Subject: network (analysis) research?
buborekos
Send Email Send Email

I've sent Viki the URLs for some of Barry Wellman's Social Network Analysis
papers that can be found online (see
http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~wellman/main.html ).

Does anyone else know of good papers/articles online that apply social network
analysis to the internet and online communities?

Email Viki (buborekos@...) and cc me (robin@...). If enough links
come in, I'll put them all on a page at www.cybersoc.com and will give credit to
those who sent in the links.

Thanks!
Robin.

Dear cybersociology members,

I would like to ask You, weather somebody of You could help me. I would like to
write a research plan (this is a homework actually) about young people (below
the age 18), about they habits of how they use the Net, with whom they are in
contact only virtually, or both virtually and in real life, about weak and
strong ties etc...... So how can I do a network analisys about this topic?

I would be very thankful, if somebody could send me some ideas, ar advises how
can I do this, or maybe some of You have already made a research like that. I
was looking for similar researches , but here in Hungary I couldn't find
anything, neither on Internet.

Thanks is advance.

Viki

Hi everybody,

I don´t know if they are good, but in my Ph.D. Thesis I wrote two
chapters about Social Network analysis and aplied them to some
practical examples.
That´s the good news - the bad one is that the whole Thesis is in
german and I hadn´t enaough time yet to translate them into english
and put them on my website. However, if there are more "people in
cyberspace" who are interested in said subject I promise to speed up
the process!

Viiki, how urgent do you need those papers? I could sent you
a "special edition" - nothing ready for publication, but containing
some data which might be usefull for you and your research.

Best, Bodo Polzer

TeknoKultura: Call for Contributions

Teknokultura, on-line journal (http://teknokultura.rrp.upr.edu/) of the
University of Puerto Rico's Social Sciences Faculty (Río Piedras
Campus),
announces its opening for contributions to evaluate articles and
electronic
art relevant to the integration of technology to daily lives and labor.
Book and website reviews, literary work, and cartoons asociated to these
themes will also be evaluated.

Teknokultura provides a forum of expression on subjects related to
technology and culture from a critical and transdisciplinary
perspective.
Through its vast array of sections, the journal engages in subjects
related
to lifestyles and cultural spaces that have emerged from the integration
of
technology to our social lives in contemporary society.

This call for contributions will be open from April 2002 until April
2003.
During this time, we will receive contributions that will be published
in
the second volume of the journal which will be available on-line on
August
2002.

Contributions in the form of articles should follow these guidelines:
approximately 15 pages in length with double spaced paragraphs,
submitted in
a PC platform (preferably in Microsoft Word), and use APA publication
style.
We encourage the integration of audiovisual material as part of the
articles.

The submitted articles should have not been published elsewhere in an
electronic format and the author/s are responsible for obtaining the
appropriate permits to use images, videos or music included in their
contribution and that are protected by copyrights. Authors will retain
the

International Conference on
CULTURAL ATTITUDES TOWARDS TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATION (CATaC'02)
12-15 July 2002, University of Montréal, Quebec, Canada

Conference theme:
The Net(s) of Power: Language, Culture and Technology

Website: www.it.murdoch.edu.au/~sudweeks/catac02/

-------------------------------------------------------

This biennial conference series aims to provide an international forum
for the presentation and discussion of cutting-edge research on how
diverse cultural attitudes shape the implementation and use of
information and communication technologies (ICT). "Cultural attitudes"
here includes cultural values and communicative preferences that may be
embedded in both the content and form of ICT - thus threatening to make
ICT less the agent of a promised democratic global village and more an
agent of cultural homogenisation and imperialism. The conference series
brings together scholars from around the globe who provide diverse
perspectives, both in terms of the specific culture(s) they highlight in
their presentations and discussions, and in terms of the discipline(s)
through which they approach the conference theme.

PROGRAM
An exciting program has been arranged, including presenters from
Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Iran, Israel, Mexico, Philippines,
Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, UK and USA.
See the conference website for paper details. Ample time is allowed for
open discussions at the end of each session. The conference concludes
with a panel discussion. The panel is led by session discussants and
integrates the themes of the conference, focusing on future research
directions in the converging areas of culture, technology and
communication.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Susan Herring (Associate Professor of Information Science, Adjunct
Associate Professor of Linguistics, Indiana University) will be speaking
on "The language of the Internet: English dominance or heteroglossia".

