I have a iPAQ computer with 667 MHz Pentium III,
128MB memory and 10GB drive.
I can get into the BIOS setup with F10
After 10 sec. the system freezes(Stops)
and a red error light comes on.
The only thing that works is to turn the system off.
Then I turn the system on
and the I get same problem.
What is this problem and how do I fix it?
Thank You

Not 100% sure what you arte asking.
I'm fairly certian that NetZero uses a proprietary dialer software, as does AOL
and a few others. I believe that while these dialers utilize the built in Dial
Up Networking components you cannot manually configure Dial Up Networking to
connecto to these services without their dialer software.
This is one of the primary reasons I do not recommend using these types of
services, there is more to go wrong, it's harder to troubleshoot and you have
less control in general. There are several sub $10/mo. dial-up ISPs out there
that don't require special dialer software. Contact me directly if you would
like me to recommend one (don't want to spam the list).
Obviously, I don't know that the NetZero dialer software is the cause of your
problems. I was merely speaking in general terms.

Generally SmartStart CD's cover every server created before they were
made. I suspec that you find the newest one you can get ahold of and
you will be best off.
Since' this is a fairly old server I would expect that anything made
after 2000 will not only work but will include any Y2K related fixes
that may be required. In pretty much all cases the newer the better

Hi, I have a Compaq Presario 5062 I got a virus that ate up my drives

Yes, I wish I had come to this site before wasting any of my hard
earned money on a worthless Compaq laptop. Actually, in my case it
is not the laptop that is so worthless as it is the ridiculous and
ineffecient support from their help lines.
About 5 weeks ago my AC/DC adapter went dead (easy to see that when
the glowing green light quits glowing), and the laptop was in about
the last few weeks of the warranty period. I call, explain the
situation, ask them to send an AC/DC adapter. No problem.
They sent a power cord (no AC/DC adapter) to an old address HP had in
some database.
Right now I'm on hold five weeks and five phone calls later. The
average phone call takes an hour. Most of the service reps are from
another country obviously, though I hate to sound xenophobic, I also
hate spelling my last name four times or reading off the laptop
serial number five times.
This is not even troubleshooting, folks. I'm just asking them to
ship me the part, not solve a problem. I'd hate to have to depend on
this awful organization with a PC or laptop I depended on.
I have been trying to restore the colors on my compaq 4090us ever
since it was new. The first week we had the computer while on line
microsoft did an update an on reboot we lost the warm colors( ie:reds
browns orange etc) After restoring c from d the colors came back
until the next time we logged on line then we lost them again. I
called tech and they had no idea but had me rewrite d from c making
no sense to me why but i followed along only to now not be able to
restore colors at all. Over a year later i was finally able to get
them to send me an install disk since the restore disk just reads off
of d. What a pain in the ass that was but guess what .......still no
colors .so if anyone has any ideas i would really be open to try
anything that might

Very carefully.

It helps. Do you have one? Supposedly you can get on your system or else
you're using somebody else's.

> PS: The COMPAQ Presario 4122 has 150 MHz pentium,

Well that is a major pisser. When my Compaq was born it has 166 Mhz
Pentium, 2.1 gig hard drive and 24 megs of RAM.
When it died it had a 200 Mhz MMX Pentium, 48 megs of RAM but still a 2.1
gig hard drive. Some of this was sort of a consolation prize Compaq gave me
aver I pestered them enough times for the lemon of a mother (fucker) board
they had in the piece of junk. They replaced it twice before it worked
properly.
For you, you can do a pseudo-boot. Start up the machine, press F8 to get
into the menu and choose "Command Prompt Only". You can try running your
boot disk from there (by entering a:\autoexec to see if anything flies. You
might not need it really. Just access the Windoze 98 CD from the DOS prompt.
Is it a full or upgrade installation? If it is a full install and you
already have a (di)version of Windoze then you have to rename
C:\windows\win.com to win.old or win.cox or something. And
c:\windows\system\setupx.dll might have to be renamed too. Then it will
identify the system as having "no" operating system and you'll be ready to
install Win98.
It was tricky trying to get my Compaq monitor to work with non-Compaq
equipment after the demise of my Presario but once I got the proper drivers
it works like a charm -- even better than on the Presario because of the
higher screen resolution. Remember that you need enough free disk space to
install a new OS and the more modern an OS, the more disk space it gobbles
up - BE WARNED. I wasn't expecting it, that I had space to spare under
Win95, but under Win98 I'm always trying to find a way to conserve disk
space. I replaced the 16x CD-ROM with a faster CD-RW and added a Zip drive.
This new system based on an Acer motherboard offers a little more
flexibility. I salvaged the floppy drive so now I finally have a "B:\"
drive, something that seems often abandoned these days.
But give those a try and keep your Compaq drivers up to date.

