All OK when server and client are on the same computer.
My Network
Server
PB G4 1GHz
Airport card
TCP Ports 8001, 8002 and 9001 dedicated to CyTV
Client
MBP
Airport Extreme card
TCP Ports 8001, 8002 and 9001 dedicated to CyTV
Remarque : On VLC, when I pause for a few seconds and play, TV play
for a few seconds before freezing.
Transcoding : I tried several setting in the Video and Audio bitraite
(did not touch the others). It does not influence anything.

Never has CyTV worked as well for me as it has done since the release of eyeTV 2.3.
Using it in bed at the moment on my MacBook, networked to my iMac downstairs partnered with a Miglia.
Hardly so much as a hiccup.
Only other thing that has changed is that I am using a Sony LocationFree base station as an access point -much more powerful than my NetGear or Apple Aiport Express.

That's odd. According to my own tests as well as user feedback, EyeTV
2.3 should work fine. Can you provide some more details (e.g. which
EyeTV model are you using, what are the exact symptoms, etc.)? It
might also help to have a look at the server log
(~/Library/Logs/CyTV/cytv_server.log on the server machine).

This looks like a network issue. Can you stream from the server to
itself (i.e. using the client on the same machine as the server)? What
kind of network do you have? If it's only Airport (802.11b), try using
a lower quality setting in EyeTV or use the transcoding options.

I have sent the Logs + Console logs @ cytv@yahoogroups.com. Hope this
helps.
I have updated EyeTV from 1.6 to 1.8.5 (2 and upon is not free)
The result is the same. I can connect to the server from the client.

Actually I set manually the digital channel on EyeTV but only TV Tuner
channel appear on the GUI channels listing.

It's true that CyTV doesn't work with EyeTV 2.2. I've been working on
a fix for quite a while, but it seems that it works again as is with
EyeTV 2.3 (just tested it for over an hour without a freeze).
If you have problems with EyeTV 2.3, could you provide some more details?

I get access to beta versions, and elgato also provided an EyeTV 200
for testing. My main problem with CyTV development is time - I cannot
really keep up with new EyeTV versions as fast as I'd like. There are
also tons of things I'd like to add to CyTV, but I simply don't have
enough time (day job, family, and recreation don't leave much of the
day - not to mention sleeping from time to time ;-)).
As for incorporating CyTV into EyeTV, you have to understand that CyTV
is still more or less a hack. It would be possible to include its
functionality into EyeTV, but not in the way it's currently implemented.

Andreas

Do you mean that the image freezes after a minute? If this is the case
and you're also using EyeTV 2.2, please update to EyeTV 2.3. If you
mean that the "Connecting to server ..." window stays on for a minute
with nothing happening, please send me the server log (in

problem is different (no freeze and no permanent "Connecting to server

For now, you have to select the digital channel in EyeTV manually. In
previous EyeTV versions, it wasn't possible to do this automatically
from CyTV - however, I just checked, and it seems possible now. I'll
try it and include it in the next CyTV version if it works.

Does anyone know the scoop with development? Pre 5 had issues with
EyeTV 2.2 and now it looks like it doesn't work at all with 2.3 ..
I gotta say that I love CyTV and you would think that Elegato would be
talking to the CyTV developer to incorporate CyTV into the EyeTV
product ..
Hello,
I tried CyTV for non Internet streaming recently but could not use it
properly.
Here is my case:
Server: PB G4 1GHz with EyeTV USB 1Go RAM. EyeTV box being fed by a
Internet television box (a Freebox for the French readers). Then I
don't use the tuner function on EyeTV USB, but only the digital channel.
Client: MB Pro (MacTel) with VLC 0.8.5.
Following the readme file, I launch CyTV Server, then CyTV Client. I
can see the server on the client. I can connect sthe serve from the
client but the TV image is not displayed although I want for more than
a minute.
I can see the channels numbers on the GUI but only the channels from
the tuner and not the digital channel.
I tried several setting either on CyTV server preferences or on my
firewall.

I was talking about the cache setting in CyTV Client (the "Cache size"
field at the bottom of the "Available CyTV Servers" window which
appears when you start the client and a server has been found).
Of course, as mentioned before, increasing the cache size will only
help if the problem is temporary. If your network can't bear the load,
you have to try one of the other suggestions from my last message.

