What did the log say for the user when they hit the site?

Subject: [dansguardian] Trouble with a website - can only access if PC
is in exceptioniplist

Hit an odd one today - I have someone trying to access a website that
seems
to ONLY work if I add a computer to exceptioniplist.

If I remove the PC from exceptioniplist, it cannot display, like the PC
is
not even connected to the internet.

The one catch I'm seeing as a hint is that the internal subnet is
10.0.0.XXX, and the site is actually on 192.XXX.XXX.XXX - not a local
subnet, but close - I'm worried I missed some config option that is
making
dansguardian look in the wrong location for the site?

Found it and for posterity sakes I'll post the solution here.

The issue deals with the group names. The group names within the
dansguardianf1, f2, f3, etc... an be customized. However, the
filtergrouplist must have user=filter1, user=filter2 where filter1 =
dansguardianf1, filter2=dansguardianf2, etc...

Hi

I considering setting up a filtering squid proxy again but I thought I
ask first how good the current AD block list is.
I was using SquidGuard back in 2005, here is the head of that rulefile:

Anyways they were crappy back then and now it doesn't even exist so I
thought I give a shot for DG because it's might be better.
Or is there better AD block modul/ ad domain list than what DG can offer?

Thanks

I began writing a perl script that would take the "easyfilter" list from
AdBlockPlus for firefox and turning it into a regex list for dansguardian. I
never finished the script though. I think that would be a very powerful way
to block ADs since the list is updated regularly. I'm just not uber enough
to code it.

Yeah this was my feeling as well. ADblock plus+Flashblock+Noscript
ubers this DG and squidguard too.
Then I don't bother :)

Subject: Websites Restriction based on time ?

Hi,

i would like you to assist me in configuring dansguardian to give access to
users based on time. I would like to give to users access to restricted websites
at lunch time and after lunch. I have two groups: one group is having more
access privileges than the second(this one in blanket).
I did some configurations on the bannedsites files and greysites files by
enabling them based on time but it seems it cannot run on 2 different set of
time (meaning between: 12h-14h and 18h-19h) at the same time. it runs one of the
set.
My question is there a way of doing this with dansguardian? If yes how do i have
to configure this?

Thank you in advance

I'm sure there's a more elegant method, but I think you could do this with a
couple of shell scripts that swap out group lists based on a cron job.

Assuming you're running in a *nix environment, of course.

Back on this subject after a bit of a hiatus. Here is an example of a site I
would like to block – http://www.vector-logos.com/mg_goods_ru.htm or
http://vnemira.ru/a-freeadds/tov but I’m having trouble creating phraselists.
I copy text from the page, (Знакомства, Russian for “dating”)
such as past it into a phraselist file and get ‘????????’ instead of the
actual font characters.

Now whatever is causing this, I don’t know. I thought it’s because my linux
firewall distro doesn’t have the font installed. Apparently not… But what IS
the problem?

Thanks,

Dave

installing extra font packs for DG? Or am on the wrong trail altogether?

Catching phrases from websites has nothing to do with fonts. Fonts are the
graphical representation of Characters.
Interesting for DG is the character encoding, which maps characters to their
binary representation. Ages ago the most used encoding was simply ASCII, but
today it's a little more complicated. While many american and european sites use
ISO-8859-1, the universal UTF-8 encoding gets more and more popular.
http://cred-fin.ru/ uses UTF-8.
In general, DG doesn't care about encoding, which can be called a feature, not a
bug. You can write phraselists in any encoding a site may probably use.
If you wish to block content using different encodings on different sites, you
have to add the phrases in all possible encodings to the appropriate lists.
In this example, http://cred-fin.ru/, you just have to make sure, your russian
phraselists are UTF-8 encoded (as far as I can see, it is a financial site, so I
don't know, why blocking it at all).

Cheers,
seBASStian

Hello,

I recently set up a web proxy using Dansguardian and squid on ubuntu 9.10. I
used some regular expressions to block the whole Internet except for a few sites
that i unblocked using the ExceptionSiteList(domains). But i ran in to a small
problem. both maps.google.com and mapquest.com don't function correctly.
Mapquest only loads a line or two of the header text and then quits.
Maps.google.com loads, but when you type in an address and hit the map button it
just sits and hangs. both Google.com and mapquest.com are listed in the
exception list. I cant seem to figure out how to make these sites load
correctly. I looked around on the Internet and didn't run in to anything
helpful. is there something i am over looking?