INVITED SPEAKER
Laurie Walker, University of Lethbridge, Canada

ACCOMMODATION
Blocks of rooms have been reserved at the university residences and at
the Royal Terrasse Hotel. Be sure to make your reservation early,

Château Montebello, a stunning red cedar log château famed for its
rugged luxury in beautiful surroundings. Dinner and bus transport to
Montebello are included in the registration fee. Montebello is
approximately a one-and-a-half hour drive from Montreal.

REGISTRATION
Until 17 May, the conference registration fee is USD300 with further

dinner and transport, reception, proceedings, satchels, breakfasts,

EXTREME COMPUTING
The NTK/Mute Festival Of Inappropriate Technology

11am-7pm, Sunday June 9th 2002
The Camden Centre, London (opposite Kings Cross station)
£3 entrance on the door
http://www.xcom2002.com/

THE FESTIVAL SEASON is here, but what does it offer to all those whose
idea
of a good time is sitting indoors hunched over a PC with the curtains
drawn
or plotting the overthrow of the gallery-system from a pub in
Shoreditch?
Well, now there's EXTREME COMPUTING 2002, an electronic village fete for
the 21st century, an off-the-radar alt.jumble-sale, an all-day
celebration
of do-it-yourself technological and cultural unusualness.

Contrary to the conventional wisdom that hackers and activists don't mix
and techies and artists come from different planets, award-winning news
site NTK and long-running digital arts magazine MUTE have put aside
their
differences to bring pioneers of the UK's outside-the-mainstream
techno-cultural world together under one roof.

The roof in question is that of THE CAMDEN CENTRE, positioned almost
unhealthily close to Kings Cross railway station. Come SUNDAY JUNE 9TH,
it
will be packed to its maximum 900-person capacity with stalls selling
everything from home-made robots to Japanese junk food, fanzines to
tea-towel manifestos, and aerials to astro-bonsai. Free software
enthusiasts and misfortune-tellers will vie for your attention to create
a
general air of well-intentioned chaos.

Areas which the event will cover (but not be restricted to) include:
community wireless networking - free software - screenings - independent
media centres - PC recycling - no borders activism - retro video gaming
-
renewable energy - mp3 remixing - critical art - robots - weird science
-
weblogging - new distribution models

(not all of which are necessarily "inappropriate" technologies, we
should
emphasise - unless you happen to be Bill Gates or a regional sales
manager
for Dixons).

Further updates are available on the website:

Soft Power: Informational Ambiguities and Asymmetries in the Network Age

Special Topic Issue of the Journal of the American Society for
               Information Science and Technology (JASIST)

                           Guest editors:
Christopher Lueg, University of Technology Sydney, Australia
                 Blaise Cronin, Indiana University, USA.

                    Deadline: October 31, 2002

The next Special Topic Issue of the Journal of the American Society for
Information Science and Technology (JASIST) is scheduled to come out in
2004 on the topic of "Soft Power: Informational Ambiguities and
Asymmetries in the Network Age". The guest editors for this special issue
will be Christopher Lueg of University of Technology Sydney, Australia,
and Blaise Cronin of Indiana University, USA.

Virtually unlimited access to computers and networks in the age of the
Internet and World Wide Web is a double-edged sword, creating both
positive and negative externalities, and generating planned outcomes and
unintended second order effects in near equal measure. On the one hand,
ubiquitous network access provides numerous benefits to business and
society; on the other, it has created a host of unforeseen problems and
technical challenges for organizations of almost every kind.

So-called information-level threats are based on the active or passive
distribution of key information to a large audience. Such information may
result from discussions in Usenet newsgroups or they may be created
purposefully with a certain impact in mind. Examples of such threats are
hoaxes, false rumors, revenge web sites, and joe jobs - spamming under the
name of a competitor which has the effect that the competitor is blamed
(and punished) for spamming.

Information-level threats need to be distinguished from more technical
threats (denial of service, content degrading or destruction).
Information-level threats are not targeted at computers and communications
networks, but at humans receiving the information: the primary lever of an
information-level attack is the content of a message or claim, rather than
its form. An implication of this is that information-level threats are
less about security in a technical or computational sense than notions of
propaganda, opinion formation, and perception management.

Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the
following:

* Identifying information-level activities in networked environments
* Security management, cyber forensics, and counterintelligence
* Strengths and limitations of commercially available Internet
   surveillance technology
* Commercial terrorism through the Internet
* Epistemological and neo-cortical warfare
* Information education - understanding information-based threats
* Digital defamation and free speech
* Journalism in the network age
* Branding in the age of the Internet
* Advertising vs. misinformation

The guest editors are seeking papers that address these and related
topics. Inquiries can be made to:

Christopher Lueg <lueg@...> or
Blaise Cronin <bcronin@...>

Manuscript submissions (Word files) should be addressed to:

Fax +61 2 9514 1807

The deadline for accepting manuscripts for consideration for publication
in this special issue is October 31, 2002. All manuscripts will be
reviewed by a select panel of referees. Original artwork and a signed
copy of the copyright release form will be required for all accepted
papers.

Workshop "Main Issues in Designing Interactive Mobile Services"
17 September 2002, Pisa, Italy, in conjunction to Mobile HCI '02
http://giove.cnuce.cnr.it/mobilehci02.html

The new 3G communications technology providing mobile access to
context-dependent services will strongly enhance and extend
communication possibilities in mobility.
Therefore, new design approaches, HF studies, behavioural theories and
evaluation techniques must arise in order to be able to design
interactive mobile artefacts that provide the user with a positive
experience.
The workshop intends to explore and analyse the main aspects in the
design of scenarios of context dependent services for the incoming 3G
mobile communication technologies. It is designed as a one-day practical
activity with relevant theoretical discussion, ending with a poster
design session.

Goals
*****
Development of a HF research agenda for this specific issue of
interaction with mobile devices, to identify and extend the research
community in this topic. Moreover, to sensitise designers to the
particular interaction-design issues in these kind of communication
scenarios (mobile and contextual learning models, interface evaluation,
etc.)

Background of the perspective participants
******************************************
The workshop is intended for practitioners working in the wireless
industry (telcos, device manufacturers, service providers, etc.) and for
HF academics and students with interests in human computer interaction,
technology-enhanced learning and mobile interaction. Participants will
be asked to submit a brief position paper of 2-4 pages, or a reference
to a mobile product/project in which they have been involved.
Participants will be selected on the basis of their interest in and
familiarity with the topic.

Detailed description of workshop
********************************
Participants will be invited to choose a format of context-dependent
mobile service and hypothesise a scenario of use (mainly when he is ‘on
the move’ - e.g. in a train, using a pocket PC or a mobile phone) that
will enhance users' interactive experience with their mobile devices.
Once the usage scenario is well defined, participants will required to
know (assume) the expectations, limitations and behaviour of mobile
users and design appropriate interaction models. Trans-cultural
adaptability and ethic aspects will be analysed. Good communication with
the service provider is a key factor to add value to the user, possibly
involving personalized services. A coerent and relevant multi-channel
identity, for example with related website, will be analysed to ensure
user’s fidelity.
Interface’s usability will be tested according to:
- learnability
- users’ satisfaction
- users’ expectations and perceived value of the services provided
- speed in task completion
- number of irreversible mistakes
- level of interaction enabled

How to participate
******************
Applicants for participation are asked to send a position paper (max.
4pages) in PDF (TXT or RTF) format to a.c.roibas@...

Deadline for submission is July 1, 2002.

Participants will get feedback by July 10, 2002 to allow for early
registration.

Registration to the workshop is required. For details and fee see Mobile

Digital Media Festival, now on its third year, celebrates
through "pag-uugnay", connecting, the fields of archaeology,
anthropology and new media art. The highlights of DMF2002 are the new
media installations constructed by students in the digital art
elective and workshop courses through collaboration with the
Archaeological Studies Program and Filipino visual artists known for
their interdisciplinary work in the fields of archaeology and
anthropology of art and religion.

DMF has invited Noell El Farol to interact with the students
investigating the relationship between archaeology and artistic
practice through an overview of his works and an open discussion on
the study of archaeology through cooperation with the Archaeological
Studies Program. Farol directed a centerpiece installation that
explores "archaeological recordings" based on his research and work
in "Hukay" (digging or pit). The installation work was constructed
through students' interpretation of site and situation specific to
the compounds of the College surrounding the gallery space. A
reassembly was conducted into the gallery.

Students in the digital media art workshop "Writing as Visual Form"
was directed by Roberto B. Feleo to construct a peripheral
installation, complementing the centerpiece with Farol. Through
discussions of several of his sculptural and installation works and
their socio-historical commentary, Feleo clarifies relationships
between anthropology of art, religion and contemporary artistic
practice. Through Feleo's guidance, students explored writing systems
as cognitive artifacts and their projections into contemporary
culture through a project entitled "Time Capsules."

