Very cool, indeed. I've been drooling in anticipation of the RJS
templates for quite a while now.

What's wrong with:
QTE
someone who stands out from the crowd by customising their car above
the standard specifications that the manufacturer provides. one who
should be considered god by all other non cruisers and demand respect
from fellow cruisers on the road.
UNQTE
Should it be "Java Programmers Anonymous" instead? :)

Oh... pardon my North American :)
When I said "regular" I didn't mean rerunning it. Just that we may
want to do it outside of our regular (third Tuesday of a month)
schedule, because it may not be of interest to everybody in the group.
Anyway, does anybody want a session about Ruby development, tools,
documentation, etc strongly enough to actually organize it?
Or should we make it a subject of CRUSERS meeting in May?
To remind, we already have topics for March and April (introduction to
Rails and Canada On Rails conference, respectively).

A co-worker of mine just asked me if I'd joined the 'Cruisers' group
yet. I was a little miffed and offended, as my initial interpretation
of his question was a little bit different:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cruiser
Anyways, that's just something to think about (and will maybe explain
the strange look you'll receive when you're telling your wife/husband
where you're going for the evening).
Alex;
I think this would make a good CRUSERS-sponsored "Ruby skills fusion"
meeting, where the more experienced Ruby programmers can help get nubies up
to speed. The exchange could be cool, and I know I always learn a lot when
I try to teach just about anything, so even battle-hardened Rubyists might
learn from it.
I agree it wouldn't be something CRUSERS would want to do all the time
though.
And I agree you'd make a good preacher for one of these meetings. :)

Hi all,
In our first meeting we had people who already work with Ruby, and
people who are just learning it. Many of the latter group expressed an
interest in learning about tools, documentation, and generally how to
develop real software with Ruby.
Is it a good topic for a regular CRUSERS meeting? Doesn't seem that way
to me. But, maybe we can organize some sort of a demo for those who are
interested. A two hours session during an evening should do it. I'd be
happy to play the preacher this time, if somebody else takes an
initiative to organize it.
Best regards,
Alex Verkhovsky
P.S. To everybody who subscribed to our Yahoo group in the last couple
of days: welcome!
I'm excited about this group as well and look forward to meeting you in March. My programming history is pretty much all Perl, but I've been using Ruby on Rails for the past 3 months or so helping to build a s
ocial networking site (honestly, it's my dream job, and Harold, it's been all positive).
As with you Harold, working from home I'm a bit of hermit and it will be great to interact with other Ruby and Rails developers. I might go to Canada on Rails in April - anyone else making the trip to Van?
It is not the people around you who are at fault. They cannot help themselves. The fault is with you, because you can help yourself. ~ Carlos Castaneda
First of all, I've very pleased to find that there is a Ruby group in Calgary.
I've been using Ruby for the past 4 years to maintain my websites 1st-spot.net
and synaptix.com, mostly thru client side web scripting and meta-spiders.
It's been good using Ruby as an integral part of my day job. I come from a
Perl/Unix/C++ background and so, at first for me, Ruby was a much better
Perl, keeping the facility with RE's that distinguishes Perl but being much
more expressive and having a much better object implementation. And most
of all, I find that Ruby really puts the fun back into coding. There's
something about working with this language that generates the experience of
"flow".
All this time (being a bit of a hermit), I've been alone in my use of Ruby
and I look forward to meeting others who are using this fantastic language.
I'm particularly interested in meeting others who have had positive
experience with Rails.

