It is looking good.  Fred was sick for a couple of days; but we finally got something together.  We have a shopping list mostly household products and I will do the shopping.

Here is a list of the experiments:

  • oozing Pumpkin
  • Conductivity
  • The Bohr Experiment
  • Polymers: Make a super ball   (2 stations)
  • Check out pH: Cabbage experiment (2 stations)
There are 3 experiments on stage and 2 (total of 4) experiments on the floor.  How many popular experiments can you put on the floor?

We need to send out fliers this week.

Please confirm if you're volunteering.  The science night starts at 6pm and volunteers are encouraged to arrive at the auditorium by 5pm.  If you are helping out at a station, you may arrive later but before 6pm.

Questions?

Thanks,
Mo

Fantastic!!!  I created a folder, FOSS_related_kits on the yahoo group.  Please put the FOSS and grade specific new kits there.  Thanks to Scott we had "Trees" for the kindergarten.

If you volunteered to make new kits that are geared for FOSS earth science, please upload your kit to this folder.  I am hoping that we can have the kits available for library loaning in November.

Thanks so much,
Mo

Hi All,
Thanks for all the interest in new kits for Shoebox Science! I just posted my exel spread sheet listing the current shoebox science kits. Actually, I still have to update a little and add new-this-year- kits. I wanted to get it up so that everyone can see what kits we already have so we don't duplicate effort when creating new kits (for example, we already have a "Spoon Bell" kit). I am also in the process of posting the instructions that go with each kit so you can have more details but that seems to be taking a while so I'll be doing a few at a time. Keep the creative juices flowing!

These look good. Now, I have edits for several of these... typically mild changes but in one case (magnetism-2) I've hacked it up quite a bit. If you want to send me the editable files, I can do it. In most cases it would be faster than scanning and sending the edits to you. I have the others here in Word format, why don't you send it like that and I'll make sure I can open them.

Ultimately, I'd like to put the editable files on the Yahoo site for anyone who needs to make changes.

I thought I'd try them on Wednesday with my boys.

I am sending you back the documents I entered and the graphics redone in black and white (I have colored jpegs saved as well).

These were formatted and entered in the Apple Works program which works just like Microsoft Word... especially at this level. The docs should look the same. If this is a problem I will buy MS Word and convert them for you. I was able to open them in both places without a problem but not all computers are created equal.

We should update all of them. My son just brought home a science box that I didn't recognize.

Attached are the PDFs (I didn't want to post them and cause confusion).

Greetings fellow Science Committee folks,

I know I am supposed to be getting an earth sciences shoe box kit
together, however, I was sidetracked online (as usual) and came across
these neat little experiments. I am not a scientist so could you folks
take a look at them and give input? They were almost directly lifted
from a web site (cited, including illustrations) .

I do have two, simple sand and water erosion experiments I am trying
to put together.

Any input would be much appreciated on the Atmosphere (for better
term) kits.

Also, Could we put the grade (or age level) on each shoe box kit
instructions sheet? It is not always obvious.

Thanks!

Aren't we sending the forms to the kids to take home?    I'm afraid email communication may not get us much response especially it's getting very close to the Science Night.

Curie Community Members,

Please see below for this week’s updates.

Thanks,

Chris Juarez

Principal

Red Ribbon Week:

Thank you for your participation in Red Ribbon Week.  It was great to see so many students wearing red on Tuesday, and all the mismatched socks Wednesday!  I hope they enjoyed today (Thursday), seeing and hearing the fun things I do without drugs, as well as drawing/writing/talking in their classrooms about what students and teachers can do without drugs.

“Challenged Athletes Foundation” Triathlon Sunday:

Somehow my triathlon ended up perfectly timed to follow Red Ribbon Week and my demo on the blacktop for students on Thursday!  Technically called the “San Diego Triathlon Challenge”, this Sunday’s event at La Jolla Cove will be a fun and inspiring day for any families that can make it out there.  I don’t yet know my exact start time, only that it will be sometime between 8:00-8:30.  Even if your child doesn’t catch a glimpse of his/her principal, I assure you the day will not disappoint!  If coming out to watch, I suggest arriving early so that you can see swimmers entering/exiting the water and bikers taking off.  Throughout the morning, there will also be introductions of the 125 world-class challenged athletes and 20 “Operation Rebound” (wounded troops) participating, a Wild West Spin-a-Thon that’s fun to watch, and a Jumbo Screen TV to show all the action!  See http://sdtc09.kintera.org/Chris, and click “Event Info”.  For parking information near the Cove, click on the link above and then “Important Event Participant Information:”, and scroll down to page 11.

