Sorry to be of no help, but in almost 2-1/2 yrs my IIIx has never had a snowy screen. Maybe the screen has just "died". have you asked Palm for a price estimate to repair it? Mine seems to be getting slower to turn on, that is, the time between pressing the on button and characters appearing on the screen is lengthening.
At least once a day I get a snowy screen when I go to turn on my Palm IIIx. In the distant past when I had this problem, a hard reset was required and I lost all data on my Palm. Now I just need to do a soft reset and I do not lose data.
I have recently done a hard reset and restored all of my data from the desktop. I was having other problems prior to restoring all data but those difficulties seem to be replaced by the snowy screen.

Hi Lou, For whatever it is worth, I use ACT! and ACT! Link 2.0 with a Palm III xe and it works exactly as I expect - including customising which fields go where. So, I have no help except to say that I know that it works correctly in my world. Woody

Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks, Lou Welt

Hi. I know this is very basic, but it has bugged me for a long
time... my contacts in Outlook are sorted by Company Name. When they
are in the address book in my Handspring some sort by co. name, some
by the name of the contact. It makes it hard to find contacts. Does
anyone have a suggestion on how to correct this? I may just be doing
something wrong. thanks!!!

Thanks every one for all the input on the problem of
the alarms not sounding when the Palm is off. I
upgraded to 3.3 OS and decided it was fixed, but since
I also put in new batteries, I'm not sure the problem
is over. Guess I'll just wait and see.

Just found this on the PIMLICOSOFTWARE.COM site:
A new problem has appeared -- the alarm does not sound unless my unit is
powered on. Why is this?
This is a known flaw in the Version 3.1 Palm OS that runs on Palm IIIx, IIIe
and V organizers. This problem has now been acknowledged by Palm Computing and
have NOTHING to do with any third party software.
This problem has NOT been fixed. Palm Computing does know about this issue. A
discussion with some OS programmers at Palm indicates that the problem is
caused by the Palm OS thinking that the battery level is much lower than it
really is. As a result, the Palm OS thinks there is insufficient power to turn
the machine on or ring the alarm and intentionally avoids doing that as a
power-conservation measure.
It appears that this is less likely to happen if you keep the batteries
charged up (which is probably why Palm V users see this less often as they
tend to top up their Lithium Ion battery all the time). A soft reset will
temporarily "fix" the problem, but it will come back. OS 3.3 definitely has
the same bug. Hopefully, Palm Computing will release an OS update fix for it
at some point in the future. If you do a soft reset, make sure the batteries
are FULLY CHARGED first.

I have recently done a hard reset and restored all of my data from the desktop. I was having other problems prior to restoring all data but those difficulties seem to be replaced by the snowy screen.
I have been told (but have not personally confirmed) that the "late alarms"
will happen after installing 3rd party software through the Install
application, and that doing a soft reset (paperclip reset) will cure the
problem.
Again, I have no personal knowledge of this working, so YMMV and probably
will.

This is the day that the Lord has made;
Let us rejoice and be glad in it -- Psalm 118:24
This was just announced about an hour ago - Handspring is coming out
with a couple PDA/phone combos called the Treo 180k and Treo 180g.
Not sure what the difference is between the two models, but my guess
is that one might be for CDMA systems and the other for GSM. This
thing looks great, kinda like a Visor Edge merged with the keyboard
from a RIM device. No word on pricing or availability. Check the

I've just continued to go to Preferences and re-set it when necessary, but
sure would like a more permanent fix!

Your alarm database is probably corrupted. I know there's a way to forcably
rebuild it, but I don't remember what it is. Try searching through the
message archives of the DateBk3/4 YahooGroup and see if they have
something.

Under the Preferences/General menu there are options to turn the sound and alarms off. However, it doesn't sound (no pun intended) like that is your problem. My guess is that it is your "geeksounds" hack or another recently installed software program on your Palm causing conflict. My suggestion would be to first uninstall the "geeksounds" to see if that solved your problem. Even though it seemed harmless before you may not have had all the additional software programs and hacks installed that you have now. If this doesn't solve your problem, then one by one uninstall your other recently installed programs to see if you get back your alarm sounds.
The worst scenario is you could use this as an excuse to treat yourself to a new PDA. My wife just purchased a Sony Clié 610 and she fell in love with the high-resolution color screen.