The new media installation works directed by Farol and Feleo serve to
transform the Corredor Gallery space and adjacent areas into cognate
ritual spaces for connecting, the DMF theme "pag-uugnay", the past
with the future. The theme, "Iugnay" (to connect), is in cadence with
the vision to connect with fields traditionally seen as outside the
arts, where young student artists are seen as creative partners of
the technological forces that will push the country towards progress.
DMF looks at art as research and development, anticipating a shift
from a culture of political nationalism to creative research, as
young creative minds are acknowledged important forces in the larger
nationwide technological development plan that can transform the way
people think about the arts. Technological development is not only
about machines - it's also about creativity, an enlarged
understanding of cultures, and communicating.

RDS 2.0 EVENT PROBES RACE AND NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES

Most discussions of the "digital divide" erase the numerous
contributions of minority artists, activists, entrepreneurs,
journalists, and scholars. Researchers from the University
of California-Santa Barbara, MIT and USC's Annenberg Center
for Communication will host a three-day event, Race in
Digital Space 2.0, to explore current issues and celebrate
the accomplishments of minorities using digital technologies,
Thursday, 10 October through Saturday, 12 October 2002, at
LA's Museum of Contemporary Art and on the USC campus.

Day after day we engage with media and technology on
multiple fronts. The Race in Digital Space 2.0 Event defines
"digital space" as a flexible arena that reflects the
continual change of technology in relation to the practices
and processes of the everyday. Following upon both the
recent downturn in technology markets and the tragic events
of 9/11, the once-euphoric conversations about new media
have largely quieted. Race in Digital Space 2.0 seeks to
intervene in this constricted field, offering compelling
new analyses of both the potentials and the risks of new
technological development. This important event offers an
opportunity to comment on the ways media and technology are
used by a diverse array of citizens and to examine how this
interaction defines society and culture. Conference sessions
will explore current public policy affecting "digital
divide" and privacy issues, the global reach of new media,
as well as innovative and creative uses of technology within
communities of color. This international conference will
serve as a touchstone for thinking critically and usefully
about race in digital spaces.

Plenary presentations include 'The Digital Divide, Post
9/11'; 'Tracking Bodies and Global Labor'; 'Entertaining
Race: Representin' Race in New Media Environments';
'Re-making Race: Authenticating "Other" Voices in Digital
Spaces'; 'New Futures: Theory Meets Praxis'; and 'Live
Mixes: Teens and New Technologies.' A concurrent digital
salon will feature a number of cutting-edge art and music
performances as well as online exhibits and video
screenings. Featured speakers and artists include Isaac
Julien, Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky), Greg Tate, Todd
Boyd, Rubin D. Ortiz Torres, Sue Ellen Case, Wendy Chun,
Tony Wilhelm, Chela Sandoval, Daniel Martinez, Pamela Z,
Los Cybrids and many, many more!

The conference is free and open to the public. Registration
information and further details are available online at:

This is an invitation to join a new sociology/social psychology
discussion group (including all issues). We are located at the
university of Abertay Dundee. Scotland, but are interested in gaining
views and opinions from staff and students and interested parties all
over the world.
Feel free to forward this email to anyone you think may be interested in
taking part.

The all new sociopranos discussion board is now up and running at the
easier to remember www.sociopranos.com lecturers are more than welcome
to post comments, ideas etc. It's a little quiet at the moment but we
have Dr's, Professors and students from as far afield as Australia,
America and the UK so far. Remember to post a few comments, ideas or
just random floating ideas/questions to kick things off. This should
lead into indepth discussion with people all over the world interested
in sociology.

Joining is simple, click the 'register' link, choose a nickname, enter an
email address (note: this does not need to be real if you are worried
about privacy) and a password. You will then be registered to take part,
just login (if you've entered a 'fake' email address you will get a
message saying email not sent - ignore this and log in anyway).
The new site navigation is far simpler than the old site and will let
you know when you next visit if anyone has written anything new.
The site will be updated with all of the useful links that featured on
the old site and any links YOU wish added, just reply with the url and a
short description or alternately simply post the urls you want people to
know about in the 'links' section of the forum.
If you run a sociology related website and have a links section please
feel free to add our url.

