Sounds like a great DC FS meeting topic on Feb. 12th. Attendees may want to bring some pass around snacks.
On another note, for those interested in VW stuff, RL NYC area based Tish Shute who operates the UgoTrade.com blog has put up an interesting lengthy post titled "Exploring Reality In Virtual Worlds With Piet Hut." http://www.ugotrade.com/2008/01/15/exploring-reality-in-virtual-worlds-with-piet-hut/ "Astrophysicist Piet Hut (Pema Pera in Second Life) has come into virtual worlds to explore questions about reality. Piet’s interest in reality is the question of what reality really is. His exploration starts with scientific insights and moves into the reaches of contemplative traditions and other ways of knowing to ask: “What else is true?” Piets experiments in virtual worlds began with Videoranch (founded by Michael Nesmith, one of the original Monkees, and his wife), and now Qwaq Forums and Second Life. Piet is planning to write a book with the tentative title “Exploring Reality in Virtual Worlds.” He is a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, but is currently logging in from Kyoto Japan where he is involved in joint research with Japanese astrophysicists."
I have not tried Qwaq but plan to do so soon, as I had a recent meeting with an Austin based entrepreneur (creator of Pocket Realms) that is working on another project which appears to have some similarities to Qwaq. What is interesting is the medium is not so into the Avatar thing, but may offer the ability for more practical application than some of the large client, resource intensive VW's. Yet, in Tish's post we see that Piet Hut, active with Qwaq and Videoranch appears to have 'discovered' Second Life and wishes to explore how the differing environments might inter-operate, or perhaps enhance each instance.
Okay, and there IS a thread to DC FS here too, if you scroll down the main http://ugotrade.com page our illustrious DC FS host Ben Goertzel weighs in (and we see his AV).

Artificial Intelligence Applications in 3D Virtual Worlds
While the development of distributed artificial intelligence in virtual worlds is certainly going to spawn a variety of killer apps one day soon, it is still early days for this. At the Virtual Worlds Conference and Expo, 2007 in San Jose, Ben Goertzel’s startup company Novamente LLCannounced their collaboration with Electric Sheep Company to bring artificial intelligence agents (virtual pets) to online virtual worlds (see BBC News Coverage). Harnessing the wisdom of crowds in the rapid prototyping environment of a user generated, 3D world like Second Life presents an extraordinary opportunity for the development of Artificial Intelligence applications (see my post here on Artificial General Intelligence in Second Life).
The development of OpenSim and creating interoperability between OpenSim and Second Life in 2008 will create many new opportunities to create artificial intelligence applications in virtual worlds that require a secure and public platform. Already use cases and prototypes for energy management, predictive maintenance, building automation and network operation centers that are being designed to be integrated with AI are being developed on OpenSim (see my post on Eolus One’s work on building automation and Illuminous Beltran’s Virtual Network Operations Center). In the picture above Illuminous Beltran (Michael Osias, IBM) is discussing with Zarathustrapoalypse (Ben Goertzel of Novamente) the possibility of having a virtual Artificial Intelligence system administration operation center that could diagnose problems and be able to describe them in an abstracted, qualitative format and then having conversational AI avatars to describe the problems to sys-administrators (and indicate them gesturally in the 3D sim world).
As Ben Goertzel of Novamente also has considerable experience applying AI to financial trading and understands both the data and the psychology of traders pretty well I asked what he thought of the Wrlds project, and how it could be developed with AI. Ben came up with a very interesting, off the cuff, AI tie in.
There is an AI tie-in, since AI can be used to analyze and extrapolate data, and their stuff could then be used to visualize the results…
But that would be a different sort of product, I would say… and a great one … imagine a data-analysis toolkit whose interface was part of a virtual world…
You view your data in the virtual world, a la the wrlds.com methods
You choose methods to analyze your data, via a metaphor of choosing physical tools in the virtual world…
You apply the tools to the data and visualize the results
I note the “toolkit” metaphor is constantly used in the data-analysis world…
Finance would indeed be the first market to look at here, since there is a big and mature market existing for financial data analysis tools…

Thanks for asking!
I'm thinking to do a salon in February, but am exploring a couple
speaker/discussion-leader options, so I'll put off proposing a date
till I verify if one of these speakers is game...

