*** MAIN PRESENTATION ***

"How to stop waiting for build/deploy and enjoy coding again"
David Booth

25 percent of developers say that their JEE projects take
over two minutes to deploy, every time they want to see their
changes. Since on average we deploy five times an hour,
we are watching the logs roll by, or switching to email and
losing focus, for more than an hour every day.

In this talk, David Booth will highlight three key techniques
that you can start using immediately to drop the time from
hitting Ctrl+S to refresh your browser down to less than one
second. We will start by discussing exploded development and
some shortcuts you can take to eliminate the build scripts
from your everyday life. Then we will review some ways to
bypass or speed up redeployment. We will take a look at JEE
redeployment, OSGi modules, special framework support that
exists in Grails, Seam, Tapestry5 and RIFE, and JVM HotSwap.
We will cover what you can do for free, and introduce a class
reloading JVM plug-in called "JavaRebel", that solves the
problem for peanuts.

After this talk, you will leave with a clear idea of at
least three ways to reduce your turnaround, and measurably
save your team at least an hour per day.

Please note, the original speaker, Jevgeni Kabanov is ill,
and David Booth was kind enough to fill in for us at the
last minute.

Description:

Java has open source libraries that do everything from
formatting HTML to making fries, but there are very few
choices when it comes to inter-process communications (IPC).
This talk introduces a new open source library called CLIPC
and also goes over the fundamentals of IPC with an eye
towards the Java environment.

Hey All,

Don't forget that the Denver/Boulder Groovy Code Camp
<http://www.groovycodecamp.com/
  > will be here before you know it -- July 28-29.

You've seen Scott Davis (and others) give Groovy demonstrations at the
Denver JUG. You've been reading about Groovy in "Groovy Recipes"
  > and the ongoing "Practically Groovy" series at IBM developerWorks
<http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/views/java/libraryview.jsp?search_by=practica\
lly+groovy:
  >

But how much time have you spent actually programming in Groovy
yourself? The Groovy Code Camp is your chance to build that muscle
memory by hands-on, lab-driven training. Bring your laptop, and we'll
make sure that you have Groovy installed and configured. After that,
it's two intense nights of *you* doing the typing, *you* doing the
learning, and *you* jump-starting your Groovy programming skills in
the quickest, easiest way possible. There is no better way to learn a
new technology than rolling up your sleeves and digging in with an
expert or two hanging around to help out if you get stuck.

I know how hard it is to get time off of work for training from your
company. And taking weekend time away from your family is just as
hard. That's why the Groovy Code Camp is two nights -- Tuesday and
Wednesday, from 6pm - 10pm. It's like the DenverJUG on steroids, only
just a wee bit North. (The Groovy Code Camp is being held on the CU
campus in Boulder, the same place as the regular BJUG meetings.)

At $250, Groovy Code Camp is affordable enough for you to take control
of your knowledge portfolio. In this down economy, you need to ensure
that you have *tomorrow's* technology on your resume, not yesterday's.

Use the discount code "DJUG", and we'll take an additional $50 off.
That's $200 for two nights of hands-on training from recognized
experts in the field, like Scott Davis.

Visit us at GroovyCodeCamp.com for all of the details.

See you there,
Scott Davis

Summary:
Maven is a comprehensive project info and build tool, often referred to as the next generation version of Ant. It introduces the beneficial "Convention over Configuration" mantra to the build-script world, allowing build scripts just 5 lines long to compile .java files, build standardized JARs, and produce a comprehensive project web site with change logs, cross referenced HTML source code, and more.
Maven has been on the Java build tools scene for quite a number of years, but the adoption rate in enterprises is now going through the roof. Maven can seem daunting, but this presentation will equip you with efficient techniques and tools to overcome hurdles and troubleshoot build issues with ease.

We'll examine tools to find artifacts in central repositories, manage your corporation's internal Maven artifacts with a proxy tool such as Nexus, view and override dependency graphs, implement multi-module best practices, create OS specific profiles, and leverage the latest Maven plugins for the top Java IDEs.

Topping it off, we will review migration paths from Ant, and why Maven is a perfect blend with your company's use of the ever growing web of open source libraries.

Topics Covered:
-Using Maven in an Ant world.
-Ant to Maven migration strategies.
-How Maven lowers the lines of build scripts you write.
-Convention over Configuration benefits.
-Achieving library reuse.
-Effective use of Maven in the enterprise.
-Understanding error messages.
-Efficient troubleshooting.

