What google calls a widget, microsoft calls a gadget.  Gadgets/widgets are said to be the next step of bringing the web closer to the end user with small pieces of functionality avail on your desktop or on your site.  I would actually like to start with web widgets that just run on asp.net and not live.com and am currently searching for hard to find resources on that matter.  For now, below is a listing of resources for creating Microsoft live.com gadgets.
