Kurt, I have a macro/wide angle lens (0.6X) that I forgot to include when I sold my camera. It has a 52mm thread and an adapter to 46mm, which was the filter ring size for my Nikon lens.

Mike, I live in Calverton at Rte 495 exit 71.  I'm a saturdays-only observer, usually.  Start time is random with deference to weather and maintenance projects.  You could try http://www.maps.com and use 1115 Main Bayview Road, Southold NY 11971 as the address.

I see the group is growing, good job.

I will post some images I took from custer when I get home. Right now
I am at work with no access to them.

Saturday night went well. I was there till 2:25 AM, and there was one
observer there. Don't know who he was.

After Thursday, 6/24, I'll be off for the summer. Anyone planning to
go to Custer can either post to the group or email me at
stevenorlando@... or call me at 631-266-5788.

Most clear nights I can be persuaded to come down.

See you Sat.

If you have not already called your senator, please call his Albany office on Monday.  The numbers, as you probably know, are available on the NYS Senate Website.  Even if your senator is not a member of the majority Republican party, it's probably worthwhile to make every senator aware of the support that exists for the Healthy, Safe, and Energy Efficient Outdoor Lighting Act, S3003.

It will probably be tough to get through to your senator him/herself; your best shot would be between late morning (when he/she will presumably arrive back in Albany) and 3 p.m. when session starts.  If s/he is not available, ask for the legislative aide who is following S3003 and (if the senator is a Republican), say that you want to know why S3003 has not been released from the Rules Committee. (If you get anything substantive back in response to this question, please drop me a note.)  If there are objections, why can they not be publicly aired in debate on the Senate floor?  You want to make clear that this legislation is very important to you and that you will be extremely disappointed if it does not come to the floor for a vote.

Please also call the Majority Leader, Joseph Bruno, 518/455-3191.  You are not likely to get through to him, so just tell whoever answers the phone that you want Senator Bruno to release S3003 to the floor for a vote.

If you're up for one more call, make it to Dean Skelos, 518/455-3171.  He's the Deputy Majority Leader, and although he doesn't have quite Bruno's clout, he may be more sympathetic to this issue.

If for some reason you're not able to make these calls Monday, it's still worth doing on Tuesday.  However, that being the last scheduled day of this year's session, it will be that much more difficult for your call to have the desired effect.

A number of groups have raised objections to this bill, among them being the utilities who profit from wasted electricity and a couple of business groups who think the trespass provision might interfere with lighting they use for advertising and other promotional purposes.  BUT if every voter in the State made calls like this tomorrow, all those objections would melt away.  We may not generate quite that many calls, but every one that's made will help put a guilt trip on any senator that doesn't support S3003.

PLEASE make these calls tomorrow, and get as many other folks to do likewise as you can.

LOL at "that would be 1960s" around the new moon we usually end up
with 1 or 2 big Dobsonians maybe two schmidt-cassegrains ( one is a
14" celestron, but a gemini mount) and a handful of refractors. Last
two weekends have had good conditions, and the number of scopes have
increased. as far as the refractor types, a number of tele vue NP-101
(correct spelling probibly helps recognise it..fov..Field Of View)

Subject: Urgent Action Required! - NYS Light Pollution Legislation
tmadigan@...
Send Email Send Email

I hope everyone remembered to call your NYS Senators.  My senator is Caesar Trunzo, 3rd district.  Check yours; if you're in the 3rd district, he is your senator too.  Trunzo is a co-sponsor of the bill and would love to hear from all his constituents.  We have until Tuesday to make this thing work and we're running out of time. The NYS Senate will adjourn for the Summer and our Bill, S3003, is still stuck in the Rules Committee.  It needs to get out onto the NYS Senate floor for a full vote.

Your help now is *****really***** important!

On June 3rd, the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee "reported out" the light pollution bill, S3003/A6950.  The legislation has now gone on to the Rules Committee, which as you probably know is in charge of "traffic control"--deciding which bills will go the the floor for a vote in the hectic closing days of the session.

The principal sponsor of the Senate bill, Carl Marcellino, will need to communicate very forcefully to the Senate leadership his desire to see the bill come to the floor.  If you have not already done so, please write Senator Marcellino and urge him to press for release of the bill from Rules.

S3003 also has 12 co-sponsors, listed below.  One of the responsibilities of being a co-sponsor is to assist in moving the bill.  If your senator is on this list, PLEASE contact him/her immediately with the same message--i.e., urge the Senate leadership to bring the bill to the floor for a vote.