Day One:
-Installation and setup of Maven
-The project object model (POM) and lifecycle
-The Maven directory structure
-Using and creating archetypes
-Maven in IDEs (Eclipse, IntelliJ, NetBeans)
-Multi-module projects for EARs
-Module and directory structure best practices
-SCM integration and manageable component versioning

Day Two:
-Continuous integration with Maven
-Repositories and repository managers
-Automatic website generation
-Debugging plugins and JUnit tests
-Writing Maven plugins
-OS specific build tasks with profiles
-Maven 3.0 overview

Bio:
Matthew McCullough is an energetic 12 year veteran of enterprise software development, open source education, and co-founder of Ambient Ideas, LLC, a Denver consultancy. He is an outspoken advocate for the use of open source libraries in enterprise applications. Matthew currently is a member of the JCP, referenced in the O'Reilly Maven book, author of the DZone Maven RefCard, reviewer for the top technology book publishers, President of the Denver Open Source Users Group, and speaker on the No Fluff Just Stuff 2009 tour.

Tonight (Monday, June 15) at IASA Denver, board member Tim Berglund will be presenting on Agile Database Development with Liquibase (see below for details).

After Tim's presentation we will have an open discussion on the challenges of achieving database agility, then adjourn to the Baker Street Pub at 8:30 for beers. Note: the first round of beers will be covered by IASA Denver!

Email us at events@... to RSVP, or go to www.iasadenver.org.

Thanks again to our awesome founding sponsors Solution Partners and Modis for their support of our monthly chapter events.

Agile Database Development With Liquibase

Your team has built a flexible, expressive, performant database schema for a new appliation that's ready to face the world—but nobody gets it right on launch day. You've got a toolbelt full of methods for managing code change, but if you aren't just as adept at managing changes to your database, it will soon become mummified, cursing your application with declining performance and ugly hacks for the rest of its life.

Or maybe you've been saddled with a legacy database that looks like it was designed by the High School DBA Club on the last day of the semester, then filled with ten years of critical business data. You can't throw it away, but you can't build the next-gen application on it either. With conventional source code control and the right set of refactoring practices, you can build an application you love from a database you'd just as soon do without.

Liquibase is an open-source tool that helps bridge the gap between database schemas and source control. Inspired by Refactoring Databases by Amber and Sadalage, it provides a well-structured and disciplined set of refactorings that can be expressed in a text file and played back repeatably against development, test, and production instances of your database.

Speaker Bio

Tim Berglund runs a software consulting firm called the August Technology Group, which provides training and development services to customers building web applications on the JVM. His technology interests span web applications, business integration, data architecture, agile processes, and software architecture, but his greatest passion is to help developers improve in their craft. He is a frequent speaker at local user groups, and is a board member of IASA Denver and The Denver Open Source User Group (www.denveropensource.org). He loves open-source software and the rapidly diversifying world of the Java platform. He has been writing software since he was a boy, but only started brewing his own beer a few years ago. He lives in Littleton with his wife and three children who, despite being the homeschooled children of a programmer father, don't write as much code as you might think.

A friendly reminder that this coming Monday, June 29, Agile Denver will
meet at the Tivoli near Downtown Denver. Frank Vega and Brad Swanson
will present "What is Kanban?"

At the end of the presentation, we'll be giving away a few books and one
free registration for Mike Cohn's Certified ScrumMaster class at the
landmark Hotel Boulderado in Downtown Boulder on August 4 and 5. Be sure
to drop a business card in the drawing box before the meeting.

What have you heard about kanban in the context of software development?
Could you describe it to someone else? Is it an agile methodology?
Is it a lean principle or a lean practice? In this session, Frank Vega
and Brad Swanson share some of what theyÂ’ve learned about kanban over
the last year.

Frank was introduced to “kanban” when a co-worker returned from the
Agile 2007 Conference describing “a new thing” he heard about in an Open
Space discussion. After further research, a few phone conversations
with David Anderson, a thought leader in the kanban space, and a couple
of sputtering trials, FrankÂ’s current organization has had one
development team applying kanban since April 2008 and over the last
couple of months a second team is now giving it a try.

Brad has combined lean principles & practices with agile on several
projects and has found that lean & kanban concepts can help a team
better understand and apply agile practices.

Together, theyÂ’ll briefly cover a bit of kanban history, identify a
couple of core tenets, present a few comparisons and contrasts with
Scrum, share one teamÂ’s experience with kanban, and if time permits
share a few of the more interesting “sound bites” they picked up from
attending the Lean and Kanban 2009 Conference (the first) in Miami last
month.

