hi Andy,
Ok I got the Charlize today. Hooked up to a 9V simple adapter, quite a big
one non switching type, adde3d a 1500 uf cap to the PS, soldered a pair of
input RCA females, and (very barely able to) clip my speaker cable to the
circuit directly, and there is sound!
I used my mono FM tuner ( REL) to drive it to listen just 1 ch. The sound is
mellow on my Rega small floor standing speaker. But it does have a big sound
and good resolution. Then I used it to drive my 755A. Initially the sound is
a bit hard, after a few hours it mellowed down.
For the size, it is very good and convenient amp!
To compare to my tube amps, I think it could easily perform better then most
tubes amp that is not at optimum condition. But it still would not have the
air and weight for a good tube amps that is at optimum condition, and most
tube amps are not operating under optimum condition!! So this little amp
that could take simple power supply from 9-12V could sound better the those
tube amps indeed!
I will build a proper power supply, tweak it a bit then listen a bit longer.
What I could see is that the output printed circuit traces from the coils
are a bit too narrow and definitely it would not be good for the sound.
Unless it is designed that way to produce certain characteristic of the
sound.
Best rgds
William Lee
