"Salt of the Earth" has been explained as a mistranslation from the Hebrew
of the two similar expressions Melech Adama (salt of the earth) and Melech
Aduma(Red Salt). The red crystalline salt obtained from evaporation ponds,
is purer than the grey salt obtained by mining it..
Jesus in his sermon was using red salt as a metaphor for purity. The
mistranslation does not make any sense of course, since salt in the earth
makes it unsuitable for cultivation.
