Re: [dead_wood] University of Northern BC Professional Report

Dear deadwooders

I'm working in Tasmania, and like David Berg am also interested in assessing the
impacts of different forms of logging/silviculture on CWD and its biodiversity.
Research on CWD biodiversity in relation to forest management is a key part of
my job.

I'm also preparing a literature review at the moment - first draft due in a
couple of weeks. Mine's in the context of assessing the likely impacts of a
proposal to use logging "waste" to fuel a timber processing plant
(co-generation). I'm interested in any landscape-level issues the proposal
would raise, as well as coupe-level ones. While my review is focussed on this
part of the world, I would be interested to hear of any studies in other regions
too: in some ways, Tasmanian wet eucalypt forests and forestry are the
Australian counterparts of those in the Pacific North-West. Silviculture in
these forests generally involves clearfelling followed by burning the coupe to
create a seedbed for the next crop - or variations on that theme.

I would like to suggest that any replies for David Berg are also sent to this
list, or to me.

Thanks

Simon Grove

Hello!

I am a fourth year forestry student from the University of Northern
British Columbia who is preparing to do a professional report
(Literature Review) as part of my graduation requirements. I am very
interested in looking at how various logging techniques affect the
amount of CWD that remains on the ground, and what impacts that has
on the amphibians of that area. I am hoping to focus on the CWH or
CDF biogeoclimatic zones.

Currently I am in the preliminary stages of this report (JUST
STARTED!), so any suggestions or direction from the DEAD WOOD ECOLOGY
& MANAGEMENT DISCUSSION GROUP would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your time!
David Berg