We will also be having a book swap. Bring any books you're willing to
loan, swap or give away - preferably ones related to software, or agile
development in some way.

As always, our monthly meetings are free to attend and open to local
software professionals, students and faculty. Feel free to pass this
announcement along to your colleagues.

"Cappuccino Web Framework"
Johnny Wey

Description

It's 2009 and all the late-1990's hype of the browser as a "rich application platform" is finally starting to materialize. All is not well, however: developing in Javascript is a chore, there are still significant differences between browsers, and creating the rich, desktop experience users are expecting is a difficult task. Enter Cappuccino: a new and exciting RIA framework that helps align the web development experience with that on the desktop and helps create fantastic user interfaces. In this talk, Johnny will explain why Cappuccino matters, what it looks like, how it works, and how to hook it up with your existing Java services.
Speaker

Johnny Wey has been working with computers and software development for money since he wrote his first for-profit C++ program at 14. Since then, he has worked with sorts of frameworks and platforms to solve a myriad of problems. Currently, he works as an engineer in the telecom domain using the latest and greatest tools in the open-source Java world.

What are your plans for Tuesday and Wednesday night of next week? You
could catch up on those Seinfeld reruns, or you could learn a new
technology.

The Groovy Code Camp, Denver/Boulder edition, happens next week, July
28/29, from 6pm to 10pm. This unique hands-on training is taught by
Scott Davis, author of "Groovy Recipes: Greasing the Wheels of Java"
and the "Practically Groovy" article series for IBM developerWorks.

Bring your laptop, and you'll learn how to mix Groovy in with your
existing Java code. You'll use Groovy as a batch/shell script
replacement. Databases, File I/O, XML, Web Services -- all are made
dramatically easier with a bit of Groovy.

Priced at just $200 for two nights of training (after the $50 DJUG
discount code), you won't find instructor-lead training any cheaper.
Come see the technology that Wired.com, LinkedIn.com, Mutual of Omaha,
Taco Bell, Pepsi, Tropicana, and many more are already using in
production.

Visit http://groovycodecamp.com/ to register today, and I'll see you
next week. (You can always Tivo those Seinfeld reruns...)

Dear DJUG,

In addition to frequently darkening the doors of DJUG, I am also on the board of the Denver chapter of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA). IASA is sponsoring an "ITARC" (IT ARchitecture Conference) in New York in October. The IASA Global organization has garnered an impressive lineup of speakers, as listed below. The local chapter doesn't usually promote national ITARCs very aggressively, but this one is exciting enough to us that we wanted to try to make more of our colleagues in the area aware of it. To that end, the chapter is offering sponsorships of $50 per attendee (available to chapter members only). Our chapter President is planning on attending, and I am hoping to make it as well, schedule permitting. If you aren't normally tuned in to IASA happenings, I strongly recommend you take a look at this conference and join us if you can.

Email me if you're interested in joining the chapter or attending the ITARC. Read the forwarded email below for more details.

Warmly,
Tim Berglund
IASA Denver

P.S I'm also posting this to the DOSUG list. I know there's substantial overlap between the two, so please forgive my spamming if you get this twice.

Denver Open Source Users Group - Meeting Announcement
http://www.denveropensource.org/

This month, we have a presentation on practical applications of Scala
for Java users and Grails Testing in the Real World.

The building doors and/or elevators still lock by 6:45 or so, so try
to join us as early as possible.

Meeting Date and Time:
Tuesday, August 4th, 2009, 5:30 p.m.

Agenda:
5:30 p.m. - Member to Member Networking, Pizza, Drinks (courtesy,
TekSystems)
6:00 p.m. - Basic Concepts Presentation
7:00 p.m. - Advanced Concepts Presentation
8:15 p.m. - Networking at Darcy's (courtesy KForce)

Basic Concepts Topic: Introduction to Scala by Tom Flaherty
Whenever a language begins to gain popularity there is a need to
present introductory material. But after a awhile the need shifts to
understanding the strengths of a language.

In this presentation I am going to present a snapshot of Scala's
unique features and paradigms. At start of the talk you will get to
know Scala syntax, closures and functional programming. Next we will
review unique features that Scala provides for DSLs such as ADTs,
parsing and pattern matching. From this point we will study the
improvements Scala makes to OO with strong typing, traits and mixins
and how these improvements provide intrinsic support for new
paradigms. Finally we will review actors and how Scala's capabilities
are finding their way into the real world.

