Subject: CMAP Code Camp This Saturday - May 8th, 2010 - Columbia, MD - Registration Closing Soon

CMAP Code Camp Fall 2010 is this Saturday. Can you believe it's here already? If you have not registered, what are you waiting for? We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, May 8th at the Loyola University Maryland Graduate Center in Columbia, MD. Be sure to show up between 8:00am and 8:30am for registration.

If you have not registered, what are you waiting for, go now.  Visit the code camp web site (http://www.cmapcodecamp.org) and click the "Registration" link on the menu.

We will have a free continental style breakfast provided by Red Gate. For lunch, we will have subs and sodas provided by Microsoft and snack items in the afternoon provided by Telerik. There are a number of alternative food options within walking distance, if you desire.

The keynote address at 8:30am includes lots of important information that you won't want to miss. There are over 150 developers registered so far. Coming earlier means getting through the registration process faster and having time to mingle with your peers for a bit before the sessions begin.

This is going to be a great Code Camp with over 25 technical and professional development sessions, free breakfast, free lunch and great professional networking opportunities. The Graduate programs in Computer Science and Software Engineering at Loyola University have provided us with an excellent venue for the code camp. You just don't want to miss this event! In addition, we will be giving away some great prizes made possible by our contributors.

We looking forward to seeing you on Saturday between 8:00 and 8:30 for registration.

Code Camp Swap Table

The purpose of this table is to allow you to bring in items that you no longer have a need for but believe they are useful to someone else.  And also, for those that are interested, to take those items with them.

Here are the guidelines:

Swap Table Giver
  • Items must be usable, no broken items.
  • Items should not be so out-of-date that no one will want them.
  • Items can be technology, books, tech-gear or anything that you find ‘tech’ appropriate.
  • If no one takes your item and you want to take it back, do so before the end of code camp as we will take all items and donate and/or otherwise discard.

Swap Table Taker
  • Take what you would like.

So, between now and Saturday, do a little look around your office, house or tech-lab and see what you’ve been itching to get rid of but just know that it is of use to others.

We hope to see a great response from this and encourage everyone to participate.

Yes, yes, this newsletter is even later than usual.  I'm blaming Mother's Day, even though that sounds vaguely unAmerican. But without further excuses or ado...

Release 3.11 -- Wednesday Night
Silverlight author, MVP, and all around interesting guy, Frank La Vigne, makes Silverlight go Bing! He will show us how to make apps geographically aware, provide directions, get traffic data and more.

Looking Ahead - Release 4.0 (June 9)
We celebrate another birthday in June. Andrew Duthie will cross the mighty Potomac to give us a look at Windows Phone 7 development.  And as usual, our sponsor, Aetea will provide something yummy and memorable to help us commerate another anniversary of RockNUGness.

Speakers
If you are interested in presenting, or are keen on hearing a specific presenter to the group, please let us know.  We're always on the look out for fresh and exciting speakers and topics.

Keeping In Touch
If you want to know what's happening with RockNUG, there are three four easy ways:

Hope to see you all tomorrow night!

FINALLY an announcement on the BaltoMSDN June Meeting!

Continuing with our theme of “Back to Basics”, we step into the realm of working smarter, not harder. One of the major advancements in productivity and usability in the past few years has been jQuery. If you’re new to jQuery and an ASP.NET programmer, your first impression will likely be how easy this is going to make your life. If you’ve used jQuery before and are looking for some more intermediate talk, Jim has promised to include a number of real-world plug-in examples that will have you thinking, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Also, you spoke, we heard you. While System Source has been gracious every month in having us host our meetings, there have been grumblings as to:

  • the lack of other food options (what, free pizza is not good enough?!)
  • the location (a lot of folks work in Baltimore City or along the I-95 corridor, and a lot of our speakers come from the Central Maryland area)
  • the lack of more potent beverages (after a long day of putting out fires, explaining to users they can’t press F1 to Continue if no keyboard is installed, and trying to understand how every project is first priority, an adult beverage is definitely warranted)

So we’re going to try a little something new. We’ve moved our monthly meeting date to Tuesday, and we’ve moved the location to Red Brick Station in White Marsh, MD. Red Brick has graciously allowed us to utilize their banquet room. They provide a full menu, and are accessible to both I-95 and I-695. And for those of you who don’t know, on Tuesday nights, Red Brick Station offers $1 craft-brewed beers. That’s right -- $1. You can’t even get shareware nowadays for $1.