PS: The COMPAQ Presario 4122 has 150 MHz pentium,

Wow I forgot I had this group in my list.
So tell me. I have a pissario 4170 and I had it upgraded with a CD-RW, Zip
drive, and 200 Mhz MMX.
It already had a 5¼" Bigfoot drive with 2.1 gigs on it, circa 1996.
It came with Windoze 95, I upgraded to Windoze 98SE. Anything else would be
too stuffy.
I tried to install an 80 gig 3½" drive and the system would only recognize 5
gigs. A waste of my money so I took it back.
Not to mention there was no sturdy place to fasten it. Was there any way to
get it to read all 80 gigs?
Could anyone know how to make *.cfg files for Promise Fasttrack100
TX2 Ultra ATA IDE Controller for Prosignia 200 PII233 BIOS (P05)? It
seems that the system board recognize the card as "PCI Mass Storage
Controller" but dont detect any hard drive attached to it. It's
really drives me nuts. Windows 2000 can load the card's driver
without the harddrive (boot with system board IDE controller), but
when i attach a hard rive to it (as a second hard drive), Windows
2000 hang when loading.
Can i use any *.cfg files for SMART SCSI? Some *.cfg files are
preloaded with System Configuration Utility v. 2.58A but none of them
are used for IDE Controller. I think without those files i wont be
able to boot with the drive or use it as a slave.
Thanks in advance.

Hear is what I learn after many calls to tech
support. When you put in your quickrestore CD, when you
see the sign "compaq quickrestore" blinking, press
caps lock. When it stop blinking, press the num lock
key. Then it should take you to the language page.
Press english and it will take you to the model number
page. Highlight your PC model and you should be fine.
Many/Most of the newer persario 5000 and 7000
series have incorrect drivers or absent hardware drivers
on the quickrestore cd's. The newer series have
soundMax audio and not ess, which is what you get that
won't work. The only remedy is to request that compaq
send you a softpaq with the correct drivers at a cost
of about $10.60 or you may download it for free.
Also many of the quickrestore cd's are missing the
modem drivers, specifically the HSP PCTel drivers. I
think at least Compaq should do would be to send
everyone a free softpaq. After all, it was their mistake!!
Compaq uses philips cd-rw burners in their
computers and they are nothing but trouble! The software
they used on their older models, "just burn", would
only alow you to write at 2x even thought you may have
had a 4x burner. Also only some brands of cd-r/cd-rw
media would work properly. On their newer 5000 and 7000
series computers, they are still using philips cd-rw
burners. They are now using adaptec software, which is
great but the faster burners (8x) are still nothing but
trouble. The burners are picky about which brand of cd-r
media you use and don't write up to maxium speed. When
recording, it may indicate a speed 8X, however that's only
true if it takes about 9 minutes to copy a full CD. If
it takes around 19 minutes, your only writing at 4X
and if it's taking around 38 minutes, your only
writing at 2X. They should dump Philips Cd-Rw burners and
use faster/better Burners like Sony/Lite-on that are
reliable and compatable with most all cd-r/cd-rw media.
We have two compaq's,900amd&1ghzamd and love
both. First thing we did was max out ram, that helped
alot.I'm not going to say we've had no problems but compaq
techs helped right away.Maybe they read the boards!
Before we bought the compaq's we bought the Dell 8100
1.5 ghz monster. Thats what it turned out to
be--------a nightmare!!! Tech support was
rude----wrong------and-----almost non-exsistant! Two and three hours on hold no
lie
and rude little pucks when you did get someone.I
guess they just wanted the check or something. We sent
it back to dell for total refund---always buy with a
credit card you can fight back when you get shafted by
going to the credit card company. But in this case dell
looked at the log of phone calls and complaints and took
it back. I don't care what computer you buy it's
going to have bugs and it's going to be short on
memory.Unless you order a machine with added memory. From my
recent computer purchases, I've learned get at least
256k or better no matter what computer it is. The way
some of you feel about compaq is the same way I feel
about dell.It just makes no sense to have sorry tech
support and minimal memory. And another big bitch I have
is buying hardware and software and no one says by
the way you need to go to the manufacturers site and
download the updated drivers! Maybe this should be common
knowledge but it's not and not everyone reads the book word
for word.Simple solutions to problems that make
people hate the day they ever saw a computer. And on the
subject of parts crapping out after two years, thats the
way things are made today, everything expires after a
certain amount of time. That keeps the economy going and
profits rolling in. Everone will have their favorite
usually the first one they buy that they don't get the
shaft with it,and that's the one they will always
recommend to their frinds and whoever they over here
planning a computer purchase. And that's the way it should
be, push the one that worked for you! Lots of luck

defective & have redesigned them....Yet, despite being
under full warranty, I have had to pay for each & every
one of those keypads.....Compaq considers all
consumers as "EU's" - which stands for "End Users"......and
Compaq will not stand behind any of their
products.....

For those who are interested or unaware of this site,
take a look.......Very shocking company policies used
by Compaq.....

www.compaqsucks.com
I have had my Compaq computer for a month,if
that, and I have had nothing but trouble with it.
Not
only does it freeze constantly, butI cant get it to
shut down with out pulling the plug itself.
These
things I can deal with, what makes me the most frustrated
is that I cant view any pictures on my drive AT
ALL.I am wasting so much time with this computer and my
websites are suffering in the process.
Does anyone
else have this problem??
PS My brother and my dad
both had a compaq computer which both crashed on
them.Had I known this before I bout the piece of crap I
would have opted for a cheap computer at Walmart.
Thanks for listening!
~Kat