Bio:

Tom Flaherty is Chief Architect at Axiom Architectures. He is
currently authoring papers about Enterprise Architecture and applying
this work to state governments. In 2008 he developed a symbolic math
application in
Scala for Glaxo. In the past he established enterprise and OO
methodologies along with 4-Tier platforms for Williams Communications,
DMR and NorTel. He lives in Centennial with his wife Fifi and Maine
Coon cat Buddy

Main Topic: Test First, Refresh Second: Web App TDD with Grails 1.1 by
Tim Berglund

Not many of us question that TDD is the right way to write software,
but not many of us really practice it either. Even fewer of us do it
when writing a web app, and with good reason: web app code is usually
coupled to a framework, and the framework is usually coupled to a web
server on one end and a database on the other. All this coupling does
not set us up for testing success.

Grails 1.1 introduces several features that make it easy and truly
productive to create a web application while testing first. In this
talk, you'll learn how to use Domain and Controller mocking to write
unit tests that can be run quickly and easily from the IDE or from the
command line. TDD with 100% coverage had always been possible in
Grails, but for the first time the tools make it the kind of thing
you'll want to do. Learn to use the new features of the framework to
build your web app the right way the first time.

Bio:

Tim Berglund runs a software consulting firm called the August
Technology Group, which provides training and development services to
customers building web applications on the JVM and in embedded
devices. With his keen sense of timing, Tim spent his early career
writing firmware, then switched to the Internet just as soon as the
dotcom boom was coming to an end. He loves open-source software and
the rapidly diversifying world of the Java platform. He has been
writing software since he was a boy, but only started brewing his own
beer a few years ago. He lives in Littleton with his wife and three
children who, despite being the homeschooled children of a programmer
father, don't write as much code as you might think.

*** MAIN PRESENTATION ***

"The Pulse Project"
John Lowe

Description:
This is another look at the SunSPOT platform and using
Java in embedded systems.  This time around we're going
to look at implementing a Java powered pulse rate monitor.
Along the way we will see how using Java and OOP make the
implementation of digital signal processing algorithms
clear by breaking them into small manageable pieces.
We'll also touch on real-time concerns and using RESTful
web services to provide the user interface for our system.

Speaker:
John Lowe is a President of NAND Gate Technologies LLC,
a software development and consulting company. John's area
of expertise includes embedded systems and hardware/software
interaction. John has been developing embedded systems for
the past 15 years including, robotics, analytical
instrumentation and medical monitoring applications.
He has been working with Java since 1996, and has been
attending Java User groups in the Denver/Boulder
area for 12 years.

*** BASIC CONCEPTS ***

"Android"
Demian Neidetcher
Description:

Despite the juggernaut that is the iPhone,
the Android platform is making a splash in the
mobile space.  I'll give context around how we
got here, what the phone is built on, how it's
like Java development and how it's different.
I'll go over the tooling, some high level
concepts around development, deployment and
publishing your application to the world.

Speaker:
Demian Neidetcher has been writing software primarily
with Java in the telecom domain for over 10 years.
He's currently an architect and scrum master for a
small team doing VoIP but still manages to write
code 95% of the time.  He's been a fan of open source
ever since hacking with Python on a 486 running SlackWare.

Driving:
The closest parking is in the Tivoli Parking Structure.
The first time we were on-campus some of our
attendees were charged the same rate as the Pepsi Center
Events game parking. If you park in the garage, explain
that you are there for an on-campus event sponsored by
the Metro State Computer Science Department and CCD Life
and that you are to pay the same rate as students attending
other on-campus events.

Do not park in the NE lot - that is for students only.

If you are going to stay late (we often go to Old Chicago
nearby on Market Street after the meeting) you may want to
park in the uncovered parking lot just West of the Tivoli.

Light Rail:
You can take the Light Rail to either the Pepsi Center
or to the Colfax and Auraria Stop.

From the Pepsi Center Light Rail Stop:
Head South, cross Auraria Parkway at the Light.
The Tivoli is the first building as you get to the campus.

From the Auraria Colfax Station:
Head NW on Main Street, past the Library and Media Center.
Continue North until you get to the Tivoli building.

