Dear Dirk et al
Not wishing to resurrect this discussion again but on behalf of BTO I would like
to say that it really goes without saying that we all know Dirk has done a
tremendous job maintaining the database in his own time.
Unfortunately it is human nature to complain about things and expect, in this
day and age with electronic communication, a reply to be received nearly
immediately. Most people involved with the administration of colour ringing
projects and ringing schemes of course realise that due to things such as volume
of work, people and staff on leave/sick and general complications of tracing
details and contacting the colour ring marker, these things can take several
weeks or months. Unfortunate as this may be, they are being dealt with as
quickly as possible under certain situations and circumstances.
BTO have been making great efforts to get the message across to the colour
ringers that it is important details we send on are dealt with promptly as many
projects on waders, wildfowl and gulls rely on observations by members of the
public. BTO always reply to finders of any marked bird and let them know who
the report has been sent to and ask them to let BTO know if a reply has not been
received after a certain amount of time so we can assist in following this up.
It is a good point here that we all need to be patient and understand the
pressures we are all under not only professionally at work but also in our own
time.
Thanks once again Dirk, and you know from the correspondence we regularly have
that BTO appreciates your work.
Best Wishes
Jez Blackburn
Licensing manager and co-ordinator of BTO colour marking projects
Dear all,
After the discussion of last days is here a list of all projects that
are vacant.
We ask your help in the linking of observers and projects. Not of the
issuingaccording of ringprojects. This stays a task of the IWSG.
Here is the list: If you are interested, please mail me. Best wishes,
Henk van Huffelen IWSG

I saw a Herring Gull with a (similar?) white plastic ring (and no metal) at Nieuwpoort, Belgium, last month. Other ideas about the origin of this type of rings?

I saw the enclosed gull (HG I guess) with this small bright lime ring on left tarsus (probably no ring on right tarsus, tibias not seen), [LBL;RB-;LA? ;RA?]*.
I have always my dictionary in hand (I studied French at school ...)
Henk! I was not ironic, it was nice to read that ... for what i can understand with my bad English!
ciao!

Sorry Marco, I realize this discussion was not so interesting for you. It was late and there was a lot that happend. The IWSG has been able to set some important steps to bring more structure in the processing of cr-ringing of waders. I was very hapy with all developments. This was the end of the day discussion, my apologies. I hope to serve cr spotters of waders in a good way, also in future. Marco, can you forgive me? ciao! Henk

I have seen at least one gull with similar sized rings and no metal ring. It was I believe a Lesser Black-backed Gull on Tenerife. If I recall correctly, it had two same colour rings on the same leg - thus appearing somewhat larger than the ring on this individual. Actually, this bird looks like a LBB to me - tertial pattern??

I saw the enclosed gull (HG I guess) with this small bright lime ring on left tarsus (probably no ring on right tarsus, tibias not seen), [LBL;RB-;LA?;RA?]*.

Time to react, because too much glory is not good.
Soon I'l start believing this and asks a
funeral service to make me as stone in the form of a colour-ring,
black with white letters RIP
;-))
The past weeks were quite busy on the cr-birding
newsgroup with a lot of opinions and sure overwhelming gratitude for the
colour-ring birding work I did.
Thank you all for this warm appreciation ... but
writing that if I'm stopping it will lead into the "death" of
cr-ringing is also too much.
Peter, Henk, you always can visit the cr-stone ;-))
On the 11th. of November I have been cr-birding in Zeeland, The Netherlands and spotted a Brent Goose coded
OTRK. After reading the rings, I have been talking a little bit with that bird.
It was ringed on the 13th. of July 1995 at Isvestiya Troynoy, Russia and that's exact 2 months
before I started with the European colour-ring Birding website.
The bird asked me to continue with the European
colour-ring Birding website because otherwise it should be never been reported
anymore and therefore get lost.
So, dear cr-birders, I will continue with the website.
The past week a lot happened and several positive
reactions ref.

Dear Pete,
I could have known, though I didn't realise it, your were coordinator.
Of course I respect your point of keeping it to "large coordinator
gulls". I think cr-community is best served by people investing time
over more (many) years. Dirk is one of the best exemples. Stopping of
his activities would certainly lead to the "death" of cr-ringing.
You can do me a great favour still, without a great time investment, by
stimulating people to take part in coordinator activities. If you know a
wader guru who would like to do this job, please mail me.
Thank you for your part in the job (I had your help indeed last summer
with my Le Portel observations.)
We'll keep in touch!

There are a few zoos and wildlife parks (and probably individuals) who keep gulls in captivity. I think one of the British records of Grey-headed Gull was dismissed as an escapee from London Zoo.
<*>[Attachment(s) from =?iso-8859-1?Q?Alain_FOSS=C9?= included below]
I saw the enclosed gull (HG I guess) with this small bright lime ring on left tarsus (probably no ring on right tarsus, tibias not seen), [LBL;RB-;LA?;RA?]*.

