Tracy:
Everything is fine. Degus have been having babies for thousands of years.
You have provided them with more than enough. The only addition, I like to
make, at this time, is vitamins in the water, and I make a mix of whole grain
oatmeal with powdered milk.
The type of handling you are talking about, should present, no problem,
whatsoever. That sort of advice is for children and adults with untamed degus
that must be grabbed.
The due date, is a bit iffy, but you are probably right on. Just watch
carefully. She knows what she is doing.
Let us know, when the wonderous event occurs. :-)
Best regards,
Shawn
Does anyone have any experience with breeding degus?
When I purchased them they told me they were both boys but I found out
differently on June 25th. Since I was not planning on breeding them I'm not
prepared but I am very attached to them and want to give the best possible
care to the mother. I know the gestation period is 90 days but I am not
sure if they started breeding before I witnessed them in June. Would they
have mated again if she was already pregnant or is the fact that I saw them
in June and she is getting round now mean I can likely pin the due date down
to around Sept 23rd?
Also should I be supplementing her diet in anyway? I feed the guinea pig
pellets, alfalfa and timothy hay and a small amount of lab blocks and rodent
pellets and a few sunflower seeds for treats. They will not eat carrots or
sweet potatoes.
I have also read that handling the mother can cause a miscarriage. Mine are
use to getting out of their cage everyday and having a run. They come out
of their cage by sitting on my hand and go back into the cage the same way.
Is this OK for the mother and if so should I stop letting her out after a
certain point?
They have a nest box about 15" x 7" x 6" that they never use and she hasn't
started to build a nest. They sleep on the top shelf in their cage. When
she gets closer to her due date will she build a nest of should I provide
her with something?
I hope someone can give me some advise! Thanks in advance.

I just recently had one of my degus die, Now there is only one left I would
like to find
another ASAP. I figure if I can get another one soon this one might not get
so lonely. simon is going to get lonely if any one can help him find a
friend, please help. I live in Edinboro PA that is in North west PA about
fifteen minutes south of erie.

Hello,
when degus can have babies, I mean in what age? My male degu is 10 months old,
so I think he is old enough. But my female degu is only something over 3 months
old. And she seems to be pregnant - her belly is bigger and heavy although she
is much smaller than adult degu (and I've already seen pregnant degu).
So, is it possible that she is pregnant in 3 months of age and isn't she too
young?
Will be babies OK?

see if they work out or not, the first time is 4:00 on Friday and the

the times are not for this week but next week so people have time to

It sounds fine. There are no special mixes for degus in the UK as very
few people keep them as pets. I find that a mixture of guinea pig and
chinchilla pellets suits them well. Degus are pretty greedy little
creatures and will happily eat them all up. My chinchillas on the other
hand, are much more fussy.

Raisins definitely not. They have too much sugar in them. The odd peanut
should be ok but only as an occasional treat as they are very fattening. I
give them hay and green alfalfa but not grass. I'm sure it is fine for
them but I don't have a garden as I live in the middle of London. Any
grass around here is sure to be heavily polluted. The same goes for
dandelions and clover. I do give them some green vegetables but they are
not very interested in them.

BTW someone else sent a message to the list on this topic but I deleted it
by mistake. The person asked if I am a vet. I'm afraid I am not. I am
actually a school librarian . Rodents are my hobby. I keep mainly gerbils
(various species) but also have degus, chinchillas and rats.

This is new thing for me, I thought that only sugar could be
dangerous. And I thought that one potatoe should not harm them, but if
you say yes, I won't give them anything like this. Thanks for advice.

What I buy is special mixture for degus. It's not for other gerbils or
chinchillas. It's only for degus. Althought it's not very cheap, I'm
happy that I have this possibility, because it's balanced and there is
e. g. not many sunflowers, as in other mixtures for gerbils.
And tell me please, do you give to your degus raisins? Some nuts? And

and dandelion?

