What kind of projects do you use Maya for?

Following this thread has been interesting for me.. Thanks I wasn't aware of the
freeware..
For those that want to take a larger step.. Dowload the trial version of Maya
from autodesk. I've been using auto cad for years and thought I would try this
module for a few jobs.. If you watch Ebay you can occasionally get the student
training package for about 500.00 versus the 7k it usually sells for.. I used it
to turn 2 d poraits into 3d models. It works very well for this and is fairly
fast once you get used to it.

I do renderings for exterior architectural presentations. I think a 3-D
rendering would sell more signs then the standard Corel elevation that I usually
produce. I find that Corel works well for light construction drawings and also
allows you to create more personal renderings then, I would think, Cad would. I
have never used Cad so I am making a judgement about it from ignorance. I know
it's costs $$$$ which is the controling factor for me. I will investigate the
programs that all of you have suggested and let you know if they help me.
Thanks in advance.

Bill,
What are you trying to create? There are many 3D programs, some are free. As you
have been told, Blender is one of the best known. Frankly I think it is much
easier than some of the others. But MicroSoft is giving away TrueSpace. It was
over $400 USD not long ago, now it is free. I believe they purchased TrueSpace
to compete with Google's Sketcher (also free) program. Frankly I think the
easiest 3D modeling program is not a normal "3D program" at all. Get a free
Second Life account. The building is amazingly simple. Build what you want. With
a few simple actions. I say actions, because you use your avatar's hands to
bend, twist, pull, stretch, and build, before your eyes. Import a photo and it
becomes a texture. You have complete control of all lighting. Move the sun,
change the clouds. Take a "snapshot". Email it to yourself.
Second Life is an amazing place. You are there. Try it out!
You can see things I have seen and built here. (mostly seen, but some I built)
In Second Life, I am Matthew Kidomen.

by the way, if you have heard "evil" things about Second Life, they are all
true. If you seek them out you can find them. Just like in real life. If you
don't do so in RL, then you don't need to do it in SL.