**************************

Using the anthropology of science and technology as its focus this panel wants
to aks what contributions post-graduate researchers can make to the
introduction, application and evaluation of new research methods? It also aims
to provide a platform to present papers, exchange ideas and engage in
stimulating discussions.

During the last decade anthropology as a discipline has undergone a considerable
expansion and reorientation, both geographically and in terms of its research
interests. The demand for new approaches to the subject and new methods of
research was an important corollary of this change. The methodological
challenges faced by anthropologists conducting research in science and
technology included questions such as how to study dispersed, or virtual
communities? How to study 'up'? How to follow decentralised networks? Or how to
engage with other approaches to research, science or technology in the context
of fieldwork, to name but a few? The search for answer introduced the discipline
to new methods such as Actor-Network Theory, multi-sited ethnographies, the
anthropological study of a technology and the use of a technology itself, such
as email or the Internet, as a research tool.

Fro the purpose of this panel we would like to hear in what ways have those new
methods affected your research? What were your experiences as an anthropologist
in the field and in what ways have they influenced the choice of your methods or
your final analysis? Do you think post-graduate researchers can make a distinct
contributions to the methodology used in anthropology?

Though all papers dealing with some of the issues above are welcome, we would be
particularly interested in contributions that are situated outside the
boundaries of Western Europe or North America, or research that has applied some
of the aforementioned methods innovatively outside the context of the
anthropology of science and technology.

Friends,

APIC is looking for the most creative, imaginative and courageous thinkers and
doers of you to partner and provide services to a consortium led by APIC, as we
complete the last bits of architecting self-sustaining networked mind
cooperatives for shared ethos groups -- minds ecosystems. Below is the framework
from which your mind will need to be able to spring off from.

This is definitely NOT for is-there-really-more-to-life-than-covering-my-ass?
types.

Do you qualify? Do you have passion? Are you one of the rare "the cup is
half-full rather than half-empty" types?

Ecosystems Thinking For The Minds Ecosystem
By Bala Pillai
June 9 2002, Sydney
"Progress lies not in enhancing what is, but in advancing toward what will be."
-Kahlil Gibran, "A Handful of Sand on the Shore"

Each of us can see only up to a certain big picture cause-effect level. To
see cause-effect beyond that big picture level, one has to think and reflect
deeply or be attentive and be able to ask questions of one who does. As
well, one has to interact with unlike minds, for the very existence of
greater pictures to be sparked.

Ecosystems thinking has us to look at some of the biggest pictures possible.
The small picture-big picture continuum is best imagined by its
representation, concentric spheres.

Concentric spheres in turn are best recalled by their two-dimensional
equivalents, concentric circles -- yes, those reverberating circles you see
when you throw a stone into a pond. You may see 20 concentric circles.

Average man only sees with his eyes and he tends to believe
that his eyes cannot belie him. He is wrong. What you see is *not* the
truth, though it may be. For example, if you understood a tree by what you
see, you will understand wrongly, because you cannot see the photosynthesis
process. Neither can you see the crown roots. The most important parts of
the tree, are hidden to the naked eye.

If you trust your eyes fully, you are seeing the smallest concentric sphere.
It will not occur to you that much of what happens in this concentric
sphere, is caused by a sphere one size larger. And much of what happens in
the one size larger sphere was caused by a sphere yet another size larger.
This goes on and on.

Why is ecosystems thinking crucial today?

Let us take the Internet. It is really an emerging ecosystem of human minds that
combines those on the Net and those off (with wired human bridges).

It is working best where minds share a similar ethos -- where minds have
common references to build trust and relationships off.

When the ecosystem is more complete, it will thrive lots more than it is
thriving today. Some questions you may ask are:-

(a) Why is the ecosystem of minds on the Internet not working perfectly?

(b) What components are missing?

(c) What processes are missing?

(d) What components or processes are already there, but are not understood
well or not accorded the priority they deserve?

The answers to these are best found in paralleling Nature's ecosystem to
that of what the ecosystem of minds should have viz (a) to (d) when it is
much
closer to the completeness of Nature's ecosystem, than it is now.

For example, let us for argument sake, say that there are (i) 300 components
and (ii) 200 processes in Nature's ecosystem. We know that one of the
topmost processes in Nature is photosynthesis. Yet another topmost one is
symbiosis.

Question: What are the equivalents of photosynthesis and symbiosis in the
minds ecosystem? What are the hurdles to them forming? What returns are
there if these hurdles are removed? What ingredients are needed to remove
these hurdles and to forge these processes?

