Jim,

I am running DeepSky on a Vista Laptop and the install and operation of the
software are excellent. When you load the CD or DVD right click and select
"Properties" of the .exe file and select "compatibility mode", Windows XP2,
and check the box "Run as Administrator". Now launch the .exe file and all
should be well and good.

Also, make sure you have updated all of your drivers(i.e. graphics card, video.
etc..) You will have to get each of them from the respective vendor and have all
of the service packs installed for Vista.

Good luck, clear skies and let me know how it goes.

Yes, I have tested it for a while on Vista, and it works fine. Be sure
to update ALL drivers and firmware for your computer prior to
installing, and it should work just fine.

I have the Astrocard edition, but since Astrocard is an add-on I would
think that DS itself should work.

I have the AstroCard Edition [CD Rom] and, although it DOES install properly on
my XP computers, I have NOT been able to install it on my new computer that runs
the "$##$&^%$#&&" Vista OS. I think I am following the Vista installation
instructions but, apparently, am not holding my rabbits foot or lucky coin
properly!

I am running DeepSky with AstroCards in a Windows Vista Ultimate
64-bit computer. If it run on 64-bit, it will run on the other
version since the 64-bit version is the most persnickety regarding
compatibility. Assuming you ran the installation program as
administrator, to get it to run you must change the properties of the
deespky.exe (not the shortcut that is created) file to Run as
Administrator. You only have to do this one time. It will remember.
This worked on my computer. Every aspect of the program runs as it
would on an XP machine. Hope this helps.

Another step I forgot in my last post. I created a new shortcut from
the Deepsky.exe file and replaced the one created during install. The
eliminated the annoying "do you really want to..." popup.

I'm obviously missing something. I never
even get anything that I can identify as
"deepsky.exe." Perhaps I'm still so stuck
in "XP" that I'm getting "deepsky.exe" and
don't recognize it. I feel incompetent and
even a little stupid! I'm beginning to think
Vista is comparable to the last Ford I ever
bought, or ever will buy, a 1953 piece of
junk!

first open Explorer. then Tools, Folder Options, View and scroll down.
Unclick "Hide extensions for known file types"

Then click "Apply to All Folders"

You should now be able to see the exe

I have no idea why windows defaults to not showing extensions.

Tom,

Just put the CD in the drive and when it prompts you to install cancel it. Now,
go to "My Computer", there you should see a list of drives you have on your
computer and the Deepsky CD should be listed as well. Right click in the icon
and select "Explore", fine the installer file and right click on it and select
"Properties". Next you should have a dialog box with several tabs and one of
them should be "Compatibilty", click it. You will see a pull down menu for
"Compatibility modes" select Windows XP2. Also at the bottom of the dialog box
you need to put a check in the "Run as Administrator" box. Once this is done
close the dialog box and double click the installer and follow the prompts. All
should go well.

Thank you both for your help. I have followed your

I'm running DS on Vista Home Premium with NO problems whatsoever. Didn't
have to check "compatibility" either. One thing that's the downfall of many
users is in fact drivers and especially video drivers. You wouldn't think a
problem with video drivers could affect so many programs the way it does,
but it does. First step with Vista? Be sure the video drivers are updated.

I've started work on the next version of Deepsky and would like to
invite you to send me requests of features you would like to see and
any bugs you may have found in the software. I still have a list of
things people have emailed me over the past year and I will take a look
at those ideas. I havent decided on any release date yet but there
will be a period of beta testing preceding the release. I will email
you more when the testing is ready.

I am working on a horizon filter for use in the next version of
Deepsky. It will essentially let you specify areas around your horizon
that are blocked by trees and other objects. This will enable objects
that fall behind those areas to be filtered out of any lists in
Deepsky. You will have the ability to set up multiple horizon filters
so that you can use them at all of your observing sites.

I added a photo of the current screen and would like to get your
feedback on it. Please look over the screen and let me know if it
makes sense. You can view it in the Photos section. Make sure you
click the Large link at the top so you can read all of the text.

Thanks

Steve

Looks like a useful (and cool) addition.

Steve,

I am passing on a message which I just received from Blackie Bolduc and I have
downloaded the programs to which he refers. I'm playing with them and think
that you may wish to do the same. Another very interesting set of astronomy
related tutorials is for the CLEA Project at Gettysburg College and can be
downloaded from the CLEA anonymous ftp: io.cc.gettysburg.edu.

Tom

If you have not already looked at it, you might be interested in
surfing to <http://haydenplanetarium.org/index.php> and downloading
the "Digital Universe".

Oof, Blackie

I've added another cool enhancement to Deepsky called the Thumbnail
Image Viewer. I have a sneak peak in the photo gallery under new
features.

Using this new tool, you can view thumbnails of all images from objects
that are currently shown in your spreadsheet. You can view a larger
image if you click on the thumbnail. By adding this new thumbnail
feature, several of the static image views previously shown on the
Imaging menu have been removed.

From time to time, as I work on Deepsky I will post screenshots prior
to beta testing so that users can comment on whether they like the new
feature. This gives me an opportunity to make changes to your benefit
prior to beta testing.

Make sure when you view the image you use the large link to see it
better.