Yes, this happened to us too. We had male and bought female degu, she
was much smaller so he flipped her over. Or when our second female was
pregnant, she flipped the male over.

Sue, It was me who opened up this can of worms. I'm glad you gave your input.
Are you a vet? You seem to know this stuff well. How about Barbara's idea of
feeding grass? How about spinach which they love? I feed mine solely lab
blocks except for some spinach once in a while. I was doing spaghetti and
peanuts as well as the gerbil mix but I pulled the mix a year ago because they
were getting fat on the sunflowers. How long do degus live? My first pair is
now about 5 years old.
Thanks for your assistance

I'm sorry to contradict you again but all of these things are not suitable
for degus. They cannot metabolize carbohydrate and that means starchy
foods such as potatoes, spaghetti, bread as well as sugars. For humans and
most other species, starchy carbohydrates are excellent foods but for degus
they are bad.

Hi Sue,
because my English is not so good, I didn't express exactly what I
wanted. I didn't give to my degus everything what I eat. I attentively
choose what I can give them and what not to give. Because I'm a student,
my meal is either rolls (this they can eat a little I think) or
Spaghetti (not dangerous too) or potatoes with something and nothing
else (you know, student's life :-)). I'm careful about sugar, don't worry.
Also, my meal is not their only feeding at all. I give them special
mixture for degus which I buy at pet store. And also when it doesn't
rain I tear some grass for them - they love it (I don't know if it won't
harm them to eat wet grass, so I rather not tear anything when it rains
- what do you think about it?).
And also they have wheel of course. At the moment they are running
together, big fun. And they are pushing each other out of this because
each of them would like to run alone.
And yesterday I gave them coconut shell. And they argued about it, so I
had to give them two shells. They were sharpening their teeth on it all
night and we couldn't sleep :-)
I'm pleased that you understand my English, best regards

Hi Barbara,
You should not be giving your degu all this carbohydrate. His digestive
system
is not designed to eat it and he will develop diabetes. Degus are
designed to exist on virtually nothing. They eat things like twigs and
grasses in
the wild. I feed my degus pellets (a mixture of chinchilla and guinea
pig
pellets), hay, alfalfa, the occasional green vegetables and nothing else.
I'm afraid you have to be cruel to be kind. With the sort of diet you are
describing, your degu will at best develop cataracts and go blind, at
worst
die. For treats give him a dust bath, some cardboard to chew, some
extra bedding. Give him a wheel to run around on rather than give him
food.
>Sorry for such a long e-mail, you needn't read it if you don't want :-)

I understand you perfecly. Your English is excellent. My Polish is
non-existent but then we English have always been lazy about learning
other languages.

Thank you for your time.

It's a good idea to share our experiences about what do degus like.
A degu eating fresh Spaghetti is great fun. I didn't try to get it
hard as you say, but I'll try it.
We live in a small flat, so we often eat our dinner sitting on a bed
where our two degus are (their cage is opened on the bed and they can
run out if they want). And when they see that we are eating, they
quickly go out and start begging. I found out, that they want to eat
everything if we eat it too. Maybe they want to be like we are :-)
But I know that I can't give them completely everything they want, I
try to give them only things which aren't bad for them. So, they like
for example boiled potatoes. And also they like rolls. I give them
hard dried rolls but if I'm sitting on the bed and eating roll (not
hard, of course :-)) they jump to my shoulder and try to get the roll
out of my mouth (because they see that rolls disappear there). In this
case I give them fresh rolls because otherwise I couldn't feed myself
:-)
Other thing they love is corn-bread. I don't know if it is also sold
in other countries, it's a bit like biscuit, not sweat. Our degus
loved it most of all till the time we gave them chipses. Then, when I
gave them corn-bread, they didn't want it and they seemed to wait for
something better - and when I gave them chipses they were satisfied.
But I think chipses aren't the healthiest thing, so I don't give them
to my degus very often.
And our male degu likes stealing I think. Yesterday he jumped to the
table, where we can't go (and they want it) because there is a lot of
dangerous things, e.g. cables, and started to eat our kohlrabi. So I
gave him kohlrabi to his cage but he stopped to be interested in the
first kohlrabi and jumped to the table again for another kohlrabi.
And he also stole cello candy from the table. And when we had on the
table a bowl full of cherries, he sat into it and started to eat the
cherries in this way - bite to one cherry, throw it away. Bite to
another cherry, throw it away... So when we noticed it, we couldn't
eat cherries anymore :-)
Sorry for such a long e-mail, you needn't read it if you don't want
:-) And sorry for my english, I have no chance to speak very often, so
I forgot almost everything but I hope you'll understand me.
And to the translator who was in Germany in 1987 - it's delectable if
someone knows language of my small country, thank you for this
pleasure.

