are going to have. I'm already make 3 trips out West in Sept thru
early Nov. so there is no way I can make it, but it is killing me not
to attend.
And to make matters worse, the next Boston Code Camp is scheduled the
weekend between the PDC and the MVP Summit, so I don't think I'll be
attending that Code Camp either.

In my opinion, there's at least as much value in the after festivities and

I'm hoping that the out of towners can standardize on someplace (hopefully with

Brad Wilson (The .NET Guy) asked where out of town people
are staying for Portland Code Camp. Here are a few resources.
The OregonConvention Center / Rose Quarter / LloydCenter
area is about 15 minutes by car from ReedCollege, and there are a
number of hotels in various price ranges. Here’s a link to some hotels in
that area [1].
Downtown hotels are about the same distance, but generally
more upscale and priced accordingly [2].
There is a Motel 6 at 3104 SE Powell Blvd, PortlandOR97202,
which is about 5 minutes away by car. (503) 238-0600.
The Rose Manor Inn has the closest accommodations to Reed,
but my sources say it has seen better days. If you’re looking for a
bargain, this discount hotel might be the place. 4546 SE McLoughlin Blvd, Portland,
OR97202.
(503) 595-0230.
If you make arrangements at one of these fine
establishments, post about it to this list so that folks can join you and make
it a party.
Local homestays. If you live in Portland and would like to offer an
out-of-town visitor a guest room in your home, this would be a great way to
show some local hospitality and make a new friend. Feel free to use this
mailing list to request or offer homestays.
I'll be coming down. Maybe Saturday night. I have a
previous appt. Saturday morning, so I'll be missing
that days worth of presentations.

Yes. I'd be interested in issues involved in going to 64-bit and in comparing AMD and Itanium for performance and usability. I'll even work with you on this if you like. I worked a few years on Itanium, both pre and post silicon.

Well yeah, kind of. There's always some old
application that's been around for ever that someone
wants to add a new form to or print from. Or there's
some software package that the IT dept purchased but
it doesn't QUITE do everything they want so they
figure "Hey, you can just modify this right? All we
want to do is change this one thing, that's easier
than writing it from scratch right?". Which means that
you have to try and get inside this other developers
head and figure out how the app all fits together.
Where it's "pain points" are and how to deal with
them.
Sometimes the old apps just stop working. Next thing
you know, you're pouring over Apache logs or SQL
T-logs and event logs trying to figure out
a) when it died
b) what it was doing when it died.
c) How to get it running again before everyone gets
back from lunch and your phone starts ringing.
In a lot of ways, working on legacy code is a like
being a CSI. You might not have access to the source
code and somebody might have obfuscated the public
methods. So you start passing in random things and
looking for your arguments in the output.
Hmmmm, I should be able to get an hour out of this.
Heck between some techniques and the horror stories
that I'm sure are to come during any Q&A I'd probably
go over an hour.
You know another presentation I'd like to see?
"Requirements gathering as an art". It's not really
code related. But it'd be interesting to see how other
people gather requirements, drag what the user REALLY
wants out of them despite their best efforts to tell
you that they want an app that "looks like a
spreadsheet".

A typical Code Camp of this size usually
has somewhere around 60 sessions. That’s one of the reasons these things
are popular… it’s like a smorgasbord of content; pick and choose what
you like. There’s also a lot more room to be specific with topics than
your typical event, which I think is great.
Dealing with legacy code and heterogeneous
systems is HUGE. It’s something many developers have to deal with, and I
think it could be an awesome session. A couple session ideas:
“Taming
Legacy Code” – talk about your experience working with a
legacy code base, trying to improve it over time knowing full well you
don’t have the time to rewrite it all… what do you do in that
situation? What have you learned? How would you tackle it again if you had
to start over with a new legacy code base tomorrow? Provide pointers for
others as a classroom-type session, or do it as more of an open discussion
and invite others to share their thoughts.
“Bridging
Gaps in Heterogenous Environments” – talk about ways
you’ve found successful to interoperate with other environments.
Personally I think the Forensic
Development idea is awesome… talk about different ways to spelunk old
dusty code, great idea. I’m telling you, so many people deal with that
sort of stuff, I think there are definitely people out there who would be
interested to hear (and talk) about it. Real world stuff here, that’s
Code Camp… not “WS-Futures in Orcas” or “Cool Stuff in
Blackcomb”. J
Do it!

presenting at Portland Code Camp - and why not you?
I'm looking over that list and I'm wondering, how many presentations
are there going to be? ;) I mean, that's a pretty long list and with each one
being an hour or so...
I'm trying to think of something to present, but I'm stuck. I don't
really have an area of expertise, other than dealing with legacy code and
heterogenous systems. I don't think anyone would be interested in hearing me
blather for an hour about some of the messed up code I've had to maintain and
fix.
Although my friend and I have a term we toss around, "Forensic
Development". Maybe that would be a good presentation? Ways to get to know
legacy code? Methods of discovery? I don't know.

Twenty-three, count them, 23 presenters so far, and more
on the way! Keep an eye out for additions as well as session announcements
soon.
Looking at the list of presenters reminds me: why
don’t you join them?
If you’re interested in presenting a session, send
me a message at stuart.celarier [at] ineta [dot] org.
Never presented before? Code Camp has got you covered!
This is the place to try out something new, you are among friends. And
we’re putting together a Friday evening pre-camp event with expert
presenters to give you tips and tools, answer your questions, and put your mind
at ease.
Oh, yeah. One more thing. Sure we’re going to have
some great door prizes for attendees. But we’ve also got a couple of
XBoxes for randomly selected presenters. Think it over and let us know.
Cheers,
Stuart

A lot of pieces are coming together for Portland Code Camp
v1.0. The latest news is that Arlo Belshee
has agreed to chair the Methodology track. Arlo heads up the Extreme Programming Portland (XPDX) user
group, and we’re delighted to have the association with XPDX.
Check the Portland Code Camp website (http://pacwest.ms/codecamp/pdx/1/)
every few days for breaking information. Tracks and track chairs have been
published, and we’ll be rolling out speaker and session announcements,
logistics and other news as things progress. And we hope to have an RSS feed
for the site soon, so you can keep track of updates.
Help make Portland Code Camp a success by spreading the
word now. Blog about it. Tell your
friends and co-workers.
Cheers,
Stuart