Thanks,

Monitor the log files when you're visiting one of those sites. At the
command line, type in

tail -f /var/log/dansguardian/access.log

then then visit maps.google.com and see what logs get spit out. That will
give us a clue what's happening.

Thanks,

Dave

I ran the command "tail -f /var/log/dansguardian/access.log" and then looked in
to the /var/log/dansguardian/access.log while loading the sites. I discoved
that the reason why the images and pages where only half loading is because the
images are linked from other sites. sites that are not in the exception list.
The regular expressions i used to block the internet are as follows
(/*.com/*)
(/*.net/*)
(/*.org/*)
(/*.info/*)
(/*.mobi/*)

there are a few more i didn't list. My plan was to block the entire Internet
except for about 100 web pages. These would be listed in the exceptions list.
but now i see that this will prevent images and content on the Allowed sites
from loading, if they are linked to from an external source. I don't think i
can adequately go through and add all the sites and references to other sites
that these allowed sites require. Or that i would always know what they where
for that matter. Here is a clip from the log file when Mapquest.com was
accessed.

Is there a way to allow everything on a site that is in the exception list even
the images and data pulled to the allowed site from an external source? I
think i can just add mqcdn.com to the exception list and fix the mapquest.com
problem. but a few of the other sites have data thats pulled from multiple
sources.

Is there a better way to achieve what i am trying to do? or did i possibly make
an error in my theory of banning all allowing only the few sites that are
needed?

Thank you for your time and input,

Richard

Monitor the log files when you're visiting one of those sites. At the
command line, type in

tail -f /var/log/dansguardian/access.log

then then visit maps.google.com and see what logs get spit out. That will
give us a clue what's happening.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello,

I recently set up a web proxy using Dansguardian and squid on ubuntu 9.10. I
used some regular expressions to block the whole Internet except for a few
sites that i unblocked using the ExceptionSiteList(domains). But i ran in to
a small problem. both maps.google.com and mapquest.com don't function
correctly. Mapquest only loads a line or two of the header text and then
quits. Maps.google.com loads, but when you type in an address and hit the
map button it just sits and hangs. both Google.com and mapquest.com are
listed in the exception list. I cant seem to figure out how to make these
sites load correctly. I looked around on the Internet and didn't run in to
anything helpful. is there something i am over looking?

Thanks,

Richard.

would use Blacket Block mode instead regular expressions to achieve a
whitelist. In the /etc/dansguardian/bannedsitelist file, you’ll find this
section:

#Blanket Block##. To block all sites except those in the

#exceptionsitelist and greysitelist files, remove

#the # from the next line to leave only a '**':

#**

Change #** to ** and VOILA, you’ll have Blanket Block mode.

>>I don't think i can adequately go through and add all the sites and references
to other sites

>>that these allowed sites require. Or that i would always know what they where

>>for that matter.

That’s one of the major hassles of the whitelist / Blanket Block mode. You do
have to physically enter every site you want to use, whether you directly enter
the site into the browser address bar, or whether the site is used somewhere in
the webpage code.

Thanks,

Richard

I've actually made good use of the first squid instance, but this bug should
probably be fixed anyway, feel free to ask if you need more information.

Dave- Sounds like the text editor you are using won't take those characters.
Maybe try editing the phrase file in a modern text editor that supports the
encoding then upload the file to the dans box.

i recently purchased a small asus netbook and the previous owner said it was
only used once and it was still in box, unfortunately for me i dont think
this was true. with your very strong filtering i can't search anything
without it blocking me and calling it pornography. this is great for kids
but not me. please help me find out how to remove this filtering program. my
name is brandon, thankyou. ps--someone named jason was already signed in to
your mailing list members area on yahoo when i was linked.

If you want to shut dansguardian off you can type this in the command line.
"sudo /etc/init.d/dansguardian stop" with out the quotes. I am assuming your
running Linux and dans guardian is installed locally. You can also unset the
proxy in your webbrowser so that it doesn't go through dansguardian.

So, let's summarize how to remove dansguardian from our EEEs:

Ctrl-Alt-T gets you a terminal.

sudo dpkg --purge dansguardian squid squid-common That will get rid of the
offending packages + configuration.

sudo rm /etc/policycontrol/firewall.conf and reboot.

That will get rid of the system forcing you through the (now missing) proxy.