H1N1 Flu Update:

The County Health Office is continuing to encourage parents to keep kids home when they’re sick, get them vaccinated, and keep them in school when they’re healthy.  Our custodial staff is continuing the heightened level of surface cleaning, including tabletops and doorknobs (which traditionally aren’t included in the cleaning schedule on a regular basis).  Schools were provided a small amount of hand sanitizer, but any extra that you may be able to send in to your child’s classroom would be a welcome bonus.

Don't forget to buy your Craft Fair Opportunity Drawing tickets next week and save money before the day of the Fair. Look for the ticket table near the food court on campus or Mary Ricci  at the traffic circle ....we will have tons of tickets for you to buy!  We are receiving new and exciting prizes every day so look for an updated list on the Craft Fair bulletin board.

The 5th Grade is having a book sale at the Craft Fair to raise funds for the 5th grade promotion ceremony and activities.  Please bring in your gently used books for any age for our sale.  You may leave them in the book bin at the 5th grade classrooms or put them directly on the auditorium stage.   We will also be selling DVDs, videos and CDs.   So please check your shelves and drawers and donate to help the 5th grade.  Thank you!

Note from Toni Green (K-3 art teacher)

Dear Curie families in grades K-3,

Thank you so much for your generous donations and support of the art program at Curie. With these donations, I am able to buy many fun and needed supplies and materials to use with the students. Using a wide variety of materials, allows the students different tools to express themselves creatively. Art education is a means of expression and provides the basis for positive personal growth and development.

.....Amazing News this Year..... Your student's artwork will be on display at a special art show in room B-3 during the Curie Craft Fair on November 7th.  I'm looking forward to seeing you at the art show.

Hello Science night volunteers,

So far, I have 46 families planning to attend tomorrow's science night, which translates to about 150 people.  Please be there by 5:00 if possible to start setting up tables in the auditorium and laying out science experiments.  We can't start earlier because we will interfere with SAY.

Is anyone able to take a few photos?  I can bring a camera if needed.

See you tomorrow.

We had a great turn out and the night went smoothly with existing popular experiments and some new fun ones from Fred.  I saw kids taking home atoms and bouncy balls and smiling.  Well done Kim & Fred.

Big thanks also go to Fred's  29 student volunteers from Southwest College and Mesa College.

Our next focus is the new shoe-box science kits that are geared for earth science (FOSS) by grade.  As the library is closed "temporarily" how about we make one kit for each class and distribute to the teacher.  Each volunteer who made the kits can replenish them say once a week?  Once they're finished we can collect them and put back to the library for future circulation.

Let's discuss this at our next meeting: Tuesday Nov. 3, 2009 at B-10.

Thanks,
Mo

Hello all,

Mrs. Vasquez (K-4) and I came up with a shoebox plan for the Kindergarteners that she is going to run by all the K teachers.  There currently exist three well organized KinderColt activities developed by Chelsea a few years ago, 5 copies of each activity.  I will add 5 copies of the Grow a Tree activity developed by Scott Sipas to the collection.

Each teacher will get an activity for about a month, and will hand them out to students as they see fit.  Handouts will happen on Wednesday, which is their library day and be returned by the following Tuesday.  I will get either room parents or classroom volunteers in each class to check on the returned kits and replenish as necessary once a week.  After a month, I will rotate the kits between classrooms.

Not all of the kits are related to Trees, but my thought is that for now let's just try to get the program started and worry about refining it more to match the science topic each year.  Keeping the numbers of kits low for now will help us figure out how many we can really support.

If you all agree, then we'll get going in December.

Chelsea - can I have the graphic and template for the KinderColt kits?  Also, the original files will help me make spares for when kids forget to return it on time.  If you'd like, you can upload all this to the website for future use.

Parents of Kindergarteners (Scott, Roger, Mary, Jenn??)  - can I get a volunteer from each K class to check on those kits, ideally on Tuesday afternoons or Wednesday mornings?  I will handle K-4.

Hi There,

Sorry I couldn't make it last night - I had an unexpected hockey-related
commitment. I didn't know we had a librarian yet. I could stop in tomorrow
morning to say hello. George - are you available? We could meet her/him
together. I think we need to ask the librarian about the storage of additional
kits. Since the number of kits is limiting access I would prefer we not cap the
number - at least until it becomes difficult to do the replenishing. I would
recommend starting with 2-4 of each kit but I think we need to involve the new
librarian in some of these decisions since we will need their help in finding a
place for them in the library. I am happy to talk to the new librarian about the
kits in general and the prospect of adding more tomorrow morning if that sounds
O.K. with everyone.

members doing the replenishing) rather than asking room parents will work
better.

Sorry, I was sick yesterday. As for how to distribute the kits, I would propose
that we add
them to the ones we already have to start and then slowly phase out some of the
older kits.