Scott Davis.pngResource Oriented Architecture and REST - Scott Davis

Google quietly deprecated their SOAP search API at the end of 2006. While this doesn't mean that you should abandon SOAP, it does reflect a growing trend towards simpler dialects of web services. Google joins a number of popular websites (Yahoo!, Amazon, eBay, and others) that offer all of the benefits of web services without all of the complexity of SOAP.

In this talk, we look at the semantic differences between a Service-Oriented Architecture and a Resource-Oriented Architecture. We contrast RPC-centric interfaces with object-oriented interfaces. We discuss HTTP-RPC services that call themselves RESTful, and compare them to fully RESTful web services that leverage HTTP verbs like GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE. We look at RESTful implementations using Java Servlets and exploit Grails' native REST support.

Scott Davis is an author and independent consultant. He is passionate about open source solutions and agile development. He has worked on a variety of Java platforms, from J2EE to J2SE to J2ME (sometimes all on the same project).

He is the co-author of JBoss At Work: A Practical Guide (O'Reilly), quite possibly the world's first agile J2EE book. He is also responsible for several mapping books, including Google Maps API: Adding Where to Your Application (Pragmatic Bookshelf) and GIS for Web Developers: Adding Where to Your Web Applications (Pragmatic Bookshelf). Most recently, Scott wrote Groovy Recipes: Greasing the Wheels of Java(Pragmatic Bookshelf). He is also the Editor in Chief of aboutGroovy.com, a news and information website that tracks the latest developments in Groovy and Grails.

Scott is a frequent presenter at international conferences and local user groups. He was the president of the Denver Java Users Group in 2003 when it was voted one of the top-ten JUGs in North America. After a quick move north, he is currently active in the leadership of the Boulder Java Users Group. Keep up with him at http://www.davisworld.org.

This month, we have a presentation on Jasper Server and another on the
Mule Enterprise Service Bus.

The building doors and/or elevators still lock by 6:30 or so, so try
to join us as early as possible.

Meeting Date and Time:
Tuesday, September 1st, 2009, 5:30 p.m.

Agenda:
5:30 p.m. - Member to Member Networking, Pizza, Drinks (courtesy,
TekSystems)
6:00 p.m. - Basic Concepts Presentation
7:00 p.m. - Advanced Concepts Presentation
8:15 p.m. - Networking at Darcy's (courtesy KForce)

Basic Concepts Topic: Jasper Server - Mike Barker

What do you do now that you've designed your report using iReport? A
robust option is to load your report into JasperServer. Come learn
about the report management server from your friends at Jasper Reports.

Bio:

Mike Barker is the owner of On Track Consulting, Inc. in Littleton.
His 20+ year career as a software developer spans many industries:
defense, semiconductors, medical, financial, and telecommunications.
The last 12 years have been spent in Java, Java, and Java. He has
been the Jasper Reports guy for a client for an 18 month gig that is
about to come to an end.

Main Topic: Mule Enterprise Service Bus, Integration Simplified by
Rich Remington

So the economy is still in shambles. More companies than ever are
working with a downsized workforce. You have been asked (again) to do
more with less. Since that project to replace the legacy back-end
application got shelved for now, you have to go back to the drawing
board and integrate your new web applications with that same legacy
application. And, of course, you have to do it in record time.

This talk introduces Mule ESB, an open source application that can
simplify your integration projects. With an elegant, but simple
architecture, Mule can provide an excellent foundation for your next
integration project. Not only can it speak all the basic protocols
(JMS, HTTP, FTP, Email, JDBC, File, etc.) out of the box, but it comes
with a set of rich features for web services, message routing,
transformation and transaction management. Topics discussed include:
messaging patterns, service endpoints, routing, transformation, &
protocol bridging. And, yes, you will see some code in action!

Bio:

Rich Remington is the owner of Rich Software Inc, a small consulting
firm that specializes in building ESB/SOA software solutions based on
Mule as well as developing web applications for its clients. Rich has
over 25 years experience in software development including over 10
years experience architecting and developing Internet based
applications, including a Java message oriented middleware
application. Additionally, Rich has provided onsite Java and web
development training for various companies as well as taught C
programming courses (when C programming was in vogue) for the
University of Denver, Great West Life, CAP Gemini America, and
Information Handling Services. He is an innovative and strategic
thinker, finding ways to improve information systems, workflows, and
business processes - especially across the enterprise.