Just thought I'd liet you in on some feeding ideas that have worked for our
degus. My son, Alex, raises them and sells them to a local pet shop for 10
bucks apiece. Unfortunately they don't put out many babies in the course of a
year.
They love to eat spinach and other deep greens (but not so keen on lettuce).
Spaghetti is great too. Take some after cooking for your own dinner and let
it set out and get hard for 6 or 8 hours and they love to munch on it. Peanuts
are fun for them too. These are very smart rodents and they will let you know
that they want more spinach because once I started feeding it to them they
climb the walls of the cage whenever they see me walking near. Before that
they just ignored me while I was feeding them lab blocks. I'd be interested in
knowing what things you have found them to enjoy. I know they won't eat
anything which has much of any smell at all.
For the young lady in the Czech Republic. Ja mluvim taky trochu Cesky. Byl
jsem u roci 1987 prekladatel v Nemecko.
I think this is normal, my degus make it too. And they also make a lot
of sounds during this. They seem to love it.

Hello all, I need an advice about identifying sex.
I had female and male degu. When my female died, I bought new one. So now I have
one big male (8 months old) and one small female (I think 1-2 months old) - but
I'm not sure if the small is really female.
When I gave them together, my male (who really likes sex I think) was making
lovely sounds on her and sniffing around her parts. And also he was trying to
have sex with her but she didn't want.
They are now 3 weeks together and he doesn't want any sex on her (at least not
so often as in the beginning). Yesterday I was studying my female and she seems
to have her parts too big :-) She looks like male. I know that females have
parts nearer to vent than males, so I tried to compare male and female. But my
male is much bigger, so it was difficult.
So I'll compile it all:
- male was behaving at the beginning to her as she was female, but
now he doesn't want sex on her (almost never).
- her parts look too big to me - like she would be male
Maybe behaving of male is proof of her sex, but maybe not. I don't know, tell me
please. Because people in pet shops often make mistakes. It's not lifely
important, but I'd like to know. I wanted to have small degus, but if she is
male, it won't be possible I think :-)
Thank you all
Barbora

Hi Barbara,
Sorry to hear about your degus problems. I have been very lucky. My
degus have always been friendly and healthy. However, they do seem to get
stressed more easily than my gerbils and jirds.
> First question - HOW YOUR DEGUS SLEEP?
> Our degus often sleep with theis eyes open (but not widely), I don't
> know if it's normal, but they don't see anything, so I think they sleep.
I have seen my degus lying totally still with their eyes open but have
always assumed they were resting rather than sleeping. When they are
deeply asleep, they do have their eyes closed. Also when they intend to
really sleep as opposed to having a little nap, they retreat inside their
nest box so I can't see whether their eyes are open or not.
> And the second question - HOW DO I RECOGNIZE IF MY DEGU HASN'T FLEAS?
> Maybe it's strange question, but it's possible that when we brought

I have never heard of degus having fleas. Fleas are unusual in small
rodents. However, rodents do get infestations with mites. They don't
necessarily have to leave your house to get mites as they can get them from
infested food and bedding, especially hay. If they did have mites, they
would not only be scratching but would have scabby skin and would be losing
their fur. The mites themselves are very small and cannot be seen without
a microscope. As you do not mention that your degus are losing their fur,
I think you are just seeing normal grooming behaviour. My degus spend a lot
of time grooming themselves and each other. By grooming each other they
establish dominance. Do you give your degus a regular dust bath in
chinchilla sand? They really love it and it helps them to get the grease
out of their coats.
I hope this helps,
Cheers.