The effective throughput of your network may simply be too low. If
there are only intermittant problems, you should be able to get the
stream going by using a larger cache size (e.g. 2048 or 4096 KB). If
this doesn't help, you can try to use the transcoding feature to
reduce the data rate of the stream. Alternatively, you can choose a
lower bitrate in EyeTV's settings (although this will affect the
quality of recordings).
Another possible source of problems is VLC 0.8.5. In principle, CyTV
does work with this version, but there are some issues like high
initial network load when starting a stream. Until the next CyTV
release is out, you should use VLC 0.8.4 or 0.8.2.
Finally, there's a problem with EyeTV 2.2 that has come up some days
ago. After streaming live TV for a while, EyeTV 2.2 will freeze (and
so will the stream). Until I've fixed it, you should use an older
EyeTV version for streaming.
If it still doesn't work, please let me know.
Regards,
Andreas
That sounds like the problem that I'm having. It's a real pain. What
version of CyTV and VLC are you using?
I'm using CyTV 0.6 pre 5 and VLC 0.8.5 intel or PPC. (get the problem
with either and on two different bit of hardware, used to work better
on G3 client.

Dual 1 gig as the sever with eyeTV 200 (fire wire) and a PowerBook g4 client
over an Apple
extreme network. I can't get enough buffer. It will only play for about 10
seconds. Is there a
preference or setting I am missing?
I am also using an Airport Express to extend the signal.
I've been having a problem with many ffmpeg processes appearing, thus slowing
the server
machine down very much. Also on the Intel client VLC 1.8.5 keeps restarting.
Server running on 20 inch iMac G5 with iSight.
Clients running on either 700MHz G3 iMac or 2GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook.
EyeTV for DTT is the EyeTV hardware.
Connection via an Airport Express. Ethernet between the AE and G3 iMac.
Can get a reasonable picture between iMacs.
Haven't managed to get the streaming to work to the MacBook, though I have
manged to
start the stream, but VLC just restarts repeatedly.
I also find it annoying that CyTV server is hiding EyeTV too often. I often find
myself with
someone watching something on the server iMac with someone else watching either
the same
thing or something else on one the other machines.

The settings are highly dependent on the actual connection speed. For common connection types, I'd suggest the following values:
Better network connections than 802.11b might or might not work without transcoding (depending on the EyeTV model used). You also have to be careful with the video and audio bitrates because ffmpeg doesn't necessarily obey the values if they're too low. For example, if you leave out the framerate parameter in the DSL-128 settings, you'll end up with much more than 80 kBit/s for video.
To come up with usable settings for a certain total bitrate, you should transcode a sample file with ffmpeg. Try specifing video and audio bitrates so that their sum is about 80-90% of the available bitrate. Then play around with the rest of the parameters until you get something that stays within these boundaries and looks (and sounds) good.
This is tedious work, and I want to incorporate such presets into CyTV Client some day, but for now, you have to experiment yourself. Please let me know if you have more questions (or when you find good settings).

The settings are highly dependent on the actual connection speed. For
common connection types, I'd suggest the following values:
DSL (128 kBit/s upstream):
transcode=true&videoBitrate=80&audioBitrate=32&width=160&height=120&samp
leRate=22050&numberOfChannels=1&framerate=15
DSL (256 kBit/s upstream):
transcode=true&videoBitrate=160&audioBitrate=64&width=160&height=120&samp
leRate=22050&numberOfChannels=1&framerate=15
DSL 512 (512 kBit/s upstream):
transcode=true&videoBitrate=320&audioBitrate=128&width=160&height=120
802.11b:
transcode=true&videoBitrate=1150&audioBitrate=192&width=320&height=240
Better network connections than 802.11b might or might not work

Hello,
I have build a widget eyeControl (http://ismileys.free.fr/eyeControl/
index.html) that can control EyeTV.
In his next release, I try to add CyTV support and remote streaming.
It works, but now I would like define 4 streaming setting:
- Best: defautl parameters
- High
- Medium
- Low:
transcode=true&videoBitrate=80&audioBitrate=32&width=176&height=144&samp
leRate=22050
But I don't know what I can use as streaming configuration.
Can you help me ?