*** MAIN PRESENTATION ***

"Concurrency on the JVM Using Scala"
Dr. Venkat Subramaniam

Description:
Multithreading on multi-core processors and
multi-processors bring a new challenge.
Unlike multi tasked systems, your applications
when deployed on these processors get a greater
availability of computing power and resources.
However, the level of abstraction for creating
multithreaded applications is too low in Java.
You are confronted with possibilities of data
contention and thread deadlocks. One of the key
strengths of Scala is its actor based concurrency
model with immutable state. In this presentation
we will exclusively focus on the concurrency API
and facilities of Scala. We will develop a very
practical and realistic application that illustrates
the elegance, simplicity, and strength of Scala
Concurrency.

Speaker:
Dr. Venkat Subramaniam, founder of Agile Developer, Inc.
has trained and mentored thousands of software developers
in US, Canada, Europe, and Asia. He helps his clients
succeed with Agile Development and various software
technologies. He is a veteran speaker at the NFJS
conference series and a frequent invited speaker at
various other international software conferences. He
authored ".NET Gotchas" (O'Reilly), and co-authored
the 2007 Jolt Productivity Award winning book
"Practices of an Agile Developer," and authored
"Programming Groovy" and "Programming Scala"
(all from the Pragmatic Bookshelf).

"Programming Scala"
Dr. Venkat Subramaniam
Description:

Scala is a nice language to program on the JVM.
It's concise, scalable, powerful, expressive,
and integrates well with Java. Your day-to-day
tasks like processing XML, matching patterns
of various expressions, working with collections
and String, are all made simpler, concise, and
elegant by the Scala language syntax and
build-in libraries. In this presentation you
will immerse into the Scala goodness, and
learn how you can make use of it in your Java
applications.

7:20pm      Using Enterprise Integration Patterns As Your Camel Jockey - Bruce Snyder
8:30pm Beers at Baker Street Pub (first round on us!)

Workflow Systems: Myths, Truths and Wishful Thinking - Brandon Satrom

If workflow is simply about the coordination of work, why is it such a point of contention for most technologists? Do workflow systems really enable a Business Analysts to change a production process, or are they a waste of time and resources, not to mention a problem that a solid developer could solve with a hundred lines of code? The goal of this talk is to demystify the idea of "workflow," and to discuss what place, if any, a Workflow System might have in your problem domain. We'll discuss Workflow Systems by example with Microsoft's Workflow Foundation tools (3.x and 4.0) and explore popular, low-ceremony options for doing "workflow" (NServiceBus, MassTransit, etc.). We'll end the session with an open discussion on workflow tools and collaboratively craft some tactical recommendations on when and why to use workflow in your organization.

Using Enterprise Integration Patterns As Your Camel Jockey - Bruce Snyder

The revered Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIP) book is indispensable for handling messaging-based integration. But utilizing these patterns in your own code can be tedious if you have to write the code from scratch every single time. Wouldn't it be nice if you had a simple API to make the use of these patterns easier? Enter Apache Camel, an integration framework that provides a straightforward path to implementing the EIP patterns. Using Camel's POJO-based approach and it's Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) for expressing message routes, the complexity of integrations is decreased dramatically.

This talk will explain the EIP patterns, walking through many example implementations using Apache Camel via both its Java DSL and its Spring DSL. So come take a Camel ride!

"TDD in Grails"

*** MAIN PRESENTATION ***

"NetKernel"
Randy Kahle

Description:
NetKernel is a software platform that runs on the JVM.
It is based on a very small pure REST kernel and includes
tools and services in its stack (much like Unix). Like the
Web, everything in NetKernel is identified by a URI.

NetKernel started as a research project in HP Labs in
1999. Since 2002, the technology has been advanced by
1060 Research. We are releasing NetKernel 4 on 10/9/2009
and this represents a major step forward in the
refinement of the abstraction and platform.

NetKernel is used by large corporations (e.g. BlueShield
of California) governments (e.g. US Army, Intelligence
Agencies) and small companies. All report the same -
applications built on NetKernel run faster, require
less code, scale with cores and in general, simplify
systems.

More information is at http://www.1060research.com
(Note: while the company is located in the UK, I
work remotely from Fort Collins).

In the presentation I will present the fundamentals
of the abstraction, demonstrate example working
applications and explain the architecture and answer
questions.

Speaker:
Randy Kahle has a BA from EE/CS Rice University, and an MBA from Dartmouth.
He has worked at GTE Sylvania, HP, Microsoft, MageLang Institute,
with his own consulting company and lately with 1060 Research.
He worked with Java since the early days and with MageLang
institute was an early consultant, instructor and architectural advisor
to investment banks, manufacturers and service companies.

