It's called the "mode switch". The part costs about $80, and is not hard to
replace if you are handy with tools.
You can also try cleaning it with non-resdue electrical solvent - I had no luck

Bruce;

What a great "Hit" was your post on this end.  It is EXACTLY what I am trying
to do -- get the 990 under microcontroller control.  In my case it is an
arduino that will be doing the controlling but the logic for the PIC and
arduino are going to be the same.

If you could shoot me the source I would be most appreciative.  Therein I shall
find the protocol that I see.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi,

I made a cable release for the 990 ages ago using a PIC16F84A

Here is a link to my project and another link to someone else who made it

its a serial protocol, its been a while since i played around with my 990
but you either hook up the serial connector cable, which is what the mc-eu1
remote, or you use the USB cable and chat through the dll.

if memory serves its a mono 3.5mm jack for the serial connection.

Does anyone know where I can find the pin out of the cable connector?

Try these guys - https://www.harbortronics.com/

They have products that communicate with the 990 via the serial port and
accept relay closures as trigger events.

Mike,

Many thanks for the speedy reply but I dont see how that is going to help
me trigger the shutter of my 990 from a relay controlled by a computer.
This computer is an Arduino board with digital logic level outputs. I will
use one of these to control a small relay.

Maybe Im dense but could you give me a little more info.

You can do this without hacking hardware, using software connected via the USB
to 990 cable:
http://www.charliex.net/cpix/cpix.htm

As I recall, you need to install the USB driver from the NikonView CD that came
with the camera, and I recall a bit of a leap of faith when the software hung up
- the solution was to select USB mode before you do anything else, as the
software defaults to digital. Once you're on the air, it should do what you
want, and a bunch more, including mapping out your hot pixels!

Great little piece of software.

I want to trigger the shutter of my 990 from a relay controlled by a
computer. I have a spare USB to 990 cable that I can hack. Could someone point
me to the pinouts of the 990 and the protocol for tripping the shutter.

If I can get it going I will post a link to my site where you can see the

I normally do not pass these things around, but this one is important and worth
the read.

We're hearing a lot today about big splashy memorial services.

I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell "Shifty" Powers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darrell_Powers

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the
506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If
you've seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His
character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in
several of them.

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't know who he
was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble reading his
ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right gate, and
noticed the "Screaming Eagle", the symbol of the 101st Airborne, on his hat.

Making conversation, I asked him if he'd been in the 101st Airborne or if his
son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him
for his service, then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and was in
until sometime in 1945 . . . " at which point my heart skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said "I made the 5 training jumps at
Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know where Normandy is?" At
this point my heart stopped.

I told him yes, I know exactly where Normandy was, and I know what D-Day was. At
that point he said "I also made a second jump into Holland, into Arnhem." I was
standing with a genuine war hero . . . . and then I realized that it was June,
just after the anniversary of D-Day.

I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France, and he said "Yes. And it's
real sad because these days so few of the guys are left, and those that are,
lots of them can't make the trip." My heart was in my throat and I didn't know
what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in Coach, while
I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and said that
I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out of the seat and
told him I wanted him to have it, that I'd take his in coach.

He said "No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are still some
who remember what we did and still care is enough to make an old man very
happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it. And mine are brimming up now as
I write this.

Shifty died on June 17 after fighting cancer.

There was no parade.

No big event in Staples Center.

No wall to wall back to back 24x7 news coverage.

No weeping fans on television.

And that's not right.

Let's give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way. Please
forward this email to everyone you know. Especially to the veterans.

Rest in peace, Shifty.

"A nation without heroes is nothing."

Well, you only have to unscrew the tripod plate. Then, access the battery door
as usual.
After replacing the batteries, screw the plate back in and you are done.

Hello,

As expected, the battery cover latches in my two C990s passed away some time
ago. I was
using a piece of alum. cut to size and screwed to the tripod socket, as usual,
to hold the
cover in position. Useful, but not perfect, as I still needed some way to fix
the camera to my
tripod. So, I removed the metal plate and attached a Manfrotto plate to the
tripod socket.
Now I have the door securely locked in place, I can mount the camera on the
tripod and, as a
bonus, I finally found a convenient place to tie the lens cover cord.

Hi ! I have 2 spare metal plates to secure broken 990 battery
doors. You secure the plate to the tripod socket with supplied screw.
The plate will keep the battery door from opening with the batteries
inside. Primitive, but a workable solution. I paid $ 20.00 each via the
internet. I will sell for $ 10.00 each including shipping. Will only
ship within the United States. No exceptions. PLEASE CONTACT ME
PRIVATELY.

Thanks for all replies! I will indeed try to find one on ebay fore a
replacement. I did the battery door thing last year before I got my
S10.

Don't get me wrong, I love the S10 but this 990 still takes decent
photo's and I love having it as a backup. The one thing I could
always count on with these camera's is the instant snap. Two friends
have...crap,can't think of the brand, but the same camera, a popular
one. I tried to use one and to have to wait a pronounced amount of
time after you hit the button for the shutter to snap is
unacceptable. A friend was over last night and was looking at buying
a Casio. All I told her was to check the shutter speed. I didn't know
anything about the camera but to replace the aggravation of the one
she had, check the shutter speed before buying.

I would also like to repair it and give it to my aunt to use to take
photo's to sell things on craigslist. If it was my first foray into
digital camera's, (the 990)I think I would be pleased with the 990.

Just sad to see it unusable so may try one more time to repair,
thanks for the comments!

As for the moisture, it's been almost a year now since it was left
outside. I would think, but could be wrong, that it has had time to
dry. And this new behavior on the button is totally different than
what it did at first.

Does the freezer work for cell phones too? I would think it would
freeze the moisture but by your reply, it sounds like perhaps it
evaporates before it has a chance to freeze?
