I have recently brought a Singer portable record player, which uses AC
current or batteries, back from the dead. The last thing I am hoping
to do is eliminate the hum in both channels. I'm guessing (based on
my INCREDIBLE knowledge of electronics....NOT!) that it could be
capacitors, because every seems to note how they go bad. Whatever the
source of the problem, I cannot read a schematic and certainly can't
diagnose it.

So: Here is a photo of the schematic:

And here is a photo of the insides of the unit:

The hum is there even when the volume is all the way down, if that's a
clue.

I would appreciate any help you DIY experts can give me. Many thanks!!

Sounds like a power supply filter cap has gone away. The schematic shows a connection for an external AC adapter, which presumably outputs a DC voltage....

Thanks - I will check that out. I know that while I was working on it I was using the AC adapter. I don't remember whether or not I ran it on batteries....

Sorry about posting the wrong photo for the inside of the record player in question. This is the correct one (I hope...!) ...

LarryO - I put in batteries and you were right no more hum, just a quiet background whooosssh. Unlikely a unit like this gets much more quiet than that! If...

I believe the trouble is in the AC adapter, not the main unit. You may want to try a substitute adapter. Cheers, LarryO...
