Hi,

Thanks so much for your ideas. The folks at Cary have
issues an RMA number. However, I'd much prefer using a
repair shop in Dallas as two way postage will be a
killer.

If the Cary is indeed dead, maybe a cheap transport
and Nixon or other DAC might be in order-just as you
suggested.

Thanks,
Ed

Custom built, standing just at 6ft tall. Ten 5.25" Silver Flute
woofers, and one 1" Bottlehead straight eight tweeter per side. Biamp /
Biwire. Rear ported. They load up in the mid 40's in room. I did choose
to mate these with a high end 15" Signet subwoofer, for that last
octave - but a lot of people that have listened to them, prefer it
without. 95db efficient, and you cannot blow them up. 10 watts is more
than enough, and I've fed over 220 to them without a hint of the wheels
about to shoot off.

The sound? You'll sh*t your flat hat. Soundstage? Re-define what you
reference is for this word. These are one of kind, and though I hate to
see them go - the part of the hobby I love the most is trying new gear,
and it's time.

Local sale, will help with delivery if need be, they are heavy - about
150 lbs each. $700 Dallas Audio Club Members Only - I don't want to
take the sale public, I'd like to see these stay in the family, so to
speak. Demos welcome.

Cheers,
Russ

Dust and audio/video equipment.

Dust loves electronics and it seems I spend a lot of time dusting my
gear. More so than the rest of the house. Weapons used in my dust war
have been feather dusters, cotton rags, damp cotton rags, glass
cleaner on the TV screen. It's a CRT. Even anti static sprays
designed for clothing and those designed to keep dust off ceiling fan
blades. These with mixed results. I always keep in mind some such
chemical could harm audio gear surfaces. And in my case home made
wood chassis. I'm sure I'm not the first to discover this little
trick but I tried a paint brush with 2 and 1/4 inch long soft
bristles the other day. It proved very useful and effective when
brushing on and around tubes and transformers on my amps. Getting to
nooks and crannies in a quick, time saving, effective way. It really
worked well in, on and around odd crevices and cracks of the tonearm,
cartridge and under the platter edges. A much more secure feeling
than a cloth and the worries of snagging that stylus. Anyway, it
seems to be a good weapon in the war on dust. Hope this is useful to
some. Any other ideas on keeping dust at bay? 8:-) jim...

Home page photo shows one of several Dynaco PAS preamps I've modified to be phono only. Mods include

1:  Lift and isolate power transformer from chassis. ala... John Camille check low AC leakage polarity.
2: RCA's, wire and solder from Chimera Labs ala... Dennis Boyle
3: New larger voltage, close to stock uf value caps for filament  supply.  UF 4007's diodes replaced old selenium rectifier.
4: Close to stock value B+ except larger last stage. Solen polyprop's replaced the stock electrolytic can cap.
4: All resistors (PRP & Holco) and circuit board capacitors (Illinois Caps) hand matched from a large stock on hand.
5: Phono eq caps are polyprop and polystyrene's from Tanner's. Also hand matched.

I realize many may say there are better caps and resistors but this modded thing sounds pretty darn good.

Re: Lone Star Audio Fest - May 4-6

I still get emails from my former audio club in New Orleans. I
thought I'd share an email I received from them (Duke Lejeune
specifically) regarding the Lone Star Audio Fest and other tangents
from Duke that may be of interest.

Many of you probably know Duke from the online message boards. If
he's coming down all the way from Idaho (he moved from New Orleans
too) for the show, I would presume the show has some potential.

"Greetings Audio Club members,

I wanted to let ya'll know about a very enjoyable internet radio
station, ART Radio. It's the creation of Melissa Parham, whose
husband Wayne (of Pi Speakers) has instigated the Lone Star Audio
Fest coming up in Dallas on May 4-6.

Here's a link to the Lone Star Audio Fest site, where I'll be
sharing an exhibit room with Richard (Gray) and Nick:

http://www.lonestaraudiofest.com/

Anyway, the radio station is called ART Radio (stands for Audio
Round Table - Wayne's internet forum), and here is a link from which
you can access the streaming audio:

http://audioroundtable.com/General/messages/4380.html

The playlist is compiled by Melissa from songs that the listeners
recommend. How cool is that?? One of my older son's songs made it
onto the playlist, so if you hear "Switchtech Circuitry" by Klez -
that's Joseph. The song's style is something that Arthur Jung
might listen to - Lori and I both think of Arthur when we hear it.

We miss ya'll.

Here's a link to the Audio Round Table main page:

http://www.audioroundtable.com/

Under "sponsored forums" you might see a name you recognize.

Let me put in a plug for Wayne: He devotes a great deal of time,
money and energy to promoting high end audio. His company, Pi
Speakers, is basically superb high-efficiency designs that he will e-
mail you the plans for, free of charge! And even if you purchase
completed speakers, the price is still very low considering the
parts cost. Wayne is definitely one of the good guys. He taught
me a great deal about crossover design in a free seminar he gave at
the sadly discontinued Midwest Audio fest a few years ago, which I
attended with Jim Clark.

Meanwhile I'm trying to start up an audio club here in potatoland,
and our first meeting will be this Friday the 20th. Half the
people there will be sharks (dealers), and half swimmers (the rest
of the world). Oh well, gotta start somewhere.

Cheers,

Duke"

It isn't on the LSAF web page just yet, but two more exhibitors have
added their names to the list.

Our own Russ will host a Polk Audio room, where he will exhibit Polk's
reference bookshelf MTM, the LSi9, and the RTi10 (reference theater)
floorstander. The fest will be the FIRST public demonstation of Polk's
DSW PRO subwoofer - it was displayed at CES, but our fest will be the
first to hear it. Russ will also have a pair of Monitor 30's, Polk's
entry level shelf speaker to raffle off to some lucky attendee.

Brad Baker of Houston will be there with his Hawthorne Audio Silver
Iris Duet open back speakers driven by a Trends TA-10.1 amp (the winner
of the integrated division in the recent "Great Digital Amp Shootout
2007").

Mike Wyatt of AudioMagus is sending me a fully modded TA-10.1 Michael
Mardis edition for use in the AudioRoundTable Group Build room.

A great opportunity to visit an audio show for locals. No travel to Denver, New York, California or Vegas required. Audio Clubs will be represented from Tulsa, Houston and Dallas. Not to mention a spread of Bottleheaders! Hope to see everyone there. jim...

The Keith Monk belongs to John Semrad. He rebuilt it. Don't think he
plans on selling it but you never know. He may respond when he reads
this. Sorry you can't make the show. jim...