Why is photosynthesis important? It is at the bottom of the food chain. It
is the process by which trees and plants obtain resources to start the whole
food chain.

Now ask, what is the equivalent of photosynthesis in the ecosystem of minds
on the Internet? What is the most significant source of resources for
significant new Internet ventures? In the West, it is passionbits including
Open Source and venture capital. How about your ethos' space?

What are the parallels to the other 300 components and 198 processes in
Nature's ecosystem, in your minds ecosystem?

Would trust between participants be one? Would more intensive networking
between minds be another? Would networking between complementary folks, as
in Nature, make it more worthwhile? How can complementariness be revealed
easier? Would a database of profiles that is shared by participants be a
way?

Would a rating on each of the 6Rs be one?

[6Rs = resourcefulness, responsibility, responsiveness, reliability,
rapport-building, risk-taking]

How do we rate the 6Rs? Can we experiment with some of the models currently
used in psychological testing, while we find better ways?

Is interaction a precusor to trust building? How do we increase interaction?
What are the key ingredients of interaction, that make it a precursor to
trust building? Would the sense of "presence" when we see each other
face-to-face, be one? How do we recreate this in the minds ecosystem? Can we
go some way through the sense of presence in Instant Messaging and Webcams?

Of these which is of a higher priority than another? Why?

The solving of all these needs are income opportunities for minds in your
ethos space.

The unearthing of other whitespace, unfilled space in your minds ecosystem,
will show up all the other opportunities.

And that comes from ecosystems thinking. That is why ecosystems thinking is
important.

Greetings from Scotland!

The all new sociopranos discussion board is now up and running at the
easier to remember www.sociopranos.com
Issues vary from Sociology to Philosophy and everything in between.
It's a little quiet at the moment but we have Dr's, Professors,
Lecturers and students from as far afield as Australia, America, Canada,
Greece, Turkey, India and the UK so far. Remember to post a few
comments, ideas or just random floating ideas/questions to kick things
off. This should lead into indepth discussion with people all over the
world interested in sociology and social / philosophical issues.
We have just added a new section for internet, society and social
research.

Joining is simple, click the 'register' link, choose a nickname, enter an
email address and a password. You will then be registered to take part,
just login. The new site navigation is far simpler than the old site and
will let you know when you next visit if anyone has written anything
new.
The site will be updated with all of the useful links that featured on
the old site and any links YOU wish added, just reply with the url and a
short description or alternately simply post the urls you want people to
know about in the 'links' section of the forum.

If you run a sociology / philosophy related website and have a links
section please feel free to add our url. Or if you know someone who may
be interested please pass on our url.
We hope you can see the possibilities a global site such as this holds
and will take time to register and take part.
Thank You

ATE Conference: Massaging>Media
November 23, 2002
a week before US thanksgiving!
.........................................

The ATE conference (art, technology, experience) is a one-day event
presented by
the Dynamic Media Institute at MassArt and AIGA Boston. It is a forum of

artists/practitioners (filmmakers, performers, dancers, musicians,
designers, writers,
and illustrators) as well as theorists in culture, education,
architecture, and
philosophy.

The ATE conference is a collaboration, a dialog, a discourse, a lecture,
a
performance, a multi-disciplinary experiment, a multi-sensory experience
and, for all
of us, " ... a process of subliminally sniffing out environmental
change." (Marshall
McLuhan)

The ATE conference explores where we are, and what we EAT as a culture
with
regard to new media. It will be about ideas. No shameless self-promotion
is allowed.
You will feel that you ATE plenty.

"Is Big Business destroying the Internet?"
Key note speech by Bill Thompson
Chaired by Dr Richard Barbrook

Bill Thompson is a new media pioneer whose main interests lie in the
crossover between technology and culture. He has worked in IT as a
programmer, consultant, trainer and now as a writer and journalist. Bill
has been involved with the Internet since 1986 - "when you could read
all
of USENET each day and having an email address on your business card was
radical." He was formerly head of new media at Guardian Newspapers,
formerly technical manager of Nexus and formerly Campaigns Editor at
Internet Magazine. He writes a weekly column for BBC Online and is tame
geek on Go Digital on the World Service.

DR Richard Barbrook is a writer and lecturer on issues of digital
culture,
society and politics. He was a co-founder of Cybersalon and co-founder
of
The Hypermedia Research Centre at Westminster University where he
currently
teaches.
