For those who are not yet aware I have posted a picture slideshow that
shows you how to run a program called MSConfig to make your computer

I'm curious if anyone knows why there are some web sites you get on and
you can't back out of them. I've run into that several times. There are
some automotive sites or even news sites that when I've finished
reading or searching the site, I can't go back to my search page . It
just get frustrating trying to get away from some of these sites.
Anyone got any ideas? Thanks, Jim

Hello everyone. I had a message I wanted to send along to everyone so
that it may make a technician's life easier. Should you ever need to
take your pc to a repair shop, please be courteous to the technician.
It is not his/her fault your machine is messed up. While we do know a
lot about computers, we don't know everything. If we ask you a
question, don't say "well you're the computer guy, you're supposed to
know..." That's rude. We don't necessarily know. Especially if it is
a piece of software we are unfamiliar with. Computer technicians do
not go through training on every piece of software that exists. There
are lots of softwares out there that we have never even heard of.
Lots more that we have heard of but never messed with. There is no
way any one person could ever know it all. If you are a burger cook
at McDonalds and you ask for my recipe to make some wonderful dish I
am known for, how would you feel if I said "well you're the cook.
You're supposed to know." Just because you are the cook doesn't mean
you know how to cook everything. Same goes for computers. Also, there
are lots of problems that can't be fixed within a few minutes. If you
leave your pc at a shop and they give you an estimated time of 2-3
days, don't call the next day mad because it isn't ready. I know when
I was working in a shop I worked on up to 12 machines at a time. This
can be stressful enough. Sometimes our entire bench was full and we
had 20 or more in the floor waiting. You aren't the only person in
the world and you should allow a reasonable service time. If they say
2-3 days to start looking at it, it doesn't mean it will be ready in
2-3 days. It means they won't get started on it until 2-3 days from
now. Which means it will be longer than 2-3 days over all. These
businesses are first come first serve, and during busy times you need
to be patient. We don't necessarily know how to fix your problem and
it may take a lot of research. Just like mechanics have to look in
manuals. If we say 2-3 days, call after 2-3 days if you haven't heard
from us to check on the status, but don't call expecting it to be
done and then get mad when it isn't. Unless it has been more than a
week total, you shouldn't be concerned. They will fix you as soon as
they can. On top of things on the bench at the shop I was at, we also
had to leave to go on service calls. So, keep all of this in mind
when you go to a shop. Think of how you would feel if someone did
this to you at your job... Be polite.

Hi,

My computer used to be really quiet. Now there is a whirring sound (I
don't know how else to describe it). This sound happens a lot. Is
this anything to be worried about? I just thought it's strange that it
just started and happens so often. Thank you very much for the help

Hello,

I have multiple user accounts on my computer. When my wife or daughter
goes on pogo.com, the games won't load. We get a message that java is
required. It tries to re-install itself, then says it's already
there. Also the java console opens and lists a bunch of stuff I don't
understand. I have tried removing java and re-installing it. This
only happens on their accounts. When my wife goes on my account, it
works fine. Any ideas?

Also, I'm the administrator for the accounts, but i keep getting a
message in Spy-bot that the issues can't be fixed as I am not the
administrator...have also gotten other messages on other things about
signing back on as the administrator...any ideas about that?

I have Vista home premium.

Thank you for your help,

it seems there's a program (possibly virus) on your computer that's running
what's called a dialer (a program that's made to dial out to the number that its
programmed to dial out to) periodically, without you knowing. i dont have too
much experience, well i have little/no experience, with dialers because i've
always had cable internet. Dialers only work with Dial up modems (as far as i
know).

The only thing I can think of is to (A) get an antivirus, if u dont have one,
and scan your computer, and/or (B) unplug the phone cord either from the wall or
from your computer when you're not using the internet, so it'll try to dial out
on its own, but it wont be able to. Then plug it back in when your going to use
it. Personally, i would do both A and B.

Sorry i cant help you more, but i don't know much about dialers. I thought that
might be a start.

First off, check to see if the computer is still under warranty. No one knows
the computer better than the people who put it together. Everyone who has
computer problems I always tell them to see if its still got a manufacturer's
warranty or some other valid warranty. It's easier to have someone else do it,
especially if they're the ones who put it together in the first place. Probably
cheaper too.

If your need those files ASAP, find some local computer geek (preferably one you
know/trust, or GeekSquad in Best Buy) and have him/her take the hard drive out
of your computer and plug it into another working computer, so that second
computer has two hard drives, yours and the its' own. It can then power up using
its own hard drive, and you can access files that are on your hard drive. If you
look around on the internet, you can probably find some site that tells you how
to do that yourself, if you have access to another computer. It's really not
that difficult.

