Hey all. I'm currently looking for a Ruby on Rails developer for a
contract position. It's a mostly Java shop where most new development
is RoR. Ideally, we're looking for someone with a Java background
(struts, spring, hibernate) who's passionate about Ruby. Oracle
experience is also a plus.

Send me an email if you're interested.

It's great to hear that someone local is using JRuby. I would think that it
would slot right in to any place using Java already.

Despite the fact that this list seems morgue-like at times, there are over 100
people subscribed, so interest in Ruby and Rails is certainly not waning in
Calgary. There are several companies developing products with RoR, and some
consultancies that take on RoR projects, and lots of places using plain-old Ruby

Labrador Technologies is one such company. http://www.etriever.com is our

We use JRuby and deploy to Tomcat. We've had a lot of success and productivity
over the likes of Java's Struts and Spring have been quite impressive. But even
as we transitioned to this environment it seems the rest of the company is

Hi there,

Can you share this survey with your members if you think they'll be interested?

If you've used our popular programming Cookbooks, you know just how useful they
can be in helping you solve all kinds of programming problems. (And if you
haven't used our Cookbooks, check them out on our website. You can download
sample recipes by clicking on specific book titles and selecting "Sample
Recipes.")

We've received many requests for videos that present the Cookbook recipes
step-by-step, so we recently created 4 sample clips that are available online.

Now we're eager to gather your feedback.

All you have to do is watch the sample video and tell us what you think about
it. When you complete the survey, we'll automatically enter you into a special
drawing.* Three winners will receive the opportunity to select a collection of
O'Reilly ebooks valued at up to $200.

*The drawing will be held on August 19, 2009. The winners will be notified via
email. If we don't hear back from a winner within 14 days, the prize will be
awarded to another survey respondent. Winners will have 90 days to make ebook
selections.

For more information, go to training.oreilly.com/videosurvey

Until next time--

A discussion that started at our last meeting turned into a panel
request, so who am I to argue? ;-)

Our panel topic is:

Ruby and Rails in Calgary : Evangelism or lack thereof

Ideally, we'd like this to be a free-wheeling discussion of what
people think is holding back the adoption of Ruby and/or Rails in
Calgary companies. Don't be shy! Come out and offer your opinion.

Note from the !!!! in the subject, that we have a change in our
regular schedule of meetings, thursday instead of tuesday.

The meeting is scheduled for the third **** THURSDAY ****, Feb 19, at
5:30 pm, and will be at the offices of Labrador Technologies (my
office, and thanks again to Labrador for stepping up to give us the
venue):

Flamingo Block Building
Suite 350, 229 11 Avenue SE <------ SE !!

Buzz '05' after entering the directory listing on the front door
panel, (locked 24 hrs), and we'll let you in. Don't worry about
forgetting that number, we'll post a sign at the door.

This is directly south of the Central Library/City Hall, so it's
pretty easy to find, and you can take the C-Train to City Hall/Olympic
Plaza, and then head south past City Hall to get there.

Note from the !!!! in the subject, that we have a change in our
regular schedule of meetings, thursday instead of tuesday. If this is
bad for you, and you really wanted to come to this meeting, please let
me know, and we will try to adjust.

The presentation this month will be ^^^mod_rails^^^, given by yours
truly, Lori Olson.

The meeting is scheduled for the third **** THURSDAY ****, Jan 22, at
5:30 pm, and will be at the offices of Labrador Technologies (my
office, and thanks again to Labrador for stepping up to give us the
venue):

Flamingo Block Building
Suite 350, 229 11 Avenue SE <------ SE !!

Buzz '05' after entering the directory on the front door panel,
(locked 24 hrs), and we'll let you in. Don't worry about forgetting
that number, we'll post a (better) sign at the door.

This is directly south of the Central Library/City Hall, so it's
pretty easy to find, and you can take the C-Train to City Hall/Olympic
Plaza, and then head south past City Hall to get there.

Thanks to all who attended and organized the Crusers meeting yesterday. I hope
it was
useful to everybody.

I posted the de-anonymizer code snippet to my blog at
http://bitly.com/deanonymizer, and
the slide PDF is available for a while at http://bitly.com/xVNw

Cheers,

Tim

Sorry for the late notice, but we lost our venue, and I've been
scramblin around arranging a temporary, backup meeting site.

Our presentation topic this month will be Javascript, by Tim
Breitkreutz.

We may, or may not, have a Javascript book to give away as a door
prize. O'Reilly's hasn't come thru on my latest request yet, so I'll
have to see what Chapters has on hand.

The meeting is scheduled for the usual third Tuesday (Dec 16) at 5:30
pm, and will be at the offices of Labrador Technologies (my office,
and thanks to Labrador for stepping up to give us the venue):

Flamingo Block Building
Suite 350, 229 11 Avenue SE <------ SE !!

Buzz '05' at the door (locked 24 hrs), and we'll let you in. Don't

pretty easy to find, and you can take the C-Train to City Hall/Olympic
Plaza, and then head south past City Hall to get there.

Our January meeting will probably be at the same place, and the topic
will be Mod_Rails a.k.a. Phusion Passenger, and I'll (Lori Olson)
probably be presenting (if I can't arm twist anyone else).

If anyone on the list would like to present, or lead a discussion, in
the following months (feb, march, etc), please let me know what you'd
like to talk about, and when you'd like to do it.

Regards, Lori

P.S. To those who showed up last month at ThoughtWorks, we apologise
for the misfire. The automated meeting notices have been disabled, so
you will only get a meeting notice if/when someone is actually
on-the=ball enough to organize it.
