Hello, DMELDers -

I am talking to a client who wants to be able to 'single source' from a
written document to Flash. They have printed manuals that they want to
be able to write and have the content available as a printed doc, a PDF
and to have at least the text and graphics be incorporated in a Flash
CBT. Right now they are writing manuals in MS Publisher and outputting
them to PDF. They then send the PDF to India where, by some process, an
XML file is pulled out of the PDF. That is sent back to the states to
their (former) Flash developer who built a parser to read in the content
from the XML.

After just one meeting with them where they explained this, it just
seemed intuitive that there must be a better way to do this..I think any
solution would be acceptable if.

1. They could write and update the manuals just once and have the
content be readable able by a Flash program
2. There could be little or no programming of the Flash code when
a new update was needed.
3. The Flash program could 'break away' from the manual-based text
and images occasionally, and provide a custom Flash interactive exercise
or game
4. The Flash version must be SCORM compliant (this part I know how
to do)

The topic of the manuals and the CBTs is Introductory Biology, Chemistry
and Physics for upper level high school and lower division college
students.

I'm not sure how wedded they are to Publisher or PDF.the latter 'might'
be necessary for tasks other than just printing hard copy; I don't know
that part.

First, what additional information would you be asking the client for
when if you were analyzing the situation?

Finally, thanks in advance for any comments, thoughts or experiences
with a similar problem.

-Marc Lee

FlashPaper sounds pretty good. But I would also check into ePublisher from
Quadralay. I think RTF could be used as a conversion method between MS
Publisher and MS Word, esp. if the client is not doing anything too fancy with
page layout and flows and so forth. With ePublisher, the client would have
many robust options for single-sourcing.

Philip,

I would be happy to help. Since I am brand new to the group, for now I would
prefer to volunteer under someone's guidance. I have a good amount of
experience with event coordination. In my previous lives I was a catering
manager in the hospitality industry (hotel and golf) and for a short period of
time (about one year) I ran a singles organization that required event set up.
So I might best be put to work if you need help with putting together events and
coordinating any related efforts via phone, email, website development, etc.
etc. Since I am a new mother, I do not have a large abundance of extra time but
I can primarily be available during regular office hours.

I would think it would be interesting to somehow pool data of best practices. A
survey of best tools, i.e. hardware, software, etc. best LMS, best design, best
resources, etc. That might be a fun project to work on as a group in a mixer
type setting at an event or online (or both for the blended experience!). Since
technology is always changing, it would benefit everyone - it would help direct
new developers down good paths and keep experts fresh on the latest and greatest
options.

All (and Lisa) .seems we are likely to burn out our newest member.
Isn't that always the way..

Lisa, speaking as one who (like Phil) has been around from Day One, your
ideas and your enthusiasm sound great. We've kind of burned Becky
Haugen out as program manager (what, about 5 years' worth??). If you
want to try to organize something like a best practices/best tools thing
that would be great. It sounds a little ambitious. Again speaking as
one of the old-timers - we have often done tool overview type meetings.

One possibility might be to have some of the best practitioners come in
(someone like Bill Horton comes to mind) and discuss the tools he tends
to find his customers use or ones he recommends. The same could be done
with someone like Patty Shank. And there are plenty of others - but I'm
thinking of someone on the 'user' end, as opposed to someone selling a
particular tool, which of course is fine in its way also.

Another thing that's really relevant now is Web 2.0 (especially for some
of us still getting our heads around Web 1.0..and then there's 3.0
also). If you know someone who's making headway with things like
twitter or MySpace or YouTube in training settings, that would be the
basis of a great program.

Of course it's easy for me to throw ideas out there..the contacting,
scheduling, announcing, adjusting, etc - that's the actual work. If
you're interested, please go for it. And feel free to contact me
offline for anything I can add.

Glad you're aboard, Lisa!

Incidentally (and I've been meaning to post something on this since last
August)..January will be the DMAUG/DMELD 10th anniversary. Has anyone
an interest in just an anniversary party with cake, streamers, and
toasts - no real agenda??..I'll do my best to get some of the original
hands like Monty Waggoner, Matt Cambron, and Joe Schultz to show
up..Just a thought.

Subject: [DMELD] 2010 Programs & Volunteers

Hi, all. It is time to think about DMELD programs and volunteers for
next year.

If you have a program idea - or better yet if you would like to
present a program - please e-mail me offlist. I will pass along your
suggestions to the others who help arrange the programs.

DMELD could also use some volunteer help. We could use some help next
year arranging meeting programs, publicizing the programs, and so on.
Volunteering does not require much time; and it connects you with
industry experts, which can help further your career. Please e-mail me
offlist if you would like to volunteer.

Looking forward to hearing from you. ...pt

Thanks to Lisa, Alida, and the others who replied, either publicly or
privately.

From the replies we have these suggestions for future programs:

* Best practices for e-learning. Are some DMELDers available to
participate in a panel discussion? E-mail me.