Well since I just subscribed I thought I'd post my "introductory
message". My day job involves writing a fair amount of
Java/JSP/XML... And in the evening (when I have time) I like to
retreat to the sanity of Ruby on Rails. Check out my blog at
http://cocoalocker.blogspot.com/ for more of my random thoughts about
Rails and other development topics.
Darcy.
Calgary Ruby Users Society (otherwise known as Association of Anonymous
Java Programmers, Calgary branch) had it's first meeting today. After a
round of introductions, we discussed our interests and brainstormed
possible activities for the group. Paul Rogers did a presentation on
Watir [http://wtr.rubyforge.org/]. Watir is not just a great tool, but
also a way to sneak Ruby into your day job. ThoughtWorks Canada bought
the donuts.
From now on, we are planning to meet once a month, generally on the
third Tuesday. Our next meeting will be in the second half of March
(date TBD), most probably a joint meeting with CJUG (Calgary Java Users
Group). The subject of the meeting will be Rails (but of course!)
So, if you like Ruby and live in Calgary, you are most welcome to join us.
Please subscribe to CRUSERS Yahoo Group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/crusers/
And once you subscribe, consider posting an introductory message,
describing your programming background, how do you use Ruby, and what
would you like to do in CRUSERS.
Best regards,

Thanks to everyone for turning up and listening.
The presentaion is available on my web site - www.paulrogers.ca
Thanks

The original plan was to have the meetings on the third Tuesday of the month.
Planning for this one got away from us, and we had to book the meeting room at the last minute, and ended up with the Wednesday. Hopefully
we can do better next time.

Hey All,
Three of us from the SAIT software engineering program would love to
attend the meetings. However we have class until 7pm on Wednesdays
until the end of May. Is there any way the meetings could be held on
any other night if it not to much to ask. Thanks.

The place for tomorrow meeting is:
George Harris Room
Knox United Church
506 - 4th Street SW
There is a small entrance to the Knox United building on the left side
of 4th Street, about 100 meters south of 5th Av. Meeting room is very
near that entrance.
And here is the parking map:

What about it? In David Hansson's words it's "yet another WikiClone

if i get time over this weekend I'll try and get a watir presentation done. Its likely to be very similar to the camug one from November, but if we run short on things, it may well do.
Longer term id like to come up with a more in depth one

I don't think that "Intro to Rails" would be useful. The best intro
to Rails is that video where (was that really DHH?) had WAY too much
caffeine...
http://www.loudthinking.com/arc/000478.html
I was thinking of something with more detail.
> 4. Presentation

In no particular order, I'd love it if somebody could show me how the
following things work:
* SwitchTower
* Continuations
* Integration with native libraries
* Rich UI toolkits
* ActiveRecord (or some other form of object-relational mapping) in a
Legacy Database Schema From Hell scenario
* Ruby driver for Selenium
I myself could do a presentation about:
* Test automation in a Rails project
* Rake
* Watir
* generally using Ruby for auxiliary tasks like builds, testing, data
migration, continuous integration etc in Java or .NET projects.
Speaking of Watir, Paul Rogers is obviously the best guy to talk about
it (he wrote most of it, after all).
I hope it won't be another introduction to Rails... not that I can't
stomach just one more if that's what everybody wants though :)

Actually, we do have an agenda. That was my job, I was just lame/slow about getting it posted.
1. Brief Intros - the organizers will speak briefly about themselves and their interest in Ruby - anyone else who wants to can also introduce themselves
2. Straw Poll - Who's doing what with Ruby? Rails?
3. CRUSERS mission - discussion about what we all expect to get out of participation in CRUSERS - requests for meeting topics for the next few months
4. Presentation - this is open, so if anyone has requests, speak up. Otherwise we'll probably steal borrow a presentation from another Ruby user group and run with it.
Hi all,
I've booked a meeting room in Knox United Church (506 4th St. SW) for
our first meeting. It will be on Feb 22 (Wednesday), from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
This time there is no defined agenda, it will be just meeting each
other and discussing what is everybody interested in.
I am going to Knox United tomorrow to see the room etc, then I will
post more detailed information about the place, parking options etc.
See you there!

Hi all,
Just a quick note to let you know we are planning to combine our March meeting
with that of
CJUG (Calgary Java User's Group). Please see their web site
http://www.cjug.org
for more information.
Lori Olson and I will present an overview of differences between Ruby/Rails and
Java, plus go
through building a RoR web application from the perspective of Java developers.
I updated the CRUSERS homepage to allow people to subscribe to this
group easily. The stats on the page say that we've had 239 hits, so I
have to think that we have people checking back often, looking for
more information.
