Does anyone have the phone number for Les Sims?

I have an MC-60 from Hell that has a hum problem I can't find. I am
tired of throwing parts in it.

Thanks,

Hello all,

I have some items to donate to anyone interested in picking up some
free audio goodies. Please call me at 972-998-6109 to arrange or email
xsheaffer@...
I am in Wylie.
1) I have a stack of recently acquired vinyl - older original pressing
stuff it appears. I never went through it and do not know condition.
It is 12"-14" tall as a stack and best of all, free.
2) Room treatment/sound damping materials - a good bit of it. It is
closed cell foam stuff.

I also have an extra pair of Azzolina Gran Sfera high efficiency horn
speakers for sale at a very good price.

Thanks,
Scott

super cool lookin', jim, ken.  looks like ken is doing some great stuff with diy tt projects.  over on my end of things, i've got a pretty good sounding mockup of my lenco l78 rebuild going with the bearing serviced and the top plate stripped of all things rattly; big chores coming are to fill all the holes and slots and repaint, and then do the plinth.  been so hot and humid i just can't stand the thought of standing out in the big yard sweating in a cloud of sawdust.

I asked my pal Ken Valliant to try and build a DIY 12 inch tonearm.
Results of his latest valiant effort are on the Home Page. I'll add a
photo folder too. A DIY 12 inch tonearm built with a Pioneer rear end.
A graphite or carbon fiber? golf club used for the tube. It's mounted
on a Gates rim drive turntable. Shure 97. And it sounds mighty fine.
Thanks Ken!!!

Morning Jim,
As one of my audio pals in L'anse, Michigan says "Ain't this stuff fun". It's an exciting audio world we live in. It's great to have speaker builders, turntable craftsmen and tube tinkerers all so close and in touch. Good luck with your turntable project. I must confess I've been listening to my music server more often than not lately. But Ken and others have lit a fire under me and I've probably played more vinyl in the week than in the last six months! Plus I'll bet I've tried 4 or 5 cartridges on as many turntables this month! Keep us up to date with your project. jim...

Building a great sounding, (relatively) inexpensive tube phono stage

Home page photo and in our Photos section under "Dyna PAS Phono only"
The first leg (of the PS) has two 47 uf at 250 volt in series with resistors across them to equalize the voltage drop over each cap. Making it about 24 uf at 500 volt.  Well above Dyna's B+ for each leg.
The second leg is 33 uf at 630 volt. Making it 33 uf at 630 volt
The last leg is two 20 uf at 400 volt in parallel. Making it 40 uf at 400 volt.  Voltage on this leg of the circuit  is below 250 volts even at turn on.
This is similar to the original capacitance rating. But notice each  leg consecutive has a higher capacitance rating in uf than the former. This gleaned from an article, with measurements. I read that if you make each leg larger than the last, you have a smoother, more constant B+.
www.tubesandmore.com sells 630 volt Solens.
http://www.partsconnexion.com/ is where I got the 400 volt Solens. Also hand matched Holco and PRP brand resistors from here.
The board is populated with Sprague 716P film and foil polypropylene caps from www.tubesandmore.com  These were also hand matched from a large quantity.
The phono eq caps are from Tanner's. Hand matched.
The white wire in this build is from stripped apart Audioquest long grain copper cable.
I've built several of these. In two others I used Chimera Labs sourced CCC wire and RCA's.
The transformer is on rubber feet. Sourced from Tanner's. Most tweaks I've learned from John Camille, Dennis Boyle and Walter Delesandri. Slight change in phono eq from Walter.

A shot in the dark here, but lets see. Not too long ago a pair of Eminent Technology LFT 8's were for sale in The greater Metroplex. If any of you have them and if they are still for sale or know of a pair out there for sale, drop me a line or call me at 615 260 9569  as to who has them, how much $, etc., etc., etc.,

I have a DIY Scott Nixon Tube DAC for sale. It was one of Jims DACs
that he built awhile back and I put it in a different chassis. Power
supply with mods built in... Asking $395.00

You can see it in the photo section under Tube DAC

Thanks

I was over at Nortex Electronics in Benbrook today and received word
that Lewis Cearly had passed away a week ago yesterday. I'm not sure
how many of you had the pleasure of knowing Lewis, but he was a true
gentleman and will be greatly missed.

