Life was simpler and kids were safer. Where I grew up there never was a
murder, a drive by shooting, a kidnapping, or any such violence. Gangs were
kids playing together. And, we respected our parents and our teachers. My
kids grew up in pretty much the same environment and at age 14 they were
traveling on their own to Europe and New Zealand. They were seasoned
travelers by then. The one big difference that I remember was their
laughing at the dinner table one evening. When asked what was so funny the
answer was "burn outs". They explained that "burn outs" were kids who had
taken so many illicit drugs that they had lost touch with reality. That
particular day the "burn outs" had jumped into a duck pond on campus.
Apparently the kids who did not use drugs viewed this as hilarious. I have
since felt this was a sad, very sad, comment on how our society deals with
these drug users. We just give up on them.

I would hate to be a parent these days. It seems now that kids are protected
from everything. Driven to all activities. Halloween even. We never see kids
walking down the road anymore, either alone or in a group. How did ours ever
survive childhood? Were we negligent in our duties? Mine rode their ponies I
don't know where and went out back and saddled up a horse when the next door
neighbour kid got a bigger one. I did buy safety stirrups, but (I found out
much later), the helmet got winged into the ditch on the way out and put
back on just before returning home. As littler children, they swam in the
red algae horse trough when I was too occupied to drive them to the lake.
They did grow up savvy about the cattle and the stallion and the ram..marion