How was the 11/14 Salon? Oracle World was fun. Love their new 11g features; plus got to hear Stevie Nicks, Billy Joel, Angelique Kidjo, and Lenny Kravitz. :)
On the topic below, I heard this German fellow working in Galway give a nice presentation on semantic web, including a clever dissemination trick.

DISCUSSION TOPIC: AI and the Semantic Web
DETAILS:
If the Semantic Web existed -- if Web pages were marked
up with formal information describing their content in an
unambiguous form -- this would have several consequences...
1) the Web would become vastly easier to use, due to
the emergence of a variety of software tools utilizing
this markup
2) we'd be able to use simple AI tools to automate a lot
of tasks we do online everyday
3) AI's would be able to learn from the Web a lot more
easily, thus potentially bootstrapping us toward more
powerful AI (assuming appropriate AI architectures, etc.)
But how can we get the Semantic Web to exist? There
seem to be two possibilities...
1) create AI's smart enough to mark up Web pages without
a huge error rate
2) somehow convince humans to mark up the content
they create
I can talk a bit about the challenges involved in 1 and my
approach to overcoming them.
But I'm also very interested in brainstorming on possibility
2, in case we can collaboratively come up with some
new ideas.
Radar Networks is one startup planning to address this
issue with their Twine product, but I can't say much about
it yet as it's not released (I'm on their beta test list, but
haven't gotten product access yet).
Email and AIM finally together. You've gotta check out free AOL Mail!

Weds. Nov. 14th 7:00 pm at Novamente in DC sounds good.
Interesting topic (AI And The Semantic Web).
A blog aggregation site techmeme (http://techmeme.com/) has become popular. The site owner uses a formula that brings in relevant posts, rather than humans selecting them. Famed blogger Robert Scoble (now mostly doing video segments) asserts this enables the system to work on a mostly hands off basis 24/7/365, whereas as he aptly points out, human aggregators have to sleep and tend to other life matters (so not around the clock aggregation, and more work required). The techmeme formula can be and is tweaked, however, it would be interesting to take the concept a step further where it 'learns' through the notion of AI. Of course, then one would have to be concerned about smarties gaming the AI system (which they likely already try and do with the techmeme system, which Scoble also did a lengthy video blog post on), similar to what they try to do with search engines. Maybe Ben can touch on some of this as well.
Also, looks like the DC tech. scene is seeing a bit of rerun ala the late 90's. I see an explosion of tech blogs, and last week a big conference called The New New Internet took place focusing on social media, etc. http://tnni07.thenewnewinternet.com/ I was a heavy participant of what was called The Netpreneur Program (Philanthropist Mario Morino was the driver). Maybe attendees who are immersed in all of this (The New New Internet--love the name) can offer some expansion on what they are seeing regionally.
Hope to see a good turnout, and thanks to Ben and crew for hosting.
Cheers,
Jim

The dcfuture group has been semi-dormant for a while, due to 2 of the organizers moving to the San Fran area, and the remaining organizer (me) being over-busy and failing to recruit any new co-organizers ;-)
However, I'm thinking of trying for another salon meeting on Nov 13 or 14. Does that sound OK to people?

Bruce, sure, the podcast was a nice find, and dovetailed with the info. Ben imparted at our last DCFuture meetup.
Thanks for the UgoTrade blog link, indeed that is an excellent interview of Ben. I would be very interested in more of his thoughts (and perhaps yours?) after him having undertaken recent travel in Asia, and presented at VW's 2007 and Singularity Summit. So maybe at the next DCFuture, he can spend a few minutes on all of this if he likes. Beyond that, my suggestion is shoot for a late Nov. Meeting (or early Dec.), and then perhaps the next at Jan.-Feb. of 2008. I for one do not think there is always a need for a monthly meeting, as we all have busy lives and schedules. That being said, it is nice to meet periodically to learn, network, maintain 'perspective.' So sounds like we need to come up with some topic ideas for the next session, and perhaps a presenter.
Lastly, I found the following blurb by Digital River's Jim Wehmann of interest: "We're seeing more in-community purchasing. Games are out-front in that area. People are buying things from within games and not going to a commerce site. That kind of thing will happen more and more -- the emergence of content and commerce." Digital River reportedly managesonline businesses for more than 40,000 software publishers, consumer technology manufacturers, distributors, online retailers and affiliates, so you have to figure he has access to what is going on like few others. Sure this is commercially aimed, but in theory is just as easily applicable to the non-profit and non-commercial sectors as well (article link- http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/LgcYJJUku9Zt4A/Digital-Rivers-Jim-Wehmann-Building-a-Better-E-Commerce-Site.xhtml ) Cheers, Jim