*** BASIC CONCEPTS ***

"TDD in Grails"
Tim Berglund

Description:
Not many of us question that TDD is the right way to
write software, but not many of us really practice it
either. Even fewer of us do it when writing a web app,
and with good reason: web app code is usually coupled
to a framework, and the framework is usually coupled
to a web server on one end and a database on the other.
All this coupling does not set us up for testing success.

Grails 1.1 introduces several features that make it
easy and truly productive to create a web application
while testing first. In this talk, you'll learn how
to use Domain and Controller mocking to write unit
tests that can be run quickly and easily from the
IDE or from the command line. TDD with 100% coverage
had always been possible in Grails, but for the
first time the tools make it the kind of thing you'll
want to do. Learn to use the new features of the
framework to build your web app the right way the
first time.

Speaker:
Tim Berglund runs a software consulting firm called
the August Technology Group (www.augusttechgroup.com),
which provides training, coaching, and development
services to customers building web applications with
open-source tools, especially with the Grails framework.
His technology interests span web applications, business
integration, data architecture, and software architecture,
but his greatest passion is to help developers improve in
their craft. He is a frequent speaker at local user groups,
and helps lead IASA Denver (www.iasadenver.org) and the
Denver Open Source User Group (www.denveropensource.org).
He is currently writing the book, Deploying Grails
(to be published by O'Reilly), due out in 2010. He lives
in Littleton, CO with his wife and three children.

Hey All,

In this down economy, everyone should be brushing up on their tech skills. In terms of cost, it's hard to beat "free".

Sun is offering a series of free (as in, "no cost / no catch / no kidding") courses as they smoke test their new Java EE 6 courseware.

I'm teaching a JPA 2.0 course this week (sorry, too late to catch mine). The next week is a JSP/Servlets 3.0 course. The following week is an EJB 3.1 course.

The courses are being held on the Sun Broomfield campus. If you are interested, please respond TODAY OR TOMORROW to Kelby Zorgdrager <kelby@...>.

Candidly, there are some pretty nice new features in the Java EE 6 stack. You can pull down the NetBeans 6.8 beta and try to learn 'em yourself, or you can attend these training classes, complete with printed course materials, hands-on labs, and knowledgeable instructors.

Hope to see you there,

The meeting:
This month, we have a presentation on XMPP. the open instant messaging protocol by Clark Hobbie, and a unique talk by Java+hardware expert, John Lowe, on the Pulse Project.

The building doors and/or elevators still lock by 6:30 or so, so try to join us as early as possible.

Meeting Date and Time:
Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009, 5:30 p.m.

Agenda:
5:30 p.m. - Member to Member Networking, Pizza, Drinks (courtesy, TekSystems)
6:00 p.m. - Basic Concepts Presentation
7:00 p.m. - Advanced Concepts Presentation
8:15 p.m. - Networking at Darcy's (courtesy KForce)

Talks:
Clark Hobbie on The XMPP Messaging Protocol

This talk examines the protocol that Google uses for instant messaging protocol: XMPP.  The protocol has many innovative features like prioritization and streaming XML that make it interesting in its own right and this talk will explore them -- but wait, there's more!

XMPP offers additional opportunities for the greater applications space.  The IM model offers a convenient solution to the problem of polling over HTTP.  What's more the security model, message storing and strong security are also solutions to common enterprise problems.

Is XMPP an answer to these issues or is it another elegant solution in search of a problem?  Find out at this talk.

Bio:

Clark Hobbie is a Denver area consultant specializing in OO, Java and web-enabled systems.  I've been working in the field for 15+ years and have a BS and an MS in CompSci.

John Lowe on The Pulse Project

This is a look at the SunSPOT platform (which has both open source hardware and software) and using Java in embedded systems.  In this presentation we're going to look at implementing a Java powered pulse rate monitor.  Along the way we will see how using Java and OOP make the implementation of digital signal processing algorithms clear by breaking them into small manageable pieces.  We'll also touch on real-time concerns and using RESTful web services to provide the user interface for our system.

Bio:

John Lowe is a President of NAND Gate Technologies LLC, a software development and consulting company. John's area of expertise includes embedded systems and hardware/software interaction. John has been developing embedded systems for the past 15 years including, robotics, analytical instrumentation and medical monitoring applications. He has been working with Java since 1996, and has been attending Java User groups in the Denver/Boulder area for 12 years.

