This is a reminder that CRUserS takes a break from monthly meetings in
the summer. We have no meetings scheduled from Jun-Aug. The next
meeting will be in September.

I know Alex and others meet weekly on Wed for some group hacking, so
if you just can't stand a summer without Ruby, post to the list and
ask for details ;-)

The metaprogramming talk was very interesting. If anyone missed it,
or wants more in-depth info, Dave Thomas has started a screencast series:

I haven't seen it yet, but last month I attended the PragProg Advanced

Dave et all to make me believe that Dave's series will be worth every
penny.

Hi all,

As it turns out, I won't be able to make it to the meeting today. However, I managed to get a fellow ThoughtWorker, Steven Baker (of Rspec fame), to give the talk instead. It's going to be his first time to the library, so if you see a bald, bearded dude in black glasses peek into the meeting room with a puzzled face, be sure to pull him in ;)

Dear all,

We've got a new kid in town, and he agreed to do most of the talking
for CRUserS May meeting :)

So, the speaker is Farooq Ali (fellow ThoughtWorker who recently moved
to Calgary from UK), and the subject is "Metaprogramming with Ruby".

Here is Farooq's summary of the talk:

---
I plan on talking about "Metaprogramming with Ruby". It was a talk I
gave at the Nov '07 ThoughtWorks UK Away Day to explore some new ways
of molding our objects using:

- Object introspection (instance_variable_get, etc.)
- Dynamic methods (define_method, etc.)
- Object lifecycle hooks (method_added, etc.)
- Evaluation techniques (instance_eval, etc)
- Open classes

Most of them will be viewed in the light of examples, design patterns,
and intentional programming. We'll also brush up on Ruby's object
model for those of you who aren't very familiar with it.

I'd also like us to share some common practices we've adopted to
prevent the abuse of metaprogramming and make such code more readable
and accessible to teams.

Hi all,

We are been banning spammers from crusers quite regularly, but clearly
that doesn't stop them.

So, I have set up the group to moderate new members. As described in
[1], this means that anyone who joins the group will have their email
moderated until a moderator manually changes their status.

Let's see if this will work.

Hi Crusers,

I hope that its not rude of me to post this job opportunity through your list (see below). We're a Calgary based company looking to hire some Senior and Intermediate software developers - and anyone involved with Crusers would be a great candidate. I myself am new to the company and looking forward to building a great team.

If you're interested in finding out more, or wish to apply, please contact me directly rather than through Yahoo.

kris.read@...

Sincerely,

Kris Read
CTO, Curve Technologies (Curve Dental)

Curve Dental

Curve Dental is the first provider of web-based dental practice management. We're a successful,
growing technology company that's still small enough for every person to make a difference and
have an opinion. Our vision is to become the clear market leader by delivering a feature-rich and
visually impressive web application that shakes up the dental industry.

We're building a team of passionate, talented developers and trying to create the same tech start-up
culture you'd find in Silicon Valley or at giants like Google. It's all about coming up with great ideas
or fun ways to solve problems, and we'll actually listen to what you have to say. We're leveraging
the latest open source technologies and platforms too- proving that you can build something
amazing with what's out there on the web. We have a chance to make something cool and exciting;
a chance to impress customers and build what people really want.

Candidates for developer positions will be asked to submit a small program or example of code that
they have written in the past, and may be asked to complete a skills evaluation.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Be part of a hard working, smart & fun team
  • Plenty of opportunity for growth & experience
  • Competitive salary
  • Developer budget for education, conferences & workshops
  • New Mac or PC hardware; 24" screen & your own notebook
  • Flexible health spending account
  • Potential stock options & profit sharing
  • Casual dress environment
  • Flexible business hours
  • Hip "open" office right on 17th Ave SW
  • Foosball table, big-screen TV & wii

Intermediate Software Developer Calgary, AB

We're seeking candidates for an intermediate software developer position. A successful candidate
will have experience developing web based applications, and will be focused being a team player and
writing great code. We want energetic, outgoing, driven developers who want to get things done.
The kind of developers who enjoy showing off, who take pride in their own skills, and who love
learning (even on their own time) for learning's sake.

Candidates should have:

  • Experience developing web apps using interpreted languages like PHP
    (or Ruby, Python, etc)
  • Knowledge about 'state of the art' of tools and practices
  • A working knowledge of relational databases and SQL
  • Interest in Javascript, AJAX, DHTML, user-interface design, and 'web 2.0' technology
  • Some knowledge of web application frameworks, architecture, MVC, etc.
  • Some knowledge of unit testing, refactoring, continuous integration and best practices
  • Passion for agile methods, teamwork, and doing things the right way

Senior Software Developer Calgary, AB

We're seeking candidates for a senior software developer. A successful candidate will have
extensive experience developing web based applications, particularly multi-tiered, mission critical
web systems. This candidate will also be a thought leader and a passionate advocate for best
practices. Strong experience with LAMP technology and design/architecture is a must. We want
smart, confident, outgoing senior developers who not only have the skills to do the "heavy lifting",
but who know the importance of software scalability, maintainability and quality.

Candidates should have:

  • Over 5 years experience developing web applications
(preferably expert at building enterprise PHP software)
  • Extensive experience with object oriented design theory, web application frameworks,
    architecture, MVC, design patterns, etc.
  • Expert knowledge of unit testing, acceptance testing, refactoring, and best practices
  • Excellent knowledge of relational databases, database theory, and data models
  • Knowledge about 'state of the art' of tools and practices
  • History building scalable, maintainable, quality code
(and the ability to help junior developers do so)
  • Enthusiasm for mentoring other developers and bringing up the level of our team
 • Initiative to take on responsibility without being asked
  • Passion for agile methods, teamwork, leadership, and doing things the right way

The April meeting of CRUserS will feature a panel discussion of Rails
alternatives. These alternatives will include Ruby and non-Ruby options.

We can still add one more panel member, if another community member
would like to participate. Contact me (Lori Olson) or Alex
(Verkhovsky) if you want to be on the panel.

Hope to see you all there on Tuesday, April 15th. Usual time and
place - Downtown Library, 6:00 pm.

Regards, Lori

Not getting enough feedback on the Poll to have a meeting about it
yet, like we were hoping.

Alex and I have started organizing a panel discussion/demo on "Rails
Alternatives" for next month. Hope to see more of you then!