Might be good to try and do another DC Future meetup in Nov. I would favor perhaps Ben speaking a bit more about his AGI work as pertains to virtual worlds (VW), and perhaps locating a guest speaker on a VW, social networking, mapping type topic. If any ideas, please put them out on this list.
An interesting article: "America's Techiest Cities: Silicon Valley No. 1, But Who's No. 2?
An outstanding meeting.
Thanks for taking time to discuss AGI and your work in virtual world's (an
area I continue to be interested in).
For those interested in more 'Ben Speak' I ran across a May 3, 2007 podcast
where Ben pontificates on AGI and life in general. Runtime is 1 hr. 11
mins. 16 secs.

Due to this list seeming to be harvested, I will send my contact info. to
Ben's direct e-mail, and advise others to do the same. Perhaps Ben can then
distribute it directly to attendees vs. through the yahoogroups general
list(an idea at least).
Cheers,
Jim

Hi,
As we discussed at the Future Salon tonight, it would be nice to
compile a (name, email address) database of everyone who attended ...
but I sloppily forgot to distribute a piece of paper with that purpose
in mind.
So, it would be great if everyone who attended tonight would send me
an email with your name and contact information. (Mark Waser, Alan
Grimes, Moshe Looks and Izabela Goertzel do not need to, as I already
know you and have the info ;-)
I will then compile the information into a list and email it to all
the attendees...
Thanks -- and thanks for showing up, it was a nice evening's
discussion ;-)

I will be out of town the first two Wednesdays in October, so I'm thinking of doing the next Future Salon on Wed. October 17, at 7PM in the same location as today's (the Novamente / Electric Sheep / Common Cause office).
If anyone would like to volunteer to lead discussion on some particular, futurist topic, please email me privately (ben@...) and let's discuss...
Thanks
Ben
P.s. tonight's salon meeting was quite successful, with attendance in the 10-15 range ... and a bunch of new faces ... giving me some faith that the rebirth of the DC Future Salon may indeed be at hand!!!

Hi all,
Just a reminder that there is a FutureSalon meeting scheduled for
next Wednesday at 7PM, in the Dupont Circle office suite where
Novamente LLC is located.
Topics of discussion will be drawn from:
-- how to re-energize/revive the DC FutureSalon
-- AI in Virtual Worlds (I'll be giving a talk on this at the
Singularity Summit the following weekend, so it will be fun to
trot some of the ideas out for y'all)
-- Pluses and minuses of open-sourcing AGI software (e.g. AGI
safety issues as well as logistical development issues)
-- Ben Goertzel

The DC transhumanists meet quarterly at 7:00 PM at the Hamburger Hamlet
in Crystal City on the first Thursday of the month (Mar, Jun, Sept, Dec).
re discussion at meeting: I didn't mean to suggest going back to neural
simulations, I meant try to identify the neural circuits that
effectively act as op amps, comparators, registers, data converters,
filters, etc, and then emulate those. =)

I'll be in San Diego, sad to say. Especially considering how mouth-watering the discussion looks to be! If you create any visual aids, please consider making them available to those of us who can't make the meeting. That is cool that you'll be presenting at the Singularity Summit!
I'd commit to finding one speaker every quarter...so, if two other people would do the same, we could cover a monthly schedule of events. I'd be assuming we could continue to meet at Novamente. I'd be hoping we could settle on something simple like always the 2nd Wednesday or the like.
Thanks!

I believe I have fixed the Spam problem on this list ... my apologies for not attending to it sooner...
I have changed the settings on the Yahoo Groups page so that it is now a moderated list:
messages must be approved by me before being sent to the list.