A couple of notes:

  • Use the private door to the banquet room from the avenue just to the left of the Verizon store to enter. Do not go through the dining room. There will be signs with the BaltoMSDN logo indicating where to enter.
  • Doors open at 6 p.m. and the presentation will begin at 6:30, but you may want to arrive early to secure a parking spot.
  • You will be responsible for the cost of your meal. Red Brick is very affordable, especially with $1 beers. That being said, be sure to tip generously, as we’ll want to be invited back, and we don’t want to get a group reputation for being cheap.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Next Meeting

Date : Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Time: 6:30 – 9 p.m.

Speaker : Jim Brooks

Topic:  Using  jQuery  With ASP.NET

Are you using hand coded JavaScript to embellish your ASP.NET sites? Is it a pain?  Learn how to take advantage of jQuery in your applications. In this session we will look at some the reasons that JQuery is simpler and cleaner to use than straight JavaScript.  Using lots of examples we will show the power of selectors to isolate groups of document elements, and then manipulate those elements with jQuery’s set methods in a  browser independent way. We will also look at how to hook up and handle events easily.

One of the huge advantages of jQuery is its simple extensibility model that has led to an explosion of plug-ins available. We will look at using a few common plug-ins before creating our own plug-in from scratch.

If you missed Jim’s talk at CMAP's CodeCamp, here is your second chance to see it. But if you were at that talk, never fear, there will be lots of additional pug-ins and examples that there wasn’t time enough to cover in that session.

Bio:

Jim is a Senior Developer and Technical Lead for Northrop Grumman in Linthicum Md. He has developed and maintained Engineering Data Systems in C++ and C# for over 17 years.  Jim is the Special Interest Group coordinator for CMAP’s  Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) special interest group.

We need some help adding location information to our planning system for AID programs - see below for the mix of technologies. We'll be doing all the design and implementation working with users in D.C, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Very little bureaucracy for the government - a good position for a talented developer who wants to make software and see it put to good use. Like many in our office, you'll be working through a contractor that people seem to be happy with.

HR Description:

Software Development / Knowledge Management

This position is part of a small team developing a mission management and reporting system for the US Agency for International Development in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The candidate will work on some or all of the system components: a dimensionally designed database running on MS SQL Server 2008; an application server exposing WCF web services, a data entry web application in ASP.Net, a Windows Forms thick client, and Google Earth for mapping. A particular focus will be enhancing geospatial features that reside on each of these components: incorporating geospatial data into the database, building user tools to query it, and GIS and graphical components  (in addition to Earth) to render it. Downtown D.C with some telecommuting possible. Willingness to travel to Afghanistan or Pakistan not required.  Ability to obtain a secret clearance.
Principles only.

Skills:
Strong dot net /C# programming skills above all else
Geospatial tools such as SQL Server Geospatial, KML or ArcView preferred
Web applications in a Microsoft environment: ASP.Net or ASP.Net MVC
Windows Forms and WPF/Silverlight a plus
ASP.Net webservices and WCF a plus
Good database design and SQL skills
Experience integrating data from multiple sources
Familiarity with dimensional database concepts a plus
Team Foundation Server a plus.

Topic: Real World Entity Framework

Most applications connect to a database at some point and ORM tools, like Entity Framework, can make that process a lot simpler. Whether you have worked with the Entity Framework before, sometimes it takes real world examples to make it all click. In this session we will look at a few real world examples using Entity Framework with technologies like ASP.Net MVC, Silverlight and WCF. We will look at some of the common issues when building applications with any ORM solution and how the new features in Entity Framework 4 help reduce development time and frustration. Most importantly, you will get to see how Entity Framework can be utilized in real applications along with some tips, tricks and gotchas.

