PECULIAR ACTIVITY OF COMET 107P=4015   Message List
Reply Message #16155 of 19448 |
Dear all:
I have updated the secular light curve of the
methuselah comet 107P=4015 in my web page:

http://webdelprofesor.ula.ve/ciencias/ferrin

up to December 10th. The comet exhibits a most
peculiar behavior with two peaks of activity
separated by about 12 days. The second peak
coincides with the activity shown in 1949.
I do not have a clue to explain this behavior.
The two peaks could be explained if this were
the rotational period, but a rotational period
of 12 days seems to be too large and not in
agreement with other rotational periods of comets.
Something else. It is not correct to designate
this object as a comet-transition object (as I
did in one of my postings). Dead comets
are dead comets and asteroids are asteroids. They
may look the same on the surface but geologically
they are very different. The density of a comet
is about 0.5 gm/cm3, while that of an asteroid is
more like 2.0 gm/cm3.
What is clear is that observations should
continue.
Kind regards

Dear Ignacio. ... On the graph, you didn't provided any error bar. Anyway, just judging from the scattering of the data points, I'm afraid that it will be a...

I agree....I think that this is perhaps a case of "over-analysis"; good scientific deduction comes from observing a characteristic or phenomenon and then...

Dear Giovanny and Clay: 1) I completely agree with you that the scatter of the observations is too large. The reason is that this is astrometric photometry,...
