Carol,

You didn't answer my question fully.

Does the message actually show the name of the file as "file.///" as you noted
in the first message?

I ask this because sometimes the message gets misread.

So, if it actually says "file.///", then it is a weird situation. Normally
error messages of this type will specify the actual file name, so I ask for
clarification just to make sure we know the exact message.

   Hi DAle,
The message appears after everything else on the desktop, In the middle of the
screen. I have Windows XP, and I'm up to date on all the updates, I have Norton
360. I also unchecked everything in the system config utility list. Was also in
Safe Mode to use the system restore.
The only thing I can think of downloading last was the int. exp. 8.
So now I give up. I just close it out before I start anything .
I just might take the tower to Staples some day.

Does the error message show the file name as "file.///" as you noted in your
original post? That doesn't make any sense if it does since that is not the way
file names are normally presented.

Also, please describe exactly when the message appears. Does it show up after
the desktop is fully loaded? Does it show up before the desktop begins loading?
Does it show up in the middle of the screen or off to one side or the top or
bottom?

Start Windows in Safe Mode to see if it shows up there also. Safe mode should
eliminate all start up programs and only loads the bare bones Windows.

The problem with System Restore is if it has been appearing for a while, you
have to restore back to a point before it showed up. However, if the problem
has been there for some time, you will end up restoring to a point that may undo
too many updates and recently installed programs that you need.

Speaking of updates and things like that, what version of Windows are you using?
What Antivirus program are you using. Are you making sure Windows is up to
date? Are you sure your Antivirus program is updating properly?

With a weird problem like this, it sometimes can be a long path to find the
problem. If you can pinpoint the problem's start to a time right after you
installed a new program or made some significant change to your system, you
might have a better chance of isolating the problem.

CJ,

It would help to know the name of the file it can't find. Your
description leaves out the name of the file. So, if the message
actually leaves out the file name, then the problem may be a bit weird.
But if you simply missed the filename, then let us know the name of the
file and we might be able to help.

Hi connie, I prefer not to use adobe products (except photoshop) because of
the constant updater that runs at start up.
I use foxit reader which is free and very unobtrusive Be careful on the

Most word processors have an 'Export to HTML' function which aims to
produce web page code that will re-create the document on a web site.
The code produced isn't always very good or WWW3 compliant, often with
lots of unnecessary code and broken tags etc.

I also see you've asked the same question on a few groups and have

Barry,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I allowed compatibility view. I suspect it must be some glitch
between Yahoo Groups and IE8.
Since I've had other "hiccups" in IE8 and switched to Firefox, I've had
smooth sailing. So far I haven't hit a sit that Firefox can't handle.

Probably a good move anyway but regarding IE8, when it installed did
you choose to allow compatibility view ? This is an option where sites
that don't work well with IE8 can be switched to what is effectively
IE7 rendering.

After additional testing, it appears this problem is isolated to IE8 and
Yahoo Groups. I've tried other browsers and none of them suffer from
this behavior. I guess it is simply a glitch in IE8 combined with Yahoo
Groups. I have now switched to Firefox as my primary browser due to
this behavior.

In the past several days I've noticed an odd scrolling behavior in Yahoo groups
only.
When I start from the Yahoo groups page I usually scroll the screen so it is
centered vertically ( so all my groups are visible and accessible on one screen
page) then click on a link to a group to read the latest postings. Then I
simply hit the "Back" button in IE8 to return to the groups page. When I did
this in the past, the Yahoo Gropus page would still be exactly where I left it
(centered vertically). However, in the past couple of days it has started
returning to the top of the page forcing me to scroll it back to where I can see
all my groups.
I don't think the problem is IE8 because the behavior is not present in Google
groups or any other web pages I visit.
Has anyone else noticed this behavior or am I just "luckY".

Hi again Barry, okay I'll keep this in mind about them downloading the free
version. I really do need to upgrade and as long as I'm on dial-up, programs
such as this I'll never get done. Like with AdAware. When I took my laptop in to
have the keyboard replaced, the gal there downloaded it for me. I was unable to
do it at home.

And you're right, I removed Defender and the little icon still shows up when
updates are available to download. :o)

So thanks, have a good day.

Are you sure you should be using 127.0.0.1?

What exactly is the error you are getting, you are saying you get an error but

Hi,
I installed AVG 8.5 antivirus program
And when I tried to change my POP3 server
Into 127.0.0.1 to setup email scanner my Email program
Windows mail gave me error.
After many tries I changed antivirus. But AVAST antivirus
claims the same procedure (server name 127.0.0.1))
and gave me the same error.

