No, I did not dig down. The amount that does touch the soil attracts
worms and other critters that help with the breakdown process. It does
help to cut out the sidewalls of the tires. We have been using this
system for 5 years.
It usually takes 1 month or so for a filled stack to convert to "dirt"
in warm sunny weather.