Your point is well made. I co-ordinate the
large gulls which is relatively easy in comparison to the work you do. I still
receive between 0-15 mails per day. Yes, there are days when I receive NO
mails! This is a voluntary post and I am pleased to do the work. However, we
must all acknowledge the fact that colour-ringing schemes for all species are
increasing annually – which, of course, increases the work of
co-ordinators. And.
Let’s not forget that there are colour-ringing schemes for a large number
of species and groups of species where there are no co-ordinators at all. In
this respect the work that Dirk does with the cr-birding website is brought
into sharp focus – what on earth would we do without him?
Colour-ringing, as we all know, dramatically
increases recovery rates (for the large gulls, for instance, recovery rates for
metal alone are between 3-6%, but with colour-rings recovery rates above 60%
are possible). For researchers this is a no-brainer. Why use only metal? There
are two reasons: if you have plenty of money and if you intend to live for
several lifetimes… Therefore, Henk, I endorse your words and encourage
others to help. Within the world of colour-ringing we are all engaged in
finding out important things to do with the species we study. Sometimes, those
who are deeply engaged tend to forget that co-operation brings the richest
rewards…

Hello all
cr-birders,
The IWSG heeft onlags een wisseling van de wacht gehad. Mark Collier has
stepped down and Henk van Huffelen tekes the reins.
The IWSG (Int Wader Study Group) is searching for dedicated coordinators
for a nearly all wader species.
The problem is the workload of all mails reported to the IWSG. We have
to take measures to keep it human.
I would like to emphasize that all ringers and observers would benefit a
good communication between observers and ringers.
That is why I put this mail in this newsgroup.
I hope to find some new species coordinators per species.
In the IWSG we are 120% active at this moment. Yesterday 50 mails were
processed. We work with 2 persons, Jannik Hansen and me.
In 2 days I found 3 new coordinators.
Please feel yourself responsible for good communication between observer
and ringer.
Your work: "adopt" the resightings of the species and try to find the
ringer.
Report back the result: "succeeded or not succeeded."
The IWSG fully takes their responsibility for the waders as is agreed
with Euring.
Help is welcomed very much.
Hope to hear from you. Let my inbox explode!

Best wishes, Henk van Huffelen CMR Officer IWSG
Multiple reactions were received on my mail this morning
about a strange numbered metal clip we found during a search for rings in the
gull colony I normally work in and I am very grateful for these responses, I
think we know the answer now.
At the same time, many people asked if we found any rings
and what metal detector was used. In response to all these I though it useful
to share all this with you; take it or leave it, it may come in handy and
otherwise, just ignore this
(1)Suggestions regarding our tag ranged from turtle tags
to ear clips in sheep or goats. Within our area there are no turtles, no sheep
and no goats, but as RJ Buijs suggested, our gulls may have been scavenging at
a slaughterhouse where “clipped ears” (in a double sense) are
readily available prey. I saw some photo’s and I think I agree with the
sheep/goat suggestion
(2)Yes, rings were found, even though the search effort was
very short, so the technique is clearly effective
(3)Yes, aluminium rings would have been found (but I use
steel…) with this detector
(4)Yes, we found loads of crap also (mostly metal parts
from sausages)
(5)Regarding a good-value-for-money detector, my colleague
here (IJsbrand Galama) suggests a Garret 250:
While
my colony (large gulls) was searched for rings with a metal detector yesterday,
a rather odd mark was found that we have no idea of. Perhaps you may have an
idea
It
is a metal clip, a strip of metal folded with a pin on the open end as if this
should lead through something, aluminum by the weight of it, with a stamp
saying
EB98334
It
seems that the metal has been painted white previously (all over), as if
reading at distance was not required.
Any
ideas? We thought a wing-tag at first, but dropped that idea meanwhile
Measurements:
leg-length 40mm (it’s a folded strip, so the strip in all was 80mm)
Leg width 12mm
Opening on the not-folded end 10
mm (pin length = 10mm)
Sincerely
Kees

It's a bird from the French ringing scheme ! New combination since 2008 ! Ask Guillaume Gelinaud fior the ringing details and life history of this bird.
a friend saw a colour-ringed Pied Avocet, he could'not find the scheme om CR-brirding, nor could other cr-birders help him further. So does anyone recognise this bird / scheme:
For the first time today, I realised it was ringed, with a normal metal BTO ring on the RIGHT tarsi but on the LEFT tarsi a COBALT BLUE ring with WHITE lettering, most probably inscribed ''E15'' but just possibly ''E19'' The lettering is horizontal and can be read from the side.
I have searched the internet for this bird but failed to find it. Any clues anyone - Rutland Water? Speyside/Inverness-shire? Italy?

A juvenile OSPREY has been present in and around my village since 21 October and looks as though it may winter (see photographs on my local blog at