Hello, I'm new to this list and I have a couple of things which I'd
like to know. So I'll introduce.
Maybe I should say that I'm 21-year-old girl from Czech republic
(middle Europe). One year ago I got my first degu - female. We didn't
know how old she is and she was very frightened from people - so we
think she had bad life before and maybe people wasn't good to her. But
after a time she believed us and wasn't so frightened already. After a
couple of months we bought male. He was completely different - very
quick, lively and wasn't frightened at all.
After three months female born 4 babies, but they died after one day.
We don't know why. And after other 2 months she was pregnant again,
but she got pneumonia, lost her babies and because it was much
together, nothing could help her - she died unfortunately.
Now we bought small new female degu. She has also problem (aren't our
degus misfortuned?) - when we bought her home from pet shop, her leg
was already broken. But I think and hope the leg is healing quickly.
So that's the biography of our degus. I've read all WWW pages about
degus I found, but there are still some things I'd like to know (and
there will be always something). I'm interested in degus very much and
I hope there are some people who are too.
First question - HOW YOUR DEGUS SLEEP?
Our degus often sleep with theis eyes open (but not widely), I don't
know if it's normal, but they don't see anything, so I think they sleep.
And my female degu lies either normally with his belly down or on his
side. And female degu lies on him (they make some "cross"). That's
very very cute.
And the second question - HOW DO I RECOGNIZE IF MY DEGU HASN'T FLEAS?
Maybe it's strange question, but it's possible that when we brought
degu from the pet shop, he already had fleas (at home he couldn't
catch some). Our degus are scratching rather often - with theis back
legs behing ears, or they bite on theis back.
And also they bite themselves in hair and they like it very much - is
it normal or has it other cause (like flea)?
So that's all, I hope you'll understand although my English isn't very
good

are such interesting animals . There are a few problems I am having and
would like to know if they are normal or not. The younger one seems to
like to bite me everytime I put my hand in the cage. I have tried to get
them to stop by putting some hot sauce on my finger, but
it does not to seem to be working . when the sauce is on they ignore it ,
then when it is not on there they bite again. If anyone knows of something

left from about 25!!! So if there are any interests in Germany ;-)
best wishes
Sebastian
Hi there,
My name is Sue. I live in London, UK and I keep a pair of degus called
Adam and Eve. They are extremely noisy little critters and addicted to
their wheel and sand bath. Eve gave birth to 9 baby degus (what do you
call them pups? kits?) at the beginning of March. I have still 5 left so
if there is anyone living near me who is interested in them, please email
me.

While I am always wanting to communicate with other Degu enthusiasts, a chat
room is impossible for me. I am disabled, and cannot keep up.
Thank you for asking, though.
I'm thinking about setting up a degu chat session on my page and am
wondering what would be an acceptable time to chat for everyone? Anby
sugestions. I live in the Eastern Time Zone which is 5 hours behind GMT
if that helps

Yes I would like to hear about it, too. We had some rumors here in Germany
about black and white degus. I couldn't beleave this, because degus are kept
as pets not longer then 15 years here. And were never breed in such high
quantities like gerbils or hamster.
I am also interested in the breeding experiences of the members of this
list. How many degus do you have etc. In the moment there is a breeding
stock with 1 male and 6 females, but there are always around 20-30 degus.
Best wishes,
Sebastian
Has anyone here ever seen varaitions of colors for degus? I would be
really interested in seeing a black or grey degu.
Thanks to all for joining the list, feel free to write to it at any time
Just testing the list
