Time: 6:30pm - Pizza & Beverages (Courtesy: Copacast), 7:00pm - talk

Location: SAP LABS, Building D, 3410 Hillview Avenue, Palo Alto, CA (Google Maps

Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
Topic
Several approaches to collaborative filtering have been studied but seldom have
the studies been reported for large (several millions of users and items) and
dynamic (the underlying item set is continually changing) settings. This talk
will focus on our approach to collaborative filtering for generating
personalized recommendations for users of Google News. We generate
recommendations using three approaches: collaborative filtering using MinHash
clustering, Probabilistic Latent Semantic Indexing (PLSI), and covisitation
counts. We combine recommendations from different algorithms using a linear
model. Our approach is content agnostic and consequently domain independent,
making it easily adaptible for other applications and languages with minimal
effort. The talk will describe our algorithms and system setup in detail, and
report results of running the recommendations engine on Google News.

About the Speaker
Mayur Datar works as a Research Scientist with Google Inc. His research
interests are in datamining, algorithms, databases and computer science theory.
Prior to joining Google, Mayur obtained his doctorate degree in computer science
from Stanford university and a Bachelor of Technology degree from I.I.T. Bombay.
He was awarded the President of India, Gold Medal for being the most outstanding

RapidMiner has that feature. There is a pre-processing filter called
Nominal2Numeric, which does like you ask.

Thanks I solved that part of my problem. I found I can export the DB
as text, and then 1 week later, or 30 days later, I can export the DB
again with just the price, and I found that RapidMiner is able to read
the 1st text file, and also read just one column from the 2nd text
file (the price), and then I can generate the gain or loss % using
simple arithmetic as a pre-processing step internal to the
application. Then I can learn on that data.

The use of dummy variables has already been mentioned by another
respondent. Another possibility is to replace the nominal values with
the mean of the target variable for cases with that nominal value.

To illustrate, consider a data set which (among other things) contains
a nominal variable, "Fruit" with possible value "Apple", "Orange" and
"Coconut", and the target variable is a number. For "Apple" cases,
the new variable will contain the average target value across all
"Apple" cases. For "Orange" cases, the new variable will contain the
average target value across all "Orange" cases, and so forth. This
method can be used for binned numeric variables as well, and (given
certain assumptions) allows handling of missing values (simply as one
more class). Note, too, that this will work with numeric targets and
nominal targets with 2 distinct values (0 and 1).

----------------------------------------------------------------------
in conjunction with The Third International Conference on
Availability, Reliability and Security - ARES 2008
(http://www.ares-conference.eu/conf/)
March 4th â€" 7th, 2008
Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain

Overview
--------
Nowadays, the rapid growth of information technologies has brought
tremendous opportunities for data sharing, integration, and analysis
across multiple distributed, heterogeneous data sources. In the past
decade, data warehousing and mining are the well-known technologies
used for data analysis and knowledge discovery in vast domain of
applications.

Data mining technology has emerged as a means of identifying
patterns and trends from large quantities of data. Data mining has
used a data warehousing model of gathering all data into a central
site, then running an algorithm against that data.

A growing attention has been paid to the study, development and
application of data warehousing and mining. Nevertheless,
dependability aspects in these applications such as availability,
reliability, integrity, privacy, and security issues are still being
investigated. For example, in data warehousing applications, privacy
considerations may prevent the approach of collecting data into the
centralized warehouse because each data source has different privacy
policy. Furthermore, the complexity of security increases as
different sources of information are combined. Reliable, consistent
and trustworthy of information are also significant requirements in
data warehousing applications. Data mining has been shown to be
beneficial in confronting various types of attacks to computer
systems such as fraud detection, intrusion prevention. In some
applications, e.g. clinic information system, government management,
business competitive information, it is required to apply the mining
algorithms without observing the confidential data values thus
demands the privacy preservation. There are also many challenging
issues that need further investigation in the context of data mining
from both privacy and security perspectives such as mining of
imbalanced data, bioinformatics data, streaming data, ubiquitous
computing data, grid computing data etc.

The goals of this workshop are to bring together users, engineers and
researchers (from industry and academy) alike to present their recent
work, discuss and identify problems, synergize different views of
techniques and policies, and brainstorm future research directions on
various dependability aspects of data warehousing and data mining
applications. We strongly encourage researchers and practitioners
with interest in the areas of reliability, availability, privacy and
security, databases, data warehousing, data mining, and statistics
to submit their experience, and/or research results.

