We have two compaq's,900amd&1ghzamd and love
both. First thing we did was max out ram, that helped
alot.I'm not going to say we've had no problems but compaq
techs helped right away.Maybe they read the boards!
Before we bought the compaq's we bought the Dell 8100
1.5 ghz monster. Thats what it turned out to
be--------a nightmare!!! Tech support was
rude----wrong------and-----almost non-exsistant! Two and three hours on hold no
lie
and rude little pucks when you did get someone.I
guess they just wanted the check or something. We sent
it back to dell for total refund---always buy with a
credit card you can fight back when you get shafted by
going to the credit card company. But in this case dell
looked at the log of phone calls and complaints and took
it back. I don't care what computer you buy it's
going to have bugs and it's going to be short on
memory.Unless you order a machine with added memory. From my
recent computer purchases, I've learned get at least
256k or better no matter what computer it is. The way
some of you feel about compaq is the same way I feel
about dell.It just makes no sense to have sorry tech
support and minimal memory. And another big bitch I have
is buying hardware and software and no one says by
the way you need to go to the manufacturers site and
download the updated drivers! Maybe this should be common
knowledge but it's not and not everyone reads the book word
for word.Simple solutions to problems that make
people hate the day they ever saw a computer. And on the
subject of parts crapping out after two years, thats the
way things are made today, everything expires after a
certain amount of time. That keeps the economy going and
profits rolling in. Everone will have their favorite
usually the first one they buy that they don't get the
shaft with it,and that's the one they will always
recommend to their frinds and whoever they over here
planning a computer purchase. And that's the way it should
be, push the one that worked for you! Lots of luck
Hey all,I did a search on Yahoo clubs,cause I
have modem problems with my Compaq.<br>First off,my
name is Brandi.I have a Compaq 5225,with a Rockwell
HCF 56K DataFax Modem.I am trying to figure out how
to update my driver(2.1.2.134).I didnt have time to
read posts as of yet,but will check it out tonite
after work.Thanx so much,Brandi
I have also had my Compact about a month. It has
already had to have 3 quick restores. Also when I open
windows explorer it opens My Documents instead. Had
trouble with freezes since day one. I did buy a cheap
Hewlitt Packard at Walmart and had too much trouble with
the CD rewriter. Have you tryed checking the show
pictures block. I found mine to be unchecked when I bought
it.<br>Thanks for the chance to b----.<br>Desert Girl
Compaq leads the field in regards to releasing
untested, inferior & defective equipment to the
public....We, the consumer, are the gineau pigs -- and we have
to pay for all of Compaq's testing......I have a
Compaq Preario 1200, purchased on March 1, 2000......On
March 4, 2000, the keypad would no longer
function......As of this date, my computer is back @ the repair
shop awaiting delivery of it's SEVENTH (7th)
keypad....Compaq realizes the originally installed keypads are all
defective & have redesigned them....Yet, despite being
under full warranty, I have had to pay for each & every
one of those keypads.....Compaq considers all
consumers as "EU's" - which stands for "End Users"......and
Compaq will not stand behind any of their
products.....<br><br>For those who are interested or unaware of this site,
take a look.......Very shocking company policies used
by Compaq.....<br><br>www.compaqsucks.com
I have had my Compaq computer for a month,if
that, and I have had nothing but trouble with it.<br> Not
only does it freeze constantly, butI cant get it to
shut down with out pulling the plug itself.<br>These
things I can deal with, what makes me the most frustrated
is that I cant view any pictures on my drive AT
ALL.I am wasting so much time with this computer and my
websites are suffering in the process.<br> Does anyone
else have this problem??<br>PS My brother and my dad
both had a compaq computer which both crashed on
them.Had I known this before I bout the piece of crap I
would have opted for a cheap computer at Walmart.<br>
Thanks for listening!<br>~Kat
I have a Presario 4540. Ok, yeah, sympathies
understood. It seems to be getting steadily slower, and I've
tried all their noticeboard suggestions and also the
restore disk.<br><br>I loaded a RamBooster freeware and
it said I had less than 10% free memory (total is
32Mb) and I was only running Windows 95. If I actually
start a compicated programme like Notepad (!) it dips
to zero!<br><br>Sometimes the thing just hangs for
seconds at a time - just an arrow cursor, and wond
respond to mouse clicks or keys. I can't afford to
replace the beast and an email to compaq just pointed me
at their support site, which is f* all use and
doesn't seem to accept it when I post a query.<br><br>Any
ideas guys? I'm getting desperate. "Buy a Dell" isn't
an option
btw.<br><br>i.r.hornby@....<br><br>Thanks
Dell is OK, they are still a pretty new company with somewhat immature
technology. They are already better than Compaq and will continue to be a
contender and dominate.
You can check the kingston web site, they will show you RAM that will
work.<br><br>The server will know if you have EVER put non-compaq RAM in it and
Compaq can use that to void your warranty.
Does anyone know if there is ram that works in a compaq proliant 1600 that I can
buy 'off the shelf'... A particular brand? I tried one brand, and it said it
was incompatible.
Not that this thread has much to do with Compaq,
but I guess off topic activity is better than no
activity :-)<br><br>At any rate, Maxtor is fine, until the
hard drive overheats and destroys itself. I'd rathher
have a nice reliable WD that will run for years and
years even if it is a little slower.