Russell was actually asking this for me, since I'm the one who does a
lot of reading on the Palm and I was fed up with not being able to
fit books onto my Palm V. I bought a Sony Clie 610 at your suggestion
and all I can say about the screen is WOW! Palm sure dropped the ball
on this one--their m505 screen is horrible compared to Sony and the
m500 is no different than the V and Vx. I loaded WordSmith and it

Press (where I like to buy books) with the Peanut Reader (now the
Palm Reader--they bought Peanut Press). The Peanut Reader does not
appear to support the high resolution fonts on the Sony. Still, the
screen is so much easier to read than my Palm V. And the Peanut
Reader does support the Sony jog dial, which is a nice feature on the
Sony.
I'm not sure about _development_, but usage was fairly trivial. Make sure
the IrDA port on the laptop was working, select 'Infrared Device' in the
hotsync settings, press hotsync and BOOM it worked.
IIRC there was an issue on the laptop whereby the hotsync app looked at
com2, and the IrDA port was COM5 (or higher) and there was a mapping from
COM5 to COM2.

I'm actually not sure, but I do know that PalmOS didn't include full IRda

Oh, wow, is that a loaded question...
First off, if you're going for an ebook reading experience, the same $399
you'd pay for the m500 will get you a Sony CLIE 610, with four times the
screen resolution and color. WordSmith's FineType technology looks as good
as a mass-market paperback on the CLIE screen, and you'll have Memory Stick
expansion, which is now cheaper than the SD cards the m500 series (and the
upcoming m125) uses.
That said...
Palm is rumored to release the m125 in less than two weeks. It should sell
for $250, and will be a cross between the m105 and m500. Monochrome screen,
33MHz processor, 8MB RAM, SD card slot (on the side), AAA batteries and the
same "universal connector" hotsync port that the m500 series uses.
Personally, I think the $200 CLIE S320 offers more bang for the buck, but
that's just my opinion. The m125 will have the same tiny screen as the
other m1xx models, and can use the same replaceable faceplates.
Handspring has admitted that releasing the Edge without a color screen was
a mistake, since no one is buying the Edge. Frankly, I think $400
monochrome PDAs are a dead idea. Sony's new 320 is half that price, and you
can find the monochrome version of the iPaq Pocket PC for as low as $170
online. Who the heck is going to pay twice that for a device without
wireless or color?
Speaking of wireless, Palm is also rumored to release their 700 series
devices later this year. This will be about the size of the m125, but
include Blackberry-style always-on wireless. This is why the VIIx is going
for $99 now. They're trying to clear the channel. I've seen prototype pics
of the 700, which is monochrome, 160x160 pixels. No word on the possibility
of a color 705, but I don't see why not.
Always-on wireless is also Handspring's top priority, but they don't expect
to have a device ready until next year. This year, word is they might
release the Visor Twist and Visor Snap, one of which is supposed to be a
color version of the Edge. Handspring is also rumored to be working on a
320x320 pixel color device to compete with the high-end CLIEs and replace
the Prism. No word on if or when this will actually materialize.
Honestly, the best PDAs on the horizon for ebook use are already on this
side of the horizon. For monochrome, your best bet is the $350 HandEra 330,
available online or at Sam's Club. Now that Blue Nomad has added FineType
to mono devices, this will look very nice. I think the better solution is
still the CLIE 610/710, though. Not only does this have a sharper screen
than the HandEra (150 pixels per inch on the Sony vs 120 ppi on the
HandEra), but the square screen is more backwards compatible with existing
Palm applications. PalmReader looks terrible on the HandEra, but perfect on
the Sony. At $399, the 610 costs no more than the m500, and the 710 is only
a hundred bucks more if you want MP3 mood music while you read.
I don't work for Sony, I'm just a very satisfied customer. As a writer and
bibliophile, I take e-text very seriously, and that's why I bought the 710.
It has the best screen of any PDA, Palm or Pocket PC.

I have one and I find it very useful. Primarily it reduces the number of gadgets that I need to carry. The only down side that I have found is the built-in Palm microphone is a little faint.

COPTUGgers,
Sony's new CLIE models are available at Denver area Best Buys. The S320 is
160x160 monochrome with a Memory Stick slot and a jog dial for $199 (a
great "budget" PDA) and the N610C gives you everything the 710 has except
for MP3 playback for $399. The 610 comes in two colors, a 710-like silver
and "violet", but only the latter is available retail. I wasn't sure about
this, but I finally saw a 610 at the Mississippi and 225 Best Buy
yesterday, and it didn't look too bad. Yes, it is purple, but it's very
light and subdued, a little lighter than the purple Memory Sticks.
In other PDA news, expansion memory keeps getting cheaper. Sony slashed the
prices of their whole Memory Stick line last week, bringing them in line
with Matsushita's recent price cut on Secure Digital cards. Matsushita also
recently announced a new 128MB Secure Digital card, which gives SD the
capacity to match Sony's largest Memory Stick.
See everyone at the meeting tomorrow!
JK
