Fw: Public Review of DITA v1.1   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #5149 of 16521 |

Well, its a few days late announce it here, but the Public Reveiw for the
long-anticipated DITA 1.1 proposal is was announced earlier this week.
Below is the official announcement letter. As Mary McRae of OASIS notes, "
Please feel free to distribute this announcement within your organization
and to other appropriate mail lists." That includes blogs, tech writing
listservs, newletters, or any other way that you wish to reach people whom
you feel would be interesting in looking at this material. The OASIS DITA
team is understandably pleased to have achieved this milestone--we believe
that the quality, cohesiveness, and depth of the specifications is a great
improvement over the 1.0 specs, as useful as those were. Do not be daunted
by the large page count in the language specification: much of that real
estate is due to attribute descriptions, which we've attempted to group
wherever possible to minimize duplication in print. Also, the new bookmap
specialization adds the most overall element pagecount to the Spec, yet
most of those new elements are exposed to writers only within the book
metadata (stuff that only book producers could love, right?) which you can
look past if you want to concentrate on the structure definitions alone.

This announcement makes it possible for early implementors to get started
with fair certainty on supporting some of the new elements in the spec. I
have brought up test documents in existing editors using the new 1.1 DTDs
and Schemas, for example, and know that it will be exciting to support how
authors can interact with the content through the new bookmap model, which
corresponds very nicely with other book-oriented standards. Cool stuff--I
hope you are as excited as I am about these materials now becoming
available for review and exploration!

Regards,
