has anyone helped you with this yet? (I wanted to ask before I went
all out trying to explain it all to you.)

You get the files to the left in the FILES menu (above PHOTOS).

Personally, I was going to try to get the Uberdotcomments working --
because I keep getting a lot of spam using the 2 dot 5 version. :(
Idiot spammers.

The spam doesn't show up on any of the comment windows, but writes to
the php file of the script itself. (it is annoying to get 300 spams in
the email).

:) but the comment script does work. I've used it for... I guess 3
years now.

If you still need help with this, IM me on AIM - perotheus is my SN there.

Just installed dotcomments today, set up a test page and it works
great! But a problem occured when I tried including the link in my
actual blog.

All my pages are in php, but the form that publishes the blog,
writes to a txt-file which is included on the blog-page. I included
all the javascript-coding there (the header code and the other one),
but the link gets messed up and the popup-window won't show
(obviously, since the link gets messed up).

The link (showed in the status-bar) looks something like this:
http://www.mysite.com/"javascript:viewcomments(99966)/"

It seems it is trying to make a directory of the js-link:P
Strange thingy.

The blogform writes to a php-script, and the link-code...
<a href="javascript:viewComments(999966)">
<? echo commentCount(999966); ?></a>
...is just another variable I called $link which is written to the
txt-file like the other input fields.

Is there any way to fix this?

Dotcomments works fine and everything, the link just gets messed up
when included in the blog.txt-file.

Thanks! Have a nice day:)

Oh, it's not for me...it's for the countless others who come to this Group and search the archives.  ;)  I've contributed a few tidbits here and there, but my comments have been up and running beautifully for a long while now.  :)

No worries, though!  Glad you got it sorted out!

Or more precisely, your page http://pixeltear.l2p.net/blogt.php (it
always increases the amount of help you'll get if you don't make people
click a link, then dig a URL out of an iframe, to find the source you're
talking about.)

From readme.txt:

$comments_path [REQUIRED]
This variable stores the exact path on your server in which comments.php
will be located.  i.e. if your weblog is hosted at
http://www.mydomain.com/weblog/, $comments_path =
"http://www.mydomain.com/weblog/".   Note that this path MUST end with a
forward slash (/).

Since your comment form is submitting to
http://www.pixeltear.l2p.net/blogt.php/comments.php I'd guess you have
it set to http://www.pixeltear.l2p.net/blogt.php/ rather than
http://www.pixeltear.l2p.net/ which is where comments.php is.

Hey all,

I've been using Phil's dotcomments and they have been working great
for me for a number of years, however, I recently upgraded to Win2k3,
IIS 6.0 and PHP 5. After fighting to get PHP5 funtioning with IIS, I
finally succeeded. However, my comments no longer funtion like they did.

Commentcount.php still functions perfectly, however, the comments
themselves will not load even though all are still there and counted
correctly. I've checked everything - permissions included. Permissions
don't seem to be an issue because I can read/write to disc as an
internet user. When I write a new comment, is saves it back my
comment file as .comment with no numbers in front. That comment
becomes available to every single post becuase it has no unique
identifying number. The comments that DO have unique identifying
numbers aren't being read by comments.php anymore.

Please help,

Ah, I'd seen an example and didn't realize it was storing time in Unix

This info can be found around line 27 in your comments.php file:
$thisComment = $commentDate . '[+]' . $commentName . '[+]' . $commentMail . '[+]' . $commentText . '[+]' . $commentSite . '[+]' . getenv('REMOTE_ADDR') . "\n";

So, it's in this order:
  1. comment date
  2. commenter's name
  3. commenter's email address
  4. comment text
  5. commenter's website URL
  6. commenter's IP address
Hope this helps!  ;)

Subject: [dotcomments-support] Format of comments file?

Dear all,

This is a slightly odd question, but can someone tell me the format of
the text file that dotcomments stores comments in?

Specifically, I understand that it stores each comment on a single
line, delimited by [+]. What fields are separated by the [+] and what
order are they in?

[The reason I ask: I have comments in another system that uses a
similar format, though not identical, and want to import them into MT.
There's a script to do this for dotcomments-formatted files, and I
think it would be easier to turn my existing comments file into a
dotcomments one rather than rewriting the script, since I don't know
any scripting.)

