Dear Deadwooders,
I'd appreciate any tips on distinguishing class 3-5 Lodgepole Pine( _Pinus contorta var. latifolia_) from Interior Spruce (_Picea englemanniiXglauca_). That is, once the bark is gone, how might one tell the difference? Low trunk taper and an absence of low branches are somewhat characteristic of pine but there are many exceptions. Does anyone have more specific and applicable criteria (branch orientation/shape, grain etc.)?
While I am at it, is anyone familiar with unique features Class 3-5 Douglas fir(_Pseudotsuga menziesii_) and Sub-alpine fir (_Abies lasiocarpa_)?
thanks
