Emilio,
Even easier to reproduce is to call Scan Selection and the window that appears
is empty. Any click whatsoever there will return this message.
2 things:
* I believe the message is from the underlying application (MS-Access), because
the message is in French (my version of Office Professional 97 SR-1 is in
French)
* To prevent a total crash (Hey, even the screen goes dark, the system really
dies!), get the mouse out of the DVI windows, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, and kill DVI.
The system immediately goes back to normal. You can restart DVI as if nothing
ever happened.
By the way, DVI saves line per line. I have not experienced any loss at all in
my work!
Other matters: I need an answer to my codes problem stated here earlier, as well
as an answer to my other queries.
Best regards,
Julien Boulay

When using Scanning selection or Lookup selection from the source side shortcut
menu, sometimes more than one source sentence is found containing the selected
portion. If one selects the second sentence (lower window), the system reports
the following in a dialog:
"Execution error '94'
"Incorrect use of Null"
Clicking on OK in this dialog freezes the entire system, with no recourse
whatsoever than to physically shutting down the system and turning it on 30
seconds afterwards.
Any comments?

Well, it seems it is just a matter of a weird counter.
For the first 100 rows it calculates the percentage
over 100 rows, for the second 100 rows, it calculates
the percentage over 200 rows (and for the next ...).
And as it happens, the first two documents in my project
are about 100 rows big.
Sorry for the confusion, and Emilio, could you have
a look at this? I don't suppose this is the intended

Roy,
In DVI click on the 'Create project' button and select 'PageMaker tagged
text'. Make sure the files you import into the project have been exported
from PageMaker as 'tagged text'.

When I bought the product, there was no written or on-line documentation, apart
from the on-line help. For the benefit of all, I would like to have (and to
share):
* The entire collection of keyboard shortcuts, divided by module, with a
description for each;
* The detailed explanation for:
- Edit/See in context (most of the time, it's greyed out)
- Tools/Control leading/trailing symbols
- Tools/Copy source to target (whole page)
What size is "whole page"?
- Options/Decimal Conversions
- Options/Case conversions
- Options/Codes visible (what are the benefits and disadvantages
of having them on, and having them off?
- Users Menu (always greyed out)
- Windows Menu (always greyed out)
Other matters:
* Is it necessary for a sub-contractor to have DéjŕVu to work with a satellite
file?
* Can portions of satellites be extracted?
* Can we export only the "Empty lines" in a satellite?
* What is the exact relationship between the work and, more important, what are
the processing priorities between Pretranslate, AutoProcessing and CTRL+A?
* What is the recipe to have codes carried over correctly? In this example (Help
file) we have:
{233}K{234}Printing your work
in the source line. The expression "Printing your work" has an exact match in
the database, and, if shown without the "{233}K{234}" portion, will translate
exactly as "Impression de votre travail" (French). But often (strangely, not
always), we'll get this result in the target file (with the codes):
{233}K{234}Impression de votre travail{234}
This causes us a great deal of wasted time. What am I doing wrong? (or is it a
bug?).
* Have you a projected date for on-line or printed documentation, especially for
registered users?
Thank you for your time in answering my queries.

Well, forget about TermWatch. You don't need it in DVI.
1) Start Options, AutoSearch.
2) Enjoy.
ad 2) Double-clicking or Alt+xx copies a term from Portions found.
The DVI window keeps the focus. (You can also use Ctrl+T to copy
and Ctrl+N/P to move down/up in the list. Sentences found will be
little use in your case.
It is possible to use Ctrl+A to 'assemble' a translation, but I
find that hardly useful.

About three hours ago I started using DV(I). To start with, I had a Word file containing the source text, and a Word file containing a project-related glossary. Therefore, there is no existing translation database, so I have to rely heavily on the glossary provided.
On the basis of the .PDF file and the Help texts, I have inported the source text into the project environment (following the instructions from the .PDF file), and I have converted the .DOC-style glossary into an Excel file, which, in turn, I have imported into a .TDB database.
On the basis of the Help texts, I have started TermWatch and specified the required database. However, pressing CTRL+9 does not result in a search for terms in this database. Whether I select no text at all, or the text in the target "window" or"source "window", pressing CTRL+9 always yields the result that I go back to the same language pair in the translation environment. By the way, this translation pair happens to consist of digits only.
Question: can any of you explain how:
a) from the translation environment, I search for and replace relevant source words/terms;
b) I can "automate" this process for the remainder of the project so that the target component of the pair already contains some translated elements.
With reference to the latter, the glossary contains a number of entries that have multiple, context-related translations. To this end I have restructured the glossary as follows: there is an entry "back light" with "instrumentverlichting" as translation, and there is an entry "back light" with "achtergrondverlichting" as translation. Any clear and effective solutions to this problem will be highly appreciated.
Thanking you in advance, and with kindest regards,

When I try to send just one file (and not the whole project)
to the MDB, DV happily starts with the first file. This is
unexpected, and not what I want. Anyone with the same problem?
Usually, I work with 'all files', and return to one file for
spell checking and then sending the file to the MDB.