Other wise, if you want to get down and dirty with the computer, then check the
power supply in back, there should be a power switch somewhere by the power
cord, make sure its switched on and try it again. Try switching it off for a min
or two, then switch it back on and then try turning the computer on. Some
computers have a switch in the back, others dont, so yours might not have it.

If its not that and your sure there's power coming from the outlet the computer
is plugged into, then most power problems for a computer means you need a new
motherboard or power supply. there are ways to test too see if one or the
other's bad or good, but its kind of complicated and frankly I dont want to get
into it at 1:30 in the morning. So take it to someone who knows how to test them
and have them see whats wrong. I'm thinking of that computer geek person you
know/trust. Or else theres always your friendly neighborhood Geek Squad.

I just thought of something else. Sometimes, in VERY VERY RARE cases, there can
be SOOO much dust in a computer, that it can get under the power button and
either cause a short (in which case, the computer would sparatically turn itself
on and off) or it can cut off the connection between the button and the thingy
behind the button, that when it touches, the computer would turn on. so if your
one of those people who constantly leaves there computer on, i would check that.
Or at least just open the computer case, and blow out the dust that collects
over time. (You should actually do that anyways, no matter how much u use it,
clean out the dust from time to time, but if its on constantly, day in and day
out, then its worse than most people and you should clean it more often). blow
out the dust, dont use a vacuum!! I take mine out to my garage, put 10-20 lbs.
of air, at a time, in the air compressor (too much and you could damage
components) and blow it out with that, so the
dust doesnt get in the house.

Hi Jim,

I would tend to think your cpu is toast or your ram is, without
either working properly you'll get that same results. Have you tried
clearing the CMOS yet? BEFORE YOU CRACK THAT CASE MAKE SURE YOUR TOWER
IS UNPLUGGED AND THAT YOU HAVE EITHER A STATIC WRISTBAND ON OR THAT
YOU TOUCH A COUPLE OF DOORKNOBS TO ELIMINATE THE STATIC
ELECTRICITY!!!! Without knowing what kind of motherboard you have
it's hard to say where your CMOS pins are located. Generally they are
around or near the the power/hid/reset/on button connectors pins. I
wish I could upload a photo,it would make this alot easier for you to
find. The CMOS pins consist of 3 in a row, (2) are used all time. What
you have to do is move the little castle looking thing (usually white
in color) ( though mine on my ASUS board are blue) to reset the CMOS
you need to pull off the castle: 1&2 are used for normal running, 2&3
are used for re-setting. Once you've got it set on pins 2&3 let it
stay that way for 5 seconds or longer and then put the castle back to
pins 1&2. re power your tower and start it up. As your computer starts
up you'll see a Splash Screen telling you about your HDD&MEM info
press the "DELETE" key, and this will boot you into your CMOS settings
page. If you have a manual that came with your computer it will tell
you how to set up your CMOS properly. If not, Google it. Somebody,
somewhere has got it on the net.

Cleaning Your LCD Screen

The major computer outlet stores are now starting to carry LCD
cleaners for Flat Panel Monitors and Notebooks that do not contain the
chemicals found in some commercial glass cleaners. These cleaners will
definitely do the job nicely, but you do have to purchase them. If you
do not wish to purchase these factory made cleaners, then you can
clean your LCD Screen in the following manner.

What You Can Use

Water.

Water with a tiny amount of soft liquid soap.

Isopropyl Alcohol.

Hexane.

Petroleum Benzine.

Commercial glass cleaners that do not contain ammonia.

What You Should Avoid

Acetone.

Ammonia.

Ethyl acid.

Ethyl Alcohol.

Methyl chloride.

Toluene.

Commercial glass cleaners containing ammonia.

How You Should Do It

You should clean your LCD Screen display by applying the cleaner to a
soft, clean cloth. Then you should wipe the cloth across the display
from left to right, moving from the top of the display down to the
bottom of the display. If your display contains grease or some other
contaminant, then you should dampen your cloth with water instead of a
commercial cleaner as the cleaner may smear the contaminants across
the screen.

I have a starup problem with a gateway computer that has the
milledium editon for windows on it. I cannot get the computer to
startup. Everytime I try to start the computer, I see the millenium
title page, then the computer goes to the black screen with the
blinking cursor. Then, I get the error message that the computer was
not shut down properly and I need to start in safe mode. But, I can't
get the computer to do anything after that. I cannot go to safe mode at
all. I tried downloading a boot disk for the millenium edition. The
boot disk is labeled bootmec.exe. I put the emergency boot disk in the
computer, it goes thur its setup and then I get :\>. That's when I
really get lost. Ain't got a clue as to what its asking for. I really
would like to get this computer back up and running . Any help would be
appreciated.
                     thanks,

Depends on your computer..... Are you running a quad core cpu??.....
it's just trying to run two OS's at the same time...serious conflicts
are going to arise.