Subject: Agile software development training - Take your software design and development skills to a whole new level
virtual_geni...

Technical skills are important, but software design skills are something that every software developer should be improving. And even more so for software architects - these skills are foundational to everything that we do. Our software must be able to accommodate change while managing complexity, and do that in a sustainable way.

As developers and architects we typically devote little attention to honing our modeling and design skills as we develop software. Yet so much of what we do is design and modeling work, and the quality of the designs we implement has enormous implications for the systems we deliver.

As part of addressing this need, my company Virtual Genius has partnered with Seattle-based firm Techniques of Design to begin providing software design and development training courses in Denver starting this December. We are starting with an agile software development essentials course first, and will start providing additional courses on Domain-Driven Design in the first quarter of next year.

Agile Software Development Essentials Course - December 1st-3rd

Our first course on December 1-3 is being taught by master trainer David Bernstein. Full details are available at the Agile Software Development Essentials course registration page. This is an awesome course!

If you are looking to sharpen your software design and development skills then you should not miss this course. Learn how design patterns, advanced object-oriented design and agile development techniques converge to enable you to find and develop elegant solutions. Discover how to better evaluate tradeoffs in design that can then be immediately applied to virtually any problem.

Attendees that register before 10/31 can use the discount code 2BEAGILE to save $300 off the cost of the December 1-3 course.

Regards,
Paul.

Design is easy. All you do is stare at the screen until drops of blood form on your forehead.

*** MAIN PRESENTATION ***

"Building SOFEA Applications with Grails and GWT"
Matt Raible

Description:
In early 2009, Matt participated in a major
enhancement of a high-traffic well-known internet
site. The company wanted to quickly re-architect
their site and use a modern Ajax framework to do
it with. An Ajax Framework evaluation was done to
help the team choose the best framework for their
skillset. The application was built with a SOFEA
architecture using GWT on the frontend and
Grails/REST on the backend.

This talk will cover how Matt's team came to
choose GWT and Grails, as well as stumbling
blocks they encountered along the way. In
addition, we'll explore many topics such as
raw GWT vs. GXT and SmartGWT, the GWT-Plugin,
modularizing your code, multiple EntryPoints,
integration testing and JSON parsing with
Overlay Types.

Speaker:
Matt Raible resides in Denver, Colorado, where he runs
Raible Designs, a consultancy that specializes in open
source Java frameworks and Ajax development. Matt has
been surrounded by computers for most of his life, even
though he grew up without electricity in the backwoods
of Montana.

Matt is an author (Spring Live, Pro JSP), active Java
open-source contributor, and blogger on
raibledesigns.com. He is the founder of AppFuse,
a project which allows you to get started quickly
with Java frameworks, as well as a committer on the
Apache Roller project.

Matt's presentations can be downloaded from his website.
Contact him if you can't find one of his presentations.

*** BASIC CONCEPTS ***

"How to Become and Independent Consultant: Panel Discussion Q & A"

Description:
How To Become an Independent Consultant: Panel discussion; Q & A
This session explores the trials and tribulations of an independent
consultant. How do you find contracts? Should you setup an LLC, an
S-Corp or just be a sole proprietorship? What about health insurance
and benefits? Are recruiters helpful or hurtful? Learn lots of tips
and tricks to get your dream job and your ideal lifestyle. Ski season
is coming up after all. ;-)

*** DIRECTIONS ***
We will be meeting at the Tivoli Building
which is closest to the Pepsi Center side
of the campus.

Here's a link to the Campus Map followed
by the link to the PDF:

Driving:
The closest parking is in the Tivoli Parking Structure
or directly across from the West entrance of the Tivoli
Building using the surface parking.

*** SPONSORS ***

Thanks to our Denver JUG sponsors for supporting the Java community:

- TekSystems for providing food and drink at the meeting

- K*FORCE for sponsoring our books for door prizes.

- VACO Technologies for sponsoring some food at
 Old Chicago after the meeting.

- No Fluff Just Stuff Symposium for sponsoring our room.

Our next regular monthly event is Monday next week at 5pm at the PPA Event Center (note the change in location!).

We will start with an open discussion on emergent design during the fuller catered meal, and have two great presenters lined up. We are combining the event with Agile Denver, so come along to meet the agile community and learn together.

You must RSVP by this Friday at the latest so we can ensure the catered meal is sufficient. A big thanks to Rally Software for generously sponsoring both the catering and the larger venue rental for this event.

Full details are at www.iasadenver.org.