I'm truly saddened to hear this. I've only visited Nortex a few times over
the last several years but always enjoyed the opportunity to talk with Mr.
Cearly.

He will be missed. His knowlege and his humor. I spent many hours and
many years going through the "goodies" at Nortex. Maybe John can give
us some history after his return from the Rocky Mountain Audiofest.

If so I'm interested.

Thanks,

The building bug has bit hard and my goals are on a SE 833 amplifier.
This means that my SE 211 amp must go to fund the new project. The
amp puts out 25WPC. It has GE VT-4 tubes and Sylvania 6SN7 tubes.
Details of the amplifier can be found in the Nov 2005 featured in
audioxpress. Additional pictures can be seen at the latest Bottlehead
meet http://lonestarbottleheads.org/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=38

I am asking $3000.00 which basically covers the materials in the
amplifier.
I would prefer not to ship the amplifier so local sales are
preferred. While I am not in Dallas, I can deliver from Austin.
If interested, I can be reached at lee_roitberg@...
Thank you for looking.

My latest phono stage on home page and in photos section under "Ken and
Jim's phono toys". Most parts are new except original Dyna phono
circuit board and power transformer. Built inside a dead Phase Linear
Scratch and Pop Eliminator chassis. A Dynaco PAS with Joe Curcio
upgrade suggestions. Thanks to member Philip Holmes for that
suggestion. Checking old schematics, Joe's suggestions bring the RIAA
curve to about what is in an Audio Research SP6B. The PT is lifted and
isolated on rubber stand-offs from Tanner's Electronics in Dallas. Also
from Tanner's, the PS board, UF4007 diodes, all PS caps are Nichicon
high voltage, high temp electrolytic caps. polystyrene RIAA caps and
some resistors. Other resistors and 716P film and foil polypropylene
caps (with copper leads) from www.tubesandmore.com or
http://www.partsconnexion.com/ Both boards and old stock rectifier
tube socket are on metal strew/nylon stand-off combos about one inch or
so. Haven't burned in yet but "out of the box" it sounds fine. May
build an L-shaped cage between the phono board and PS.

Hi guys,
I can't get into the Photos section of the group site.

I can get into the Files section, the Links, Database, Polls, etc., but
whenever I try to open the Photos link, Yahoo asks me to sign in again.

Anyone else having this problem?

I checked my membership info and it seems to be OK. It's not bouncing
or anything.

I will be hosting an informal open house in south Arlington on Friday, November 23 from 1-7p CST to demonstrate my new quasi-DIY speakers.  I am not well equipped to entertain a large crowd, but I would like to invite anyone from DAC who would like to come.  I have never hosted anything like this before, so this should be interesting. :)  I will have light snacks available.  If you are interested in attending, please email me your RSVP and I will send you directions.

The system is a surround sound setup comprised of 5 Linkwitz LAB PLUTOs, an omni-directional active loudspeaker (http://linkwitzlab.com/Pluto/intro.htm).  Two of them have the PLUTO+ subwoofer.  I also have a Rythmik Audio DS-15 sealed subwoofer ( http://rythmikaudio.com/) that can handle just about anything you throw at it.  I have been working on this system for about the last eight months in my "spare time".

Bring your favorite demo material.  My main source is an Oppo DV-980H, which can play Audio CDs, MP3 CDs,  HDCD, SACD, DVD-Audio, and DVD-Video.  Anything else and you will have to bring your own source component.  I am using a Harman Kardon AVR-247 for a surround preamp/processor/DAC/etc.

Pictures of various phases of my project are available in four galleries:

Cameron

Beautiful work.
Great craftsmanship.

I'm anxious to hear the Pluto setup.
I'm working on a Orion style open baffle - 2 channel.

I have heard a lot about the Rythmik Audio subs so anxious to hear that also.

I live in North Arlington so will swing by sometime on Friday.
