The roads are clear and you've got a chance to see photographer Chris
Jordan talk about his work today at Oberlin College.

Chris Jordan's photographs investigate contemporary American culture
through the austere lens of statistics. The themes of environmental
stewardship, mass consumption, waste, public health and social justice
are explored through haunting, large-scale images, which cause the
viewer to directly confront numbers through a visual medium. Each work
portrays a specific quantity of a particular item: 15 million sheets
of office paper (five minutes of paper use), 426,000 cell phones (the
number retired every day), 106,000 aluminum cans (30 second of
consumption).

Date: Wednesday, Mar. 12, 2008, 5:00 pm
The work will be on display from March 11 - June 8, 2008

Location: Allen Memorial Art Museum,
Oberlin College
87 N Main St, Oberlin, OH
(440) 775-8665

Cost: Free

I've been working on setting up a web log where I can present
information about digital photography in a richer way (using graphics,
sound and video.) Please visit the site that I've created:

http://digitalphotosig.blogspot.com/

By using a blog, I can share information more often and answer
questions without having to email members for each and every posting. In
addition, this approach will allow me (and eventually other
members) to answer questions posed by the members. Eventually, the
web address www.digitalphotosig.org will point to the blog rather than

I would welcome your comments. Feel free to email me at

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:

Kolman Rosenberg
"My station in life is to capture the action of life, the life of the
world, its humor, its tragedies, in other words, life as it is. A
true picture unposed and real." W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978)

The camera serves as a portal for me to view common sites in an
uncommon way. It enables me to see, and point out to others, the
beauty, irony, interest, humor and sometimes the ugliness of the
world we live in. I hope my images bring a realization to others
that common things in life are often worth more than a glance, they
draw a second glance.

My interest in photography began as a college newspaper and yearbook
photographer during the stormy 1960s and 1970s. I was influenced by
many of the great photojournalists and documentary photographers such
as W. Eugene Smith, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams,
Margaret Bourke-White and other black and white photographers of Life
Magazine and the earlier Farm Security Administration in its effort
to assist poor farmers during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression.
Though many of these photographers documented the horrors of war and
the plight of poverty, they also showed me the dignity and
adaptability of human beings in their desire to prevail.

My images will provide you with that second glance of the mundane,
humorous, common-place, and sometimes ugly or painful aspects of our
world with the intent of helping you also take the time to notice the
dignity, beauty and adaptability that is evident in each.

Sunday, June 10th at 4 p.m., there will be a jazz history panel
discussion and opening of a photography exhibit at the East Cleveland
Library (14101 Euclid Avenue). The event is free and open to the public.

There is a an article in today's Plain Dealer about the photographer,
Frank Kachirchuk. The print version of the paper has photos of Billie
Holiday, Billy Eckstine, Anita O'Day, and Stan Getz.

Here an excerpt from the article followed by a link to the source:

Last fall, Sandusky Register reporter Tom Jackson was looking to do a
good turn. He saw an ad in the paper from a resident of the Ohio
Veterans Home requesting someone to play jazz albums for him. When
Jackson arrived at the room of retired photographer Frank Kuchirchuk
he was knocked out by what he saw.

"It was like a little jazz museum. He had these big photographs of
these giants of jazz. Then I found out he took them," said Jackson.

"Not only were they rare Cleveland photographs, but it was immediately
obvious that Frank is a very talented photographer," said Jackson.
"These were beautiful, atmospheric pictures. And Frank shot a lot of
them."

The 83-year-old Kuchirchuk told Jackson he was looking for a home for
the collection of photographs taken in the early 1950s at a club
called Lindsay's Sky Bar near East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue.

events. This year I am encouraging everyone to go the parade and
take a camera. If there is sufficient interest, we'll do a show and
tell of photos at a future meeting.

Here is a link to pictures I took last year:
