Sounds like a power supply filter cap has gone away. The schematic shows a connection for an external AC adapter, which presumably outputs a DC voltage....

Thanks - I will check that out. I know that while I was working on it I was using the AC adapter. I don't remember whether or not I ran it on batteries....