Hi there,
the problem Markus had connecting from an Intel Mac via Rendezvous is
fixed in the latest beta: http://www.lucid-cake.net/cytv/cytv_0_6_pre5.dmg
The other issue (connecting over the internet) has been resolved via
private mail. The necessary steps are listed below (they're also
detailed in the CyTV ReadMe), but I really ought to make this easier.
I'll probably add a wizard to make the process more clear and help
avoid making mistakes.
To connect over the internet, here's what you have to do:
1.) *** IMPORTANT *** If it's not already on, activate the "Force
server port" option in CyTV Server's preferences. Be sure to choose a
port that's not already occupied (the current default of 8001 might be
used by QuickTime Streaming Server, so something like 8005 is a safer
choice). After making changes to the preferences, restart CyTV Server.
2.) Make sure at least one user is marked as allowed in CyTV Server's
preferences.
3.) Make sure the secure server port in the preferences has a useful
value (i.e. a port that is accessible from the outside, especially one
that has a forwarding defined in the router if you use one).
4.) Start the secure server from CyTV Server's Security menu.
5.) Export the server's key via CyTV Server's Security/Export server
key menu item.
6.) Start CyTV Client on the client machine.
7.) Check the "Manual" option if not already checked and enter the
hostname (or IP address) and port of the server. It has to be an
address that's accessible from the client machine, not an internal IP!
Example: "myserver.dyndns.org:8005" (without the quotes). Beware that
the port is the one you specified for the "Force server port" option,
not the one used as "Secure server port" in the server preferences!
8.) *** After that ***, click on the "Import Key ..." button and
choose the file with the server key you exported earlier (you have to
transfer this file to the client machine somehow, preferably via a USB
stick and not unencrypted over the net).
9.) Check the "Use secure connection" checkbox. For "Username", enter
the name of a user you allowed to connect in the server preferences.
It can be the full user name or the account's short name.
10.) Enter the secure server port in the "Port" textfield.
11.) Click on "Advanced" and choose transcoding options matching your
server's upstream bitrate. For 128 kBit/s upstream, example settings
could look like this:
Video bitrate: 80 kBit/s
Framerate: 15 fps
Width: 160
Height: 120
Audio bitrate: 32 kBit/s
Sample rate: 22050 Hz
# of channels: 1
If you have faster upstream rates, you can use higher bitrates.
After following these steps, you should be able to connect. But as I
said, this whole process needs to get easier.
Regards,
Andreas

Are you sure you're using the latest client (0.6-pre4) on the MacBook?
I'll test the client myself on an Intel Mac mini tomorrow and let you
know what I find out.

The secure server uses the already existing user accounts (and
passwords) of your OS X installation on the server.

Hi,
Do you use an Intel-only environment?
My Setup:
G5 PowerMac as CyServer
CyClients:
G4 Powerbook
Intel MacBookPro
The G4 Powerbook connects fine.
But the Intel MacBookPro doesn't.
No Security, no proxy, only the latest downloads:
vlc 0.8.4
Besides...where can I set the password, when I enable the security server?
CyTV client asks for one and I don't see it to be set on the server.
Cheers,
Markus

Since there seems to be quite some demand for this feature, I'll
integrate it into one of the next versions (probably 0.6 final).

Hello,
First of all I would like to thank Andreas for this great piece of
software and for opening up this 'Group' so that we can all share our
experiences with cytv...
I don't know if I'm the only one, but it seems i'm unable to get
cytv0.6pre3 client to work on my Intel Mac Mini. Either in 'Automatic'
mode or 'Manual mode' it hangs when attempting to connect to the
server... When I load up 0.5.4 client, it works fine... I am connecting
via the internet and using the transcoding option, connecting through
port 9001 (forced)...
Client config :
Mac Mini Intel 10.4.6
cytv 0.6pre3
VLC 0.8.5a
Transcoding On
Server Config :
G4 Dual 867 10.4.5
cytv 0.6pre3 (port forced to 9001)
---
Additional question... I'm sure it is possible but I'm looking for the
quick way to save the live stream on the client computer... I know it
can be done via VLC directly, but it would be nice if this feature
could make it into the cytv client...!
Kind regards,
Frederic
Thanks for all ;)

Hi,
I'me the author of WidgetCineTV. This widget displays French TV listing and you
can add
events in iCal, or add records in EyeTV or in iMagneto.
But with this widget, you can call EyeTV and change channel in live.
Do you think it is possible to add AppleScrit in your CyTV client ?