* SCORM compliance, and what that entails for e-learning developers.
Do we have a SCORM expert here who could do this presentation? E-mail
me.

* Customizing Articulate software and courses. A presenter has already
volunteered.

Before any of that though, DMELD is thinking about a public 10th
Anniversary celebration early next year. We'll keep you advised.

But we can still use your program ideas. If you have any additional
program suggestions (or better yet, if you can suggest a program that
you can present), please e-mail me.

Similarly, if you can volunteer in 2010, please e-mail. We could still
use some help writing, editing, or sending out meeting notices. Or if
you'd like to help with something else, let me know.

I look forward to your e-mails (preferably off list) about programs
and volunteering. Once we have tallied up all the replies, we will try
to put the right people in touch with each other. And get the ball
rolling for 2010, which will be the start of our eleventh year.

Thanks. ...pt

My guess, based on experience in recruiting as well as in technical
communications, is this: There's no reql job req here at all. It's a known scam:
intelligence gathering (personal data) via fake job reqs in a down market
wherein more people are likely to "bite" without as much critical thought.

The end result of these scams is that they have a bunch of the unsuspecting
"candidate's" personal data that they can turn around and sell to other
scammers.

That's probably all this is, and unfortunately, it's not going to be the last
one we see.

There are a lot of fraudulent "recruiters" operating from overseas today in
organised deception. They're using U.S.-based phone numbers that forward to
overseas call centers, and their "agents" are trained to tell you they're in
Dallas or where ever.

Other red flags:
* "marketing surveys" associated with the req.
* "IQ tests" or "personality tests" associated with the req.
* Any req that asks the candidate to pay for anything whatsoever--this isn't
part of legitimate recruiting.
* Sales (particularly, of training/education) associated with the req.
* Be generally wary of a "recruiter" who cannot or will not answer questions
about the client and the position--yet wants you to give him your personal data.

The vast majority of posts I've seen on this alias appear to be legitimate.

Does anybody have experience with getting basic user data from the LMS into
an Articulate course? We are using the new SDK and are not having any
problems packaging for the LMS or anything like that, but we don't see any
documentation (Articulate is a little weak there) on getting data, (in this
case the learner's name), from the LMS to use in the lesson. I'm sure this
is a standard SCORM field, so I should think it would be a fairly simple
procedure. It's just such a commonly used one I'd be surprised if we would
have to custom write some ActionScript procedure to do it. Other people must
have done something like this, for example, to place a Welcome back
___________ message for example. Or, as in our case, to populate a
Certificate of Completion field.

Thanks,

Bob,

There may be a built-in way to do this in Articulate..and if so that
would be the way to go.

For a possible 'roll-your-own' solution:

You should be able to write a script in one of the Flash files for the
course to extract the name from the LMS. I'm not sure which one that
would be, but Pete would probably know based on the customization you're
doing with the SDK.

I found this function in the file called API.js that should be in the
SCORM package you create.

-------------------------------------------------------------JS
FUNCTION-----------------------------------------------------

function GetStudentName(){
             WriteToDebug("In GetStudentName");
             ClearErrorInfo();

             if (! IsLoaded()){
                         SetErrorInfo(ERROR_NOT_LOADED, "Cannot make
calls to the LMS before calling Start");
                         return "";
             }

             return objLMS.GetStudentName();
}

You should be able to use the Flash function callExternalInterface() to
reference this API function and it should return the name to the Flash
piece. Since ExternalInterface typically means 'the html file that
launched me' in any SWF, you may have to do an 'include' to this JS file
in the player.html. Not sure of exactly how that would all work, but
probably Pete will know what to do.

I've done something similar to signal the completion of a course so it
should work.

Others who have done work on this side of SCORM may know much more about
this. (sounds good in theory, though)

The Boulder Writers Alliance invites you to join us for a presentation
by Bart Windrum: “Independent Publishing 101.”

It is possible that few pursuits are as dreamt of — and romanticized —
as authoring a book. An increasingly viable (some would say necessary)
option is to publish your own work. No longer called “vanity”
publishing, independent publishing has come of age.

What does it take to publish a book under your own imprint? What must
you consider? What are the trade-offs between independent and
conventional publishing by the “majors”? What are the steps? What are
some of the details? What does it cost? How do you market? What can
you earn? Where can you find guidance to help you through the maze?

Come with a blank notepad or an open text file and every question on
your mind (pose them in advance directly to
Bart@...).
We will range as far and wide as time and knowledge allow.

When: Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Program Schedule: 6:30 - 7:00 p.m.: Networking and light snack
7:00 - 8: 30 p.m.: Business meeting and program

Where: NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research)
1850 Table Mesa Drive, Boulder, Colorado 80307-3000

All BWA presentations are free and open to the public, unless
otherwise noted.

About the Speaker:

(www.AxiomAction.com):
• Notes from the Waiting Room: Managing a Loved One’s End of Life
Hospitalization, by Bart Windrum (2009 Colorado Book Award Finalist