Topics related to any of dependability aspects in data warehousing
and mining, theory, systems and applications are of interest. These
include, but are not limited to the following areas:

· Dependability and fault tolerance
· High Availability and Disaster Recovery
· Survivability of evaluative systems
· Reliability and Robustness Issues
· Accuracy and reliability of responses
· Reliable and Failure Tolerant Business Process Integration
· Reliable Event Management and Data Stream Processing
· Failure Tolerant and trustworthy Sensor Networks
· Highly available data warehouses for business processes integration
· Handling different or incompatible formats, and erroneous data
· Privacy and security policies and social impact of data mining
· Privacy preserving data integration
· Access control techniques and secure data models
· Encryption & Authentication
· Pseudonymization and Encryption
· Anonymization and pseudonymization
· Trust management, and security
· Security in Aggregation and Generalization
· User Profile Based Security
· Secure multi-party computation
· Secondary use of personal data, clinic data, credit record
· Fraud and misuse detection
· Intrusion detection and tolerance
· Data mining applications for terrorist detection
· Private queries by a (semi-trusted) third party
· Query authentication, logging, auditing, access control and

Mapping and aligning sequences to genomes across different species
Presented by Thomas Wu, Senior Scientist, Bioinformatics, Genentech

Date: Wednesday, 14 November 2007, 6:30 PM
Time: 6:30pm - Pizza & Beverages (Courtesy: Copacast), 7:00pm - talk

Location: SAP LABS, Building D, 3410 Hillview Avenue, Palo Alto, CA (Google Maps
| Yahoo! Maps | Mapquest)
Cost: Free and open to all who wish to attend, but membership is only $10/year.
Topic
The availability of entire genome sequences has prompted researchers in
bioinformatics to use genomes as universal coordinate systems for mapping
various types of sequence information. In turn, bioinformatics researchers need
computer programs that can efficiently and accurately map and align nucleotide
and protein sequences to entire genomes. The problem of mapping and aligning
cDNA sequences to genomes for the same species has essentially been solved, with
programs such as GMAP. The remaining issues in the field are the ability to
handle cross-species alignments and protein sequences. Cross-species alignments
enable us to leverage our knowledge about one species onto another. Mapping and
alignment of protein sequences has certain advantages over nucleotide sequences,
especially in cross-species comparisons, because protein sequences are
evolutionarily more conserved than nucleotide sequences. In this talk, I will
discuss our recent work in extending
the algorithmic ideas of GMAP to handle cross-species and protein sequences.

Post-Mining of Association Rules: Techniques for
               Effective Knowledge Extraction

A book edited by Dr. Yanchang Zhao, Prof. Chengqi Zhang
                    and Dr. Longbing Cao
To be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group)
   http://www-staff.it.uts.edu.au/~yczhao/IGI-book/CFC.htm
***********************************************************

Introduction
------------
There are often a huge number of association rules
discovered in a data mining practice, making it difficult
for users to identify those that are of particular interest
to them. Therefore, it is important to remove insignificant
rules and prune redundancy as well as summarize, visualize
and post-mine the discovered rules. Moreover, the
information we can get from traditional association rules
is very limited, so new forms of association rules are
needed to discover useful and actionable knowledge. The
book aims to present a whole picture of the post-analysis,
summarization and new forms of association rules and
introduce the up-to-date research on the above topics to
extract useful knowledge from a large number of discovered
association rules.

The Overall Objective of the Book
---------------------------------
The book will focus on the post-analysis of association
rules to extract useful and actionable knowledge from a
large number of discovered rules. It will cover interest,
redundancy, post-mining, summarization, presentation and
visualization of association rules, as well as novel forms
and new trends of association rules. It will not only
present academia with a systematic view of the current
research progress on the above topics, but it will also
help industry learn from the ideas and apply them to find
actionable knowledge in real-world applications.

The Target Audience
-------------------
The audience of this book will be researchers in the field
of data mining, postgraduate students who are interested
in data mining, and industry data miners. Note that the
audience is not limited to those interested in association
rules because the post-mining of association rules involves
clustering, classification and many other techniques of
data mining, as well as statistics and artificial
intelligence, which are actually beyond association rule
mining itself.

Recommended topics include, but not limited to:
-----------------------------------------------
* Subjective & objective interestingness
* Removing redundancy in association rules
* Summarization and generalization of association rules
* Presentation and visualization of association rules
* Maintenance of association rules
* Post-mining of association rules, e.g., clustering
   association rules
* Class association rules and association classifier
* Quantitative association rules and inter-transaction
   association rules
* New forms/challenges/trends of association rules and
   association mining

Important Dates
---------------
Proposal submission deadline: December 31, 2007
Notification of proposal acceptance: January 31, 2008
Full chapter submission: April 30, 2008
Notification of chapter review: June 30, 2008
Revised chapter submission: July 30, 2008
Final notification of acceptance: August 15, 2008
Camera ready copy submission: September 15, 2008

Submission Procedure
--------------------
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or
before December 31, 2007, a 2-5 page manuscript proposal
clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed
chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by
January 31, 2008 about the status of their proposals and
sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are
expected to be submitted by April 30, 2008. All submitted
chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.
The book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global