The best hard drive is MAXTOR!<br><br>Even the
cheapest model has a 9.0 or 9.5ms access time<br><br>whish
I would have know before I got my Western 8.4gb,
which is great.<br><br>the worst is the samsung. The
emachines comupters with 2.1 gb hd and 4.3 gb have samsung,
if you have to get an emachines get the one with a
3.2gb, as those are seagate (but the slower one). better
yet, get a dell, or best, build a pc
Do you consider "Compaq" a non-name
brand,<br><br>all parts are compaqified<br><br>I have a presario
4160 in the office and CANNOT upgrade it as the bios
limits it to 166 (the current speed) I can upgrade ANY
other computer to 333mhz k6-2 w/ 3d now for about $150,
but NOT COMPAQ.<br><br>ALSO, I had 3 desqpro XL560,
and compaq wanted $1500 for the upgrade, while the
intel was abit less than $200. Also the clips on the
ram where PLASTIC (now all pc's use plastic clips) so
since the pentium and ram are on a processor board,
raised from the mainboard, if you grab the ram while
pulling it out, you break off the plastic clips, and you
will be hard pressed to get a new
board.<br><br><br>Also, I think you mentioned the proprietary hardware.
The presaro in my office has a weird motherboard with
a riser card for the ISA and PCI slots, so you
cannot upgrade it.
The best hard drive ever is a Seagate Hard Drive.
I don't know much about Western Digital, but my
friend had one and it broke after two years. The Quantum
Bigfoot TX that's in my compaq hasn't busted yet...Thank
God...even though defragging takes 7 hours of constant
reading and writing.
I own a Compaq..it sucks.<br><br>Here is why it
sucks so much:<br>1)S*it parts<br>2)Eternal waiting for
tech support<br>3)Did I mention the parts were
cheap?<br>4)Non-Brand Name Parts<br>5)Parts that need replacing after 2
years<br>6)SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW<br>7)Motherboard only has
two EIDE plugs, which means you can only
have 4 Drives<br>8)Oh yeah, now I remember, the PARTS
SUCK!!!!<br>9)QuickRestore? Painless? Where is my DVD Drive? I just put in
this QuickRestore handy dandy disk and everything is
gone...and now I don't even have a DVD Drive?!?!<br>10)Their
new cases are uglier than sin.<br>11)Graphics cards
from ATI? DVD from Hitachi? What's next? 3rd-Party
immitation ZIP Drives from Acer?<br><br>If you want my
opinion...buy a Gateway...or build your own. I'm never buying
another Compaq.<br><br>Legal stuff:<br>All Registered

Digital VMS was loosly based on the early
Macintosh OS and the Digital Unix uses the X-Window
interface that is a pale imitation of the Macintosh GUI.
Don't support Compaq, the company that did a Microsoft
and bought out their competition in this case
Digital! They are pirates, theives, whores, and liars!
ctually, I think that Western Digital makes the
best hard drives (at least IDE, don't have much
experience with their SCSI drives).<br><br>I have tried WD,
IBM, Seagate, Quantum, Maxtor and the others and the
WD is by far the most reliable and has the best
service if somerthing does go wrong.
f you have trouble with compaq servers, Try the
new IBM netfinity line.... I have 2 3500s and 2
5500s. I have a group that have the 7700 rack mount.
They all seem to be working without a hitch. As usual,
be careful about the bios versions... We are using
them because on of our subsids is a IBM business
partner, figured we would try them out. The 5500 is a good
match for the compaq 6000.
e have two customers who were major Compaq shops
who now say they will never buy another Compaq server
again.<br><br>There was a problem where Compaq screwed up the
firmware on a Western Digitial 9.1Gb drive and is caused
all kinds of problems.<br><br>Trying to get support
from Compaq for this problem was a nightmare, Compaq
wanted this inspect report and that other report, each
time stalling for a day or more.<br><br>They even
tried to say that the customer was using Disk Duplexing
and that they didn't support duplexing. Funny how
they can be on the NT HCL and not support a basic NT
OS function.<br><br>Finally we got IBM made Compaq
9.1Gb drives that had OK firmware and it solved the
problem, with no help from Compaq.
have not tried the bios update to try and fix
the Intel Card problem. It was too easy to put in the
3com card that I had purchased also for a different
purpose. I also Have a 2500. but I am running a Compaq
raid controller on it. If the need arises, I will try
to flash the bios. Thanx for the info.
he system that I could not get the 2940UW
controller to work on was a Proliant 2500.<br><br>Compaq has
started to OEM Adaptec SCSI controllers and even Intel
NICs in some systems so hopefully newer systems and
later BIOS revisions will solve some of our problems.
Perhaps they won't "accidentally" make a systems that is
incompatible with other vendors products (at least the ones
they sell)
o be fair, I have used adaptec cards in compaq
servers. I have a compaq 6000,proliant 800,200 and
prosignia 500. I used the 2940uw and 1542cf and seem to
have no problems. You may wish to check the bios
settings on the card instead of on the compaq box.
(ctrl+a). I have HP autochangers on three servers. All
working fine; I am using arcserve 6.1. If you need help
post a message. The intel card issue is true... I have
yet to get an intel pro 100 or the server card to
work. I defaulted back to the 3com cards which work
great right out of the box with no configuration
settings.
hy does Compaq make it so you can't use any
other vendors hardware in their system, try to use an
Adaptec SCSI controller or Intel network card and you are
on your own, and it may not work.<br><br>We had a
customer with a Compaq server that was having blue
screens, Compaq would not even deal with the customer
unless they removed the HP tape drive that was attached.
The customer bought a Compaq tape drivem that
happened to be THE EXACT SAME HP tape drive OEMed to
Compaq.