It is a very good idea in these letters to *ask for a response*--for example, "please let me know how soon S3003 will come to the Senate floor for a vote"...this helps put a little more pressure on the sponsor to follow through.  And please let me know of any replies you receive!

If your senator is not among the co-sponsors, please pick one (or more!) that is in your general area and write to him/her.  The location of the district office will give you a clue.

                DeFrancisco, Syracuse
                Fuschillo, Freeport
                Hoffman, Syracuse
                Johnson, Babylon
                LaValle, Selden
                Marchi, Staten Island
                Maziarz, Lockport
Mendez, parts of the Bronx and Manhattan (no district office listed)
                Padavan, Bellerose
                Rath, Williamsville
                Trunzo, Hauppauge

(The 12th co-sponsor, Senator Velella, went to jail last week and is presumably not receiving mail there!)

If you're not sure who your senator is, visit

http://map01.elections.state.ny.us/boe/main.asp

Please send a copy of your letter to Joseph Bruno, the Senate Majority Leader who also chairs the Rules Committee (909 Legislative Office Bldg., Albany 12247).

Please do this **ASAP**!  The Legislature is scheduled to adjourn in less than three weeks, and the closer it gets to the end of session, the tougher will be the competition to get action on the Senate floor.

Your help now is *****really***** important!  Please spread the word to everyone you know and ask them to help too.  Might you be able to enlist help in this regard from any organizations in which you're active?  We think there is a better-than-even chance the Governor will sign the bill if it reaches his desk, but first we've got to get it out of Senate Rules!

Please contact your state representatives and let them know you want them to support this bill.  The time for action is NOW!  I've attached a generic letter, suitable for immediate signing and mailing, along with the recently released IDA / SELENE-NY press release.  Aside from contacting your individual state senator, also send a copy to Senator Marcellino, the principal sponsor of the bill, to reaffirm your support of his initiative.  In addition, we have to consider the considerable opposition from the NYS Transportation Dept.  They'll be opposing this legislation as it's successful enactment will compel them to change many of their practices as far as bidding and how they choose contractors, etc, to say nothing of the very powerful industrial lobby, personified by GE, the manufacturer of a lion's share of the lighting fixtures used.  On top of all that, there's Gov. Pataki's veto pen which he's already used on a similar piece of legislation a couple of years back.  We have to have overwhelming support in the NYS Senate for this legislation to see the light of day and officially become the will of the people, and not be killed by powerful lobbyists and Gov. Pataki's considerable special interest agenda.

Yes, Kurt, John is the one who made the 32". Was this the typical
"Saturday Observing" session? It sure looks like it was a planned
event. LOL - Please forgive me Kurt, and I'm the first one who would use
acronyms and abbreviations, to say nothing of the fact that I've been
observing since the late '60s ( that would be 1960s), but could you
translate this "4 or 5 Refractors, 101 televiews incredible fov. 6" or
7" in mead ED apo"? Thanks.

Tom

I'm at Custer now. It's 2:50 PM and sunny with sharp shadows.
I'm working on the multimedia computer.
I got lost trying to access the group to read the old messages.
I opened a yahoo account and found 5 astronomy chat rooms ;-)
Can you tell me how to get to the group page? Don't everybody answer at once!

Thank you and thanks for adding me to the group. I know there's been
talk about setting up a group for Custer on Yahoo and I was even
broached on the subject. I declined, citing an already overabundance of
things to occupy each of my 24 hour days. I would be interested in
knowing who it is that has undertaken this laudable enterprise and who
it is I'm now replying back to. What's more, in addition to
highlighting it in the CC, is there any provision in the group's yahoo
allocation to upload / post the CC as it becomes available?

Regards,
Tom

PS. As far as mentioning it in the CC, I've already got that covered
and there shouldn't be any issues with Bob, vis-à-vis mentioning it in
the CC.

Hello,

I've added you to my custerobservers group at Yahoo! Groups, a free,
easy-to-use service. Yahoo! Groups makes it easy to send and receive
group messages, coordinate events, share photos and files, and more.

My introductory message to you:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought a message board would be easyer then playing phone or email
tag when setting up observations other then Sat nites. I tried to add
sat nites to the calendar, but yahoo seems to still be debugging their
new system. Please feel free to forward the link to any one you think
might be interested. Tom, unless you think it will cause problems with
Bob it might be an idear to Mention the message board in the Comment.

Description of the group:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
a Way for the Staff and general public to comunicate and plan
observations at Long Islands only puplic obsevatory.

For those not familiar w/ the Yahoo groups - If you do not wish to
get the E-mails of every post - go to the "Edit MY Membership" and
Click on No e-Mail - then You can just read the messages here on the
Group

home by 6 - will decide then
