You can do this without hacking hardware, using software connected via the USB
to 990 cable:

As I recall, you need to install the USB driver from the NikonView CD that came
with the camera, and I recall a bit of a leap of faith when the software hung up
- the solution was to select USB mode before you do anything else, as the
software defaults to digital. Once you're on the air, it should do what you
want, and a bunch more, including mapping out your hot pixels!
Great little piece of software.
