Title:   November 2009 CTDUG Meeting

Date:   Wednesday November 11, 2009
Time:   7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Location:   Freescale's Parmer campus, Building A *** NOTE NEW LOCATION ***
Notes:   Information Mapping and DITA

Mike Austin will speak on his experience with Information Mapping and his experiences in driving use of IM as the structured content methodology at Freescale as they move into DITA-based, single-sourcing and content reuse.

Presenter

Mike Austin has worked as an information developer in the computer hardware, software, and semiconductor industries for 22 years. He first encountered Information Mapping at a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute technical writing seminar in the early 1990s and began applying the principles as much as possible within the traditional technical writing environments he encountered through the rest of that decade. It was not until 2003, working with Mark Nixon at StarCore, that he was allowed and actually encouraged to apply the Information Mapping method in a rigorous way. Now, at Freescale Semiconductor and again working with Mark Nixon, he is an information architect driving structured content development with the Information Mapping method as Freescale makes the transition from traditional unstructured content to a DITA-based production system.

Anne;

Thanks for planning the get-together last evening... a good time was had by all (well, except when it started raining and we had to scramble inside).

Everyone;

We've got a very interesting session planned for November, and we're scheduling it a bit earlier in the month than "normal" ... make sure to update your calendar:

Bob and ALL...
I think this is a very good article; however, a bit slanted by the author's
bias.
The devil is in the details when it comes to researching a cms. All promote
support for all file formats including the "mgt" of DITA/XML. A cms that has
recognition and true component management is usually associated with a hefty
price tag or only valuable for one department within a large corporation (e.g.
Tech pubs w/ DITA vs Training w/o DITA).
I don't mean to market my own products, but Quark has built adapters to enable
the cms to successfully manage DITA topics at the component level, support
reuse, manage maps, and publish. We did this for our clients to get the most
out of their CURRENT cms and not be forced to acquire the latest technology of a
ccm. Depending on your requirements, we can make Sharepoint very component
savvy and cost effective.
I like this posting and I'm interested to see what others contribute.
Thanks,
Jason

Emmelyn;

According to the interesting article Why CCM is Not a CMS: Or Why You Shouldn't Confuse a Whale with a Fish , you're not going to find anyone who has been successful in using an ECM for DITA.

I regret that I won't be able to be there. However, I'd love to regroup with any of you who can suggest an ECM that has successfully integrated with your organization's DITA/XML implementation.

Getting data from non-DITA sources is kind of what we do. ;-) I've
already attended a meeting for this group. It just seems activity has
dropped off and I'm hearing people jumping to the "DITA for the Web"
subcommittee (or at least that is my perception).

Makes sense. We might be interested in this one, but it does apparently
focus on using DITA directly (or closer to the source) rather than
making use of a server-side transformation process.

I'm committed to the Mashup committee right now, though it sounds like I
need to at least be a spectator for "DITA for the Web".

I thought that this might be of interest as it's DITA focused and there's been a lot of interest online, on many of the DITA mailing lists, and elsewhere about integrating DITA and Wiki.

"IBM DITA Wiki--One year retrospective"

Topic

The IBM DITA Wiki is an internal application created originally to demonstrate the feasibility of using native DITA in a collaborative authoring tool. It is positioned today as a key means for capturing the writings of Subject Matter Experts within the company in the reusable, easily repurposed DITA format.

The wiki is now a hosted service within IBM that enables contributors whose jobs are NOT technical writing to move their content development into the DITA standard. The collaboration aspect in particular has appealed to programming and education teams, and we are exploring the wiki's suitability for other domains as well, such as engineering and support professionals.

This presentation will provide some background on DITA and this project's history before delving into some of the experiences and successes of various user communities to date.

About the Speaker

Don Day is an advisory software engineer for IBM. For the past 15 years, he has designed and supported publishing tools for IBM's Information Development community. Don provides XML expertise for Information Design and Development in IBM's e-business Operating Systems Solutions area and for IBM Corporate User Technology. He has represented IBM on the W3C XSL Working Group and is presently IBM's alternate rep for the W3C CSS Working Group. Don holds a dual-major Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Journalism and a Master of Arts degree in Technical and Professional Communication (with a minor in Computer Science) from New Mexico State University.

Hi Ben -

Glad we had such a great turnout! That was a fun "meeting."

What I heard, apart from the waitress interruptions, was "Mashup" involved getting data from non-DITA sources. Seth Park has a good post with use cases for DITA mashups here: http://dita.xml.org/resource/ctdug-june-usecases-for-mashup.

The DITA for the Web subcommittee has a draft charter here: http://xml.coverpages.org/DITA-Web-SC-Proposal.html. Highlights include recommendations and best practices guidelines for use of DITA content on the Web as a deliverable. XHTML, web pages, and web content management are prevalent in that charter.

Think you'd want to join one of the committees? I just went through the OASIS membership process myself to get on the DITA for Web subcommittee, so I'm looking forward to ramping up.

I hope that helps!
Anne

Don, would you mind writing up what unique role you think each committee plays?  Seth, I'm sure you've got something to say on the matter as well.  I'd like one or both committees to move forward.

    Waitress: Do you need anything?

Don, would you mind writing up what unique role you think each committee
plays? Seth, I'm sure you've got something to say on the matter as
well. I'd like one or both committees to move forward.

Title:   June 2009 CTDUG Meeting

Date:   Wednesday June 24, 2009
Time:   6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Location:   Freescale Semiconductor, Parmer campus, building C, Long Canyon A conference room
Notes:   In this presentation, Seth Park will show examples of use-cases in real-world scenarios being defined by the Semiconductor Information Design Subcommittee (SIDSC) as they discover the relationship between the SIDSC specialization and pre-existing industry standard XML formats. Many people have expressed an interest in using DITA as part of a distributed information architecture. This interest comes from two primary usecases:

* Get: DITA content needs data from non-DITA data sources ("DITA as primary architecture")

* Give: non-DITA data sources need DITA content ("DITA as documentation sub-module")

The proposed DITA Mashup subcommittee will focus on defining DITA's relationship with non-DITA data sources in order to provide a solution for these usecases. If you are interested in participating in the subcommittee, please email seth.park@....

Presenter

Seth Park is an information architect at Freescale Semiconductor and one of the chartering members of the Semiconductor Information Design Subcommittee of the OASIS DITA Technical Committee. He began his career at then-Motorola SPS, where he began to discover the challenges of dealing with information stored in unstructured, proprietary formats in disparate content management systems. In 2006, Freescale Semiconductor decided to address the eminent threat of unsustainable information lifecycle management head-on. As the lead of Freescale's Information Architecture team, Seth is developing a DITA-based architecture and tools requirements to meet the long?term product data requirements of the semiconductor industry. Seth is a member of the DITA Technical Committee and the SPIRIT Register Description Work Group.