What can I do?

Any idea what's going on?

All they need to do is download the Norton 2009 free trial version and
then you use your existing Norton key to activate it when it asks
during the installation. Another thing that Symantec have done is
really sorted out and streamlined this part of their system, you used
to have to jump through loads of hoops to get to an actual download !!

When they go to the Symantec web site it will ask for details of who
is downloading then e-mail them when the trial is close to expiring -
good news there is that this does stop after the one e-mail, done this
several times using my own e-mail address so I can confirm you don't
keep getting nagged :-)

The windows updates icon ( the yellow shield ) will always be there
and tell you when updates are ready to install or are downloading.

Hi Barry,

I do have a couple of people that could download Norton for me and put it on a
CD, but since I'm the one that is allowed to get the free upgrade, how would
that work with them doing it? I mean, they'd have to do it from their computer
which Norton would not recognize as already being a customer, right? Or will
they be asked for a "key" so they can download it? I was just wondering because
when I started downloading the upgrade myself, it never did ask for anything, I
was already authorized to do the upgrade for free.

I'll keep that in mind about removing Defender. So you're saying, so I
understand fully now, if I remove it, that won't stop the little yellow icon
thingy from time to time updating crucial updates?

Hey, I can only hope that one of these days we'll get high speed out here and
then I'll be like the rest of you, not moving at a snails pace.

Take care and thanks.

There shouldn't be any need to go to all that trouble to scan incoming
e-mail unless the e-mail program isn't compatible with the scanner,
and if that's the case then you'll not get it to work. Which e-mail
program are you using ?

Yes you can just go get the update file but perhaps it may be easier
if you have a friend on broadband to download it for you and put on CD

On WinXP you can go into Add/Remove Programs and remove Defender
totally, it's only Vista ( and presumably Windows 7 ? ) that has it as
a permanent service that you can only turn off.

Another problem may be that the built-in modem isn't as good as the
one you use on the desktop. Modems are now more of an afterthought and
most manufacturers go on the assumption that the connection of choice
is going to be broadband - fine if you have that option !!

Hello Barry, well here is what happened with my Norton back in May. I had this
window pop up after it had done its virus updates saying I could upgrade to the
2009 free of charge. I started downloading it but since I'm on dial-up, after
two hours of downloading it froze up and I had to quit and restart. I never did
get the offer again and didn't know I can go to Symantec and get it for free, so
you're saying I can do that anyway by going to their site? But see, I'm thinking
I may run into this problem again, the length of time it takes to download and
once again, it'll freeze up and I'll never get the upgrade done. Of course I can
get the 2009 version sent to me on a CD but I will have to pay almost $40 for
it.

Okay then, so you're saying Defender is just a part of this software and I can
turn it off and still get the updates for Windows? How do I do that? I use
WINXP.

You know I have no idea how much RAM I have on my laptop but I do know it's a
lot, almost as much on it as I do on my desktop. I sometimes think it's a
combination of being on dial-up and using AOL as to why I get these freezes on
my laptop.

This is the normal Windows Update and covers all of them including the
ones for Defender, so turning Defender off won't stop them but may
mean slightly less data to download.

Which version ? If you are running anything less than the 2009 one
it's definitely worth upgrading to this, and if you have a 2007 or
2008 version the upgrade is just a case of getting the trial version
and using your existing Norton key to activate it. Also if you've done
in-place updates to newer versions these tend to not work as well as a
clean install of the latest one.

Hi again Barry, I think it's Windows Defender that keeps downloading stuff, it's
a little yellow icon that pops up at least twice a week and takes forever to
update. And no, of course not, I don't rely on that for any kind of protection.
I didn't even know you could stop it. I was told by my computer guy it needs to
update because it keeps your windows up-to-date, like the patches and so forth.
So maybe we're not talking about the same thing. I do know yesterday, whatever
it is that does this, it downloaded for a long time and then it said I needed to
install the updates and afterwards I had to restart the computer, this was on my
desktop. Come to find out it wanted me to install I.E. 8. So whatever this
software is, it does all of that.

Okay, so nothing I can do about AOL constantly running something. At times it's
a real pain and really slows the laptop down. I don't notice it as much on the
desktop but on the laptop, it almost freezes it at times.

I have Norton on my computer for my 24/7 virus protection plus I also use
AdAware.