Presenter: Dane Morgridge

Dane Morgridge has been a developer for 9+ years and has worked with .Net and C# since the first public beta. Hands-On TDD
Thursday, July 8, 2010, 7:00 - 9:00 PM
Arlington, VA

All,

Want a chance to actually pair program? An opportunity to use
test-driven development? Come to Arlington, VA this Thursday, July 8!

We'll start with a brief introductory talk, then move on the main
event: actually pairing with each other and doing TDD on some simple
programming tasks.* After each half-hour coding session, we'll hold a
brief retrospective to nail down what we've learned.

In our first session, we'll be coding in Java or Python, depending on
your preference. If you know C#, Java is a cinch; if you know
neither, Python is extremely easy to learn -- especially with a pair
who already knows it. (Hey, that's how I learned Python.)

The intro talk is at 7:00, but you can show up as early as 6:30.
There's plenty of parking.

(* We can do the Bowling Game, but only if you want it.)

When: Tuesday, July 6th 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Where: HCC Business Training Center, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, MD, 21046

His current passions are Entity Framework, WPF, WCF, Silverlight and LINQ and is currently a Microsoft MVP for Data Platform Development. MvcConf is a virtual conference focused on one thing. Writing awesome applications on top of the ASP.Net MVC framework. The event will be free to attend, and your brain will explode from taking in so much hard core technical sessions. Sounds fun eh?

This is a community event and we want the best and brightest sharing what they know.

We intend to record each session and make them available online for viewing. We intend to make the videos available free of charge, depending on conference sponsorships.

Part of pulling off a conference like this requires some tools being created to tie together 3rd party services. We will release all of the tools that we create to run this conference under a OSI Open Source License. We want to give back to the community and hopefully inspire more groups to do similar events.

This month, we have Troy Goode to give a talk on ASP.NET MVC View Engines.

RSVP Here:
http://www.eventbrite.com/event/768156577

Details below:

Session:
View Engines: Razor, Spark, & NHAML

Overview:

You may be asking yourself, "Self, what is a view engine and why would I want
one?" A view engine is a library that takes an HTML-like template, converts that
template into code, and then executes that code to get HTML for return to the
browser. If you're using ASP.Net MVC, you're already using a view engine whether
you know it or not: the WebForms view engine.

In this presentation you'll learn how to install and configure alternatives to
the standard WebForms view engine in ASP.Net MVC, and you'll walk away knowing
how to utilize them to improve your productivity. The view engines we'll cover
are:

* Razor, the new view engine from Microsoft.
* Spark, a popular OSS alternative.
* NHAML, another OSS alternative straight from Ruby-land.

About Our Speaker:

Troy Goode is a lead developer with NRECA in Arlington, VA. Previously he worked
as a consultant for the World Bank, National Academy of Engineering, the
Institute of Medicine, and other agencies & associations in the DC area. He
lives in Arlington with his wife and two dogs.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for coming out to my presentation on Asp.Net MVC View Engines tonight. I hope you all learned a bit and are ready to ditch the WebForms view engine. :-)

I have updated the code I showed you tonight with some more in-depth examples of using RenderPartial, various features of Spark, and using Spark as a general-purpose templating engine (such as for HTML emails). You can check that code out here (please note that the solution requires VS2010 and MVC 3 Preview 1 which you can read about and download here):

Also, here are links to the various View Engines I showed tonight (except WebForms):
There are many other view engines kicking around in various states of use/upkeep. Here is a mostly-complete list:

Topic: Curing the asynchronous blues with the Reactive Extensions for .NET

In today's world, we want to create applications both rich in data and in behavior. The problem has been in the past that asynchronous and event based programming has been difficult, especially in the coordination between events and error handling. Come learn how the Reactive Extensions ("Rx") framework takes care of the difficult parts of asynchronous programming by viewing asynchronous computations as push-based collections. Instead of focusing on the hard parts, developers now can start dreaming about the endless possibilities of orchestrating and synchronizing computations at a high-level of abstraction. In this session we cover the design philosophy of the Reactive Extensions for .NET, rooted on the deep duality between the well-known iterator and the observer design patterns. From this core understanding, we start looking at various combinators and operators defined over observable collections, as provided by Rx, driving concepts home by a few samples showing rich applications that coordinate both external data and events in new and interesting ways. Democratizing asynchronous programming starts today.
