Dear all
Just to let you know that we're trying our best to promote interest in dead wood
and its biodiversity here in Tasmania. There's still time here to avoid the
extinctions of saproxylic species seen in Europe, but current awareness is low.
Since it's National Science Week in Australia, we've taken the opportunity to
take some groups of schoolkids and teachers out to the forest to help with our
research (line intersect sampling for coarse woody debris, and surveys for
threatened stag beetles). We also did some interviews for radio and the
newspaper. And on Sunday we ran a field trip for the public to explore the
wonders of dead wood. You can read about what we planned at
http://www.scienceweek-tas.org/Media/deadwood.htm and
http://www.scienceweek-tas.org/Events/DeadWood.htm . Next week we hope to
release a report: Grove, S.J., Meggs, J., & Goodwin, A. (2002). A review of
biodiversity conservation issues relating to coarse woody debris management in
the wet eucalypt production forests of Tasmania. Forestry Tasmania, Hobart.
Just keeping you all informed...I'm happy to write more about what we're up to
here if anyone is interested.
Regards
Simon Grove