Julien,
That's right. As far as exporting the translation is concerned, it doesn't
matter how you modify source text.
In your example, the first cell (in the exported file) would contain the
translation, while the second one would be empty.
Notice also that you can click on the narrow column to the left of the target
column to make it red. Rows marked in this manner won't be sent to the memory
database.

My name is Julien Boulay, a Certified Translator from Canada, and the originator
of this thread.
I am happy to report a working workaround for the Join Sentences/Split Sentences
problem in PowerPoint.
Say we have the expression "Total Sales", where "Total" is on one line, and
"Sales" is on the next line. The French translation is "Ventes totales".
You can't translate "Total" by "Ventes" and go to the next line and translate
"Sales" by "totales".
So, here's what you do.
1) Go to the second line ("Sales"); highlight the line contents, hit Ctrl+X
(Cut)
2) Go to the first line "Total", add a space at the end (if needed) and hit
Ctrl+V (Paste). You have reconstituted the desired expression: "Total Sales".
The next line is empty. Translate your reconstituted expression in the target
field.
3) Don't forget to "Delete codes and text" in the target area of the second
line, if DVI put something there.
Comments, anyone?

Otto,
We are ignoring line breaks entered by pressing Shift+Return, but can't do
anything about paragraph marks (Return), let alone playing with text in
different frames.
Authors should be well behaved and take into account these problems when
designing presentations.

just to add my pebble to the mound, Otto's remarks equally valid for Romance
languages. First thing we learn from our English teachers is that we've got
to learn to speak backwards. Of course that must be exactly the same lesson
taught by French/Spanish teachers in English speaking countries.

Emilio,
even though I found no signature on the mail you reply to I see the point of
its´ author. If you translate from English, French or German to Czech you
have also quite frequently change order of source words. I am aware of the
fact the PowerPoint authors sometimes put individual words in individual
cells on PP slide. If you could solve this problem somehow it would be very
nice.
The only workaround I can imagine now is to translate the inverted cells
"improperly", i.e. if you have Invoice Number and the translation is Cislo
faktury you have to translate Invoice as Cislo and Number as faktury even
though Invoice = faktura and Number = Cislo. However this will spoil you
translation memory, or you have to go the Database Maintenance afterwards
and clean it. Other solution would be to create a special database for PP
slides and leave there such inverted translations as valid ones.
Regards
Otto

eGroups is spam-free, and they do not sell our addresses. I moderate three
mailgroups at eGroups, and there has never been any spam attempt on us.

This is so on purpose. If you were to split or join sentences, the filter
would not be able to export your translate.
Notice also that, when exporting, DV needs to find the original files in
their original locations. This is true for the PP and Trados filters. For
all other filters, the DV contains all the information it needs.

Well, the footer generated by eGroup seems to be the only kind of
trouble they charge us with. And if you use their Web-interface,
you get to see a banner. That's rather acceptable, isn't it?
And they say they hate spam.

Emilio,
A couple of questions about the new system:
1. Do we need to do something to receive individual messages via email?
2. How does one subscribe to the daily digest?
I realize it was a bit annoying to receive some of the messages posted by
non-members, but we should be aware that the eGroups server can (and will?)
sell our personal email addresses to advertisers who are targeting persons
with interests and means similar to ours. If I understand their business,
that's how they earn money by providing what looks like a "free" service.
A conference dedicated to interpreting in the courts (US) decided to use a
similar service provider and a month later we were receiving "personalized"
email advertisements selling everything from stocks to miraculous vitamins.
I must ad that I have no reason to suspect that eGroups will do the same.
I guess we must accept spam as a byproduct of the advantages offered by
this type of communication.
Luis

The Join Sentences and Split Sentences commands are inactive in DVI (v.2.2.34),
when translating PowerPoint 97 files. As I am translating from English to
French, words in expressions are sometimes inverted. This causes me problems.
Solutions, work-arounds, please? Or is it a bug?
