DIGITAL PHOTO SIG MEETING IS THIS THURSDAY
As a reminder, we will be discussing the Open Source image editing program the
GIMP, this Thursday at 6:30 at the Maple Heights Branch of the Cuyahoga County
Public Library.
A FREE copy of the program, and other useful plug-ins, will be available for
people who preregister at the website for our group: www.digitalphotosig.org.
Never heard of the GIMP? Not sure you need to know about it? Here's
what reviewers are saying about the program:
This application caught our attention--and hearts--as one of the
most powerful general-purpose image editors around. The
application's features include channels; layers and masks; filters
and effects; tabbed palettes; editable text tools; and color
operations such as levels. The application provides professional
tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price
tag.

The GIMP is sometimes called a free alternative to Photoshop, but
reviews say it is appropriate for both beginners and advanced
users. . .The GIMP is also the only free image editor compatible
with both Windows (98, Me, NT, 2000 and XP) and Mac OS X.

The Windows version of a popular Linux graphics editor and image
manipulation software. It offers a ton of features, including
advanced layer support, masks, filters, effects and many other
features found in professional graphics programs.

I was a bit surprised to see the power behind this editor. It's
adaptable to nearly any task, from simple doodles to in-depth
picture manipulation. You can use it for tasks like photo
retouching, image composition and image authoring, online batch
processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format
converter, etc. . . .
Not only is GIMP a powerful program, but it can also view and edit
many different filetypes. File formats supported include bmp, gif,
jpeg, mng, pcx, pdf, png, ps, psd, svg, tiff, tga, xpm and many
others. It ensures that you can save and later use files with
different layers with other image editing programs.
