When: Tuesday, November 2nd 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Where: HCC Business Training Center, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, MD, 21046

Topic: Goodbye Entity Framework 1, Hello Entity Framework 4!

The 1.0 release of the Entity Framework was not a resounding success -- developers found themselves fighting the framework. Thankfully, Entity Framework 4 enables you to work how YOU want to work. Database-first, Model-first, or Code-First -- you decide. Self-tracking entities, POCO entities, custom entities -- you decide. Auto-generated SQL or stored procedures -- you decide. With a slew of new features EF4 will allow you to quickly achieve a high level of productivity. This demo-heavy presentation will cover the new features of Entity Framework 4 with a focus on features that will enhance the quality of your code!

Presenter: Steve Michelotti

Steve Michelotti is a Microsoft ASP.NET MVP and an Architect/Developer for Applied Information Sciences (AIS). He has consulted at Advertising.com/AOL where he was the Tech Lead for one of the highest volume .NET applications in the world. He previously was the Chief Technologist at e.magination. Steve is a frequent presenter at developer user groups and Code Camps along the East Coast and holds the MCSD, MCPD, and MCT certifications. Steve has been on Microsoft Channel9 and his published articles include Visual Studio Magazine and his blog: www.geekswithblogs.net/michelotti.

Subject: CMAP Code Camp This Saturday - Nov 6th - Columbia, MD - Registration Closing Soon

CMAP Code Camp Fall 2010 is this Saturday. Can you believe it's here already? If you have not registered, what are you waiting for? We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, November 6th at the Loyola University Maryland Graduate Center in Columbia, MD. Be sure to show up between 8:00am and 8:30am for registration.

If you have not registered, what are you waiting for, go now.  Visit the code camp web site (http://www.cmapcodecamp.org) and click the "Registration" link on the menu.

We will have a free continental style breakfast provided by ComponentArt. For lunch, we will have subs and sodas provided by Microsoft and snack items in the afternoon provided by AIS. There are a number of alternative food options within walking distance, if you desire.

The keynote address at 8:30am includes lots of important information that you won't want to miss. There are over 150 developers registered so far. Coming earlier means getting through the registration process faster and having time to mingle with your peers for a bit before the sessions begin.

This is going to be a great Code Camp with over 25 technical and professional development sessions, free breakfast, free lunch and great professional networking opportunities. The Graduate programs in Computer Science and Software Engineering at Loyola University have provided us with an excellent venue for the code camp. You just don't want to miss this event! In addition, we will be giving away some great prizes made possible by our contributors.

We looking forward to seeing you on Saturday between 8:00 and 8:30 for registration.

Code Camp Swap Table

The purpose of this table is to allow you to bring in items that you no longer have a need for but believe they are useful to someone else.  And also, for those that are interested, to take those items with them.

Here are the guidelines:

Swap Table Giver

  • Items must be usable, no broken items.
  • Items should not be so out-of-date that no one will want them.
  • Items can be technology, books, tech-gear or anything that you find ‘tech’ appropriate.
  • If no one takes your item and you want to take it back, do so before the end of code camp as we will take all items and donate and/or otherwise discard.

Swap Table Taker

  • Take what you would like.

So, between now and Saturday, do a little look around your office, house or tech-lab and see what you’ve been itching to get rid of but just know that it is of use to others.

We hope to see a great response from this and encourage everyone to participate.

CMAP Code Camp Fall 2010 Schedule

We are planning to have an old school style user's group meeting in that there will be no speaker/presenter but just a bunch of folks with a mutual interest getting together to talk about technology.  In this case the technology is Windows Phone 7 development.  So if you are doing any WP7 development or wish you were please come next Wednesday to the ETC on Boston Street in downtown Baltimore at 7pm.

There is plenty of free parking in the shopping center there and on the street.

> Description:
> Domain Driven Design (DDD) is a pattern language developed by Eric Evans for
effectively managing complexity in software solutions. DDD has evolved as an
approach for conceptualizing your project's problem-space but as software
developers we are also keenly interested in translating those DDD patterns to
code. If you have always wanted to know how to get started with using DDD in
your projects then this is the talk for you -- offering both an intro to DDD
concepts as well as a look at NET implementations of DDD concepts.
>
> In this talk we will first begin with a brief introduction to DDD concepts and
principles for those new to this overall approach and then explore various
implementation patterns to translate DDD concepts into .NET code. We will
investigate implementations for Repositories, Specifications, Entities, Value
Objects, Services, and other DDD constructs. We will also discuss some
considerations for how to structure your projects and solutions to maximize
flexibility and manage the evolution of your domain over time. This discussion
will focus less on offering prescriptive guidance and more on helping the
attendee understand some of the potential trade-offs that alternate
implementation approaches can provide.

Does the announcement of so many new technologies make you wonder where the yellow brick road is that will lead you to the Oz of understanding? Well, there's no denying that there's a lot to keep up with these days if you're a web developer. So let Microsoft Developer Evangelist G. Andrew Duthie give you an overview of Microsoft WebMatrix, ASP.NET Web Pages, the new Razor syntax, and IIS Express, and how they fit in with the existing offerings in Microsoft's web stack.

Learn how and when you'd want to leverage these new technologies, and when existing technologies may be a better choice. Expect discussion and demo, and bring your questions, so we can make this an interactive and dynamic session!

Presenter: G. Andrew Duthie

G. Andrew Duthie, aka .net DEvHammer, is the Developer Evangelist for Microsoft's Mid-Atlantic States district, where he provides support and education for developers working with the .net development platform. The next meeting of DC ALT.NET will be on 12/14 where we will host Greg Young
(via LiveMeeting) to talk about CQRS and DDD in general. This is a follow-up
talk to last month's great talk from Stephen Bohlen.

RSVP Here and Details Below:
http://www.eventbrite.com/event/1108305973

Session: Unleash Your Domain
Our application runs over 10,000 sustained transactions per second with a rich
model. The key? Modeling state transitions explicitly. In today's world many
systems have non–functional requirements that prevent them from being single
database centric. This presentation looks at how Domain Driven Design can fit
into such environments including extremely large scale web sites, batch
processing, and even using highly scalable backing stores such as CouchDb or
HyperTable. Event streams, a different way of storing the current state of an
object, open many doors in this session not only in how we scale and store our
domain but also in how we rationalize about it.

About our Speaker:
Greg Young is an independent consultant who lives in two suitcases (literally).
When not travelling around working for clients throughout the world you can
often find him on the domain driven design list, blogging at codebetter.com, or
floating upside down in a kayak through rapids.
