It's possible you are experiencing the SUDS issue (Suddenly USB Doesn't Sync).
I bought a Torx T-5 driver just for that reason. The easiest way to confirm
the issue is to put another Palm like my Tungsten C into the same cradle and
see if there is a response from the computer after pushing the HotSync button.
If there is I'd cancel the sync at the "Pick the User..." screen and proceed
with the SUDS procedures. Basically it is to backup the device to a card, open
the back to disconnect the battery, re-assemble and restore the data. It is a
common problem with the m5xx series wether or not Palm admits to it! Random
static charges cause the USB controller chip to stop working. See this site
