Re: [dead_wood] Forest fire vs. existing CWD

Seppo and others

We are interested in this issue here in the wet sclerophyll forests of Tasmania,
which are almost a southern hemisphere equivalent of the boreal forests. In
studies here by Alen Slijepcevic (Alen.Slijepcevic@...), 52-63%
of the total weight of organic material (equivalent to 145-227 tonnes carbon per
ha) was lost to burning in a controlled burn following clearfelling, mostly from
CWD greater than 7 cm dia. The amount depended on the intensity of the burn.
Unfortunately we don't have figures from a wildfire situation.

See:

Slijepcevic. 2001. Loss of carbon during controlled regeneration burns in
Eucalyptus obliqua forest. Presented at Australasian Bushfire Conference,
Christchurch (Proceedings published 2001)

Slijepcevic, Marsden-Smedley J. 2001. Fuel characteristics and low intensity
burning in Eucalyptus obliqua wet forest at the Warra LTER site. Presented at
Australasian Bushfire Conference, Christchurch (Proceedings published 2001)

and a forthcoming paper in Tasforests (2002) (in press).

I hope this helps

Forest fire consumes a part of existing CWD. But what is the
amount? I am especially interested the situation in natural boreal
forests, but references from other vegetation zones are equally
appropriated. I have not yet find any relevant reference.

Thanks,

Seppo Rouvinen