As for the coordination with the new librarian, I would propose that we all meet
once to
go over the plans.

to make. The plan is we can assemble the kits late next week. In the meantime
Michael and Chelsea will edit our write-up on yahoo group and then we will send
to Curie for lamination next Tuesday.

Please let me know what you like to do.

Thanks,

Hi There,

Sorry I couldn't make it last night - I had an unexpected hockey-related commitment. I didn't know we had a librarian yet. I could stop in tomorrow morning to say hello. George - are you available? We could meet her/him together. I think we need to ask the librarian about the storage of additional kits. Since the number of kits is limiting access I would prefer we not cap the number - at least until it becomes difficult to do the replenishing. I would recommend starting with 2-4 of each kit but I think we need to involve the new librarian in some of these decisions since we will need their help in finding a place for them in the library. I am happy to talk to the new librarian about the kits in general and the prospect of adding more tomorrow morning if that sounds O.K. with everyone.

Sorry, I was sick yesterday. As for how to distribute the kits, I would propose that we add
them to the ones we already have to start and then slowly phase out some of the older kits.

As for the coordination with the new librarian, I would propose that we all meet once to
go over the plans.

Hi Mo,

Are you planning on sticking to the original plan of 4 kits per class for all
classes K - 5 (there are 23 not counting the two SIA classes) which would mean
92 kits for one FOSS trimester? Then adding, over time, at least one kit per
grade for each of the 2 remaining FOSS trimester for a total of 276 new kits?
All in boxes? I am pretty sure it is going to be hard to find that kind of
space in the library. Do we have an alternate storage site?

I think we need to decide what we want the purpose of these kits to be. The
original idea for the FOSS-related kits was that each student would have a
chance to take home, from their classroom and tracked by the teacher or room
rep, the kit that is appropriate for their grade-specific curriculum while that
curriculum was being taught in the classroom thereby reinforcing what they were
learning in the classroom. If these kits now go into the shoebox science program
at library then any student can take home any kit at any time and the kits will
not necessarily be connected to what students are learning in the classroom and
the grade appropriate curriculum. This is fine by me but not the original
purpose of the FOSS-connected kits as I understood it. Is this what the
committee wants? If this is the case then I would recommend that 2 -4 of each
kit - not 4 per classroom - be put together. Then these can be like any other
shoebox science kit and support the California curriculum in general. I don't
think it hurts at all for a second grader to take home a kit related to a
concept they will see in third grade or for a fourth grader to take home a kit
based on a concept they learned in third grade. It will all reinforce. The
oversight required to make sure each student gets their grade appropriate kit
during the time the curriculum is being taught would be very difficult to run
out of the library and easier to perform on a classroom basis. If the real
purpose is to coordinate with the current classroom curriculum by grade then I
don't think placing the kits in the shoebox science - library based program is
the answer. We should stick to the original classroom-based distribution plan.

Since I missed the meeting last night I don't know what was discussed - sorry!

Let me know your thoughts -
Karen

Hi-
I just wanted to let everyone know about this opportunity for funding.  March is just around the corner....

The 2010 Teachers’ Fund Program will be available in early March 2010.  Please visit our website at that time www.sfoundation.org for further details.

The San Diego Teachers' Fund K-6 Program provides mini-grants to San Diego County’s elementary public school teachers for the development and implementation of innovative classroom projects. In 2001, the Arts in the Classroom Program was created to provide grants to high school arts teachers when funds are insufficient or unavailable. As part of the grant, teachers are encouraged to share their projects with their colleagues.

The deadline for submitting applications for our 2009 San Diego Teachers’ Fund Program was May 18, 2009.

We forgot to discuss items to purchase for the astronomy night.  We'll need to make a decision before the next meeting.

1) Glow necklaces or glow bracelets

We have ordered from this site before:

We could order 300 glow bracelets for less than $30.

Glow necklaces cost more, but maybe we could charge more too.  I have 100 to donate.  If we wanted to order more, this site has some (I have ordered from them before) http://www.glowgranny.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2

2) Also, Mary Ricci found some stargazing kits here:

$34.95 for 25 kits for astronomy night.  We talked about setting up a station for the kids to try something like this out in between standing in telescope lines.

Please give your opinion on each item.

The San Diego Science Festival (Mar 20-27, 2010) has the Nifty 150 and the Scientist in Residence programs that Curie teachers can apply for.

The Nifty 150 will visit schools in February, March and April of 2010 and share their inspiring stories and science professions with classrooms of future scientists and science professionals.

For a period of ~ 6 weeks, San Diego county schools will work in partnership with a local science professional and an SDSF undergraduate liaison on a joint project that will result in a *product* to be showcased in the 2010 Festival.

Chris: what do you think?

Thanks,