Thanks.

Angela-

I appreciate your suggestions. I was able to figure
out the problem and they work :) functional comments
woo!

I have not configured grey duck's or uber comments
yet. I fixed my spam filters so they take the
unnumbered comments (that aren't linked or referenced
to any particular post " New Comment [] " and my spam
filters stick them in a junk folder :) it's just a
temporary work around until I have time to deal with
the issue.

Thanks again!

You may want to check and see if your server's PHP configuration has "register_globals" turned off.  I've found that dotcomments requires it to be on in order to function properly.

Hope this helps!

I've had the original version of Dotcomments on my two blogs since
April 2004...

http://www.baseballrelated.com/
http://www.ellwanger.tv/blog/

...and everything was working fine until sometime near the end of April
2005.  Now comments (new and old) aren't actually showing up when
looking at the site, although new comments do get saved as a file (and
e-mailed to me); all posts say "0 comments" and result in "no comments
found," even when there are comments there.

Both my sites are hosted by Dreamhost; the only thing I can see that
might possibly be a problem is that they apparently turned off the
"allow_url_fopen" PHP configuration on April 20th, but that's not
something I see in the Dotcomments scripts (just "@fopen," which I
assume is something different).

Anyone have any ideas?

FIXED!!!

My problem was in the portion of code you place in the top of your
HTML template.

This is how the script is now, and the counts are working.
If you have problems copy/pasting this from this page, email me and
I'll send you the code in a .txt file.

<?
function commentCount($n) {
   // set the same values from comments.php
   $bannedIP = array("200.206.239.236","200.18.97.113");
   $banIPMode = "0";
   $comments_path = "";
   // Don't edit from this point
   if($file = @fopen($comments_path . "comments/$n.comment", 'r')) {
     $thisFile = fread($file, '1000000');
     $thisFile = explode("\n", trim($thisFile));
     fclose($file);
     $comments = sizeof($thisFile);
     if($banIPMode)
       for($i = 0; $i < sizeof($thisFile); $i++) {
         $thisComment = explode('[+]', $thisFile[$i]);
         if($thisComment[6] || $banIPMode != 4 &&
in_array($thisComment[5], $bannedIP)) $comments--;
       }
     if($comments == 1) {$comments .= " comment";} else {$comments .= "
comments";}
   } else
     $comments = "0 comments";
   return $comments;
}
?>

(put this above your <head> tag, at the very top of your html
document)

Some idiot spammer (but I repeat myself) hit one of my hosted sites
over the last day or so, generating all of about 10 emails to the site
owner... but not generating actual comments. How, you ask? They were
calling the script blind, without a query string to indicate which
entry the "comment" belonged to.

And so, I've implemented a check for 'getenv('QUERY_STRING')' that
silently kills the script if none is found. If anyone wants my quickly
kludged code, just drop me a private note.

(This is against "regular" dotcomments, mind you, not uber or any of
the other new variants.)

Your authorization might be failing if Safe Mode is turned on on your
server. If that's the case (as it was for me) you can remove the
authorization code from the comments and resave the file as something
else (like commentsadmin.php) store that file in a seperate directory
that you can protect via .htaccess or whatever method you want. then
point your admin link to that file. Hopefully that's clear. That's
what I did and though I'm still tweaking things, it seems to work just
fine.

Submitting the comment form results in a refresh of the comments
window -- I get no comment added, no "comment status" messages,
nothing. Also, the cookie doesn't seem to be "sticking," since I have
to retype my info every time the window opens.

username and password, the script refuses to accept the username and
password I enter, even though they match my variable values in
comments.php. (When I set the $admin variable to "true," I can see
the ban/delete links just fine, but I'm prompted for a username and
password when I click on one, and, of course, the username and
password I enter are rejected.)

it's doing the same thing. I've double-checked my form code to make
sure I didn't leave anything out versus your version of the form, and
the only variables I omitted from the top of the script are the style
variables (since all my styles are done through classes on a
stylesheet anyway).

Double-check your server's PHP configuration.  In php.ini, dotcomments requires register_globals to be On.  Found this out the hard way, after using a custom php.ini to appease two other scripts I'm running that ask it be turned Off.  When I turned register_globals Off, cookies were not generated (to auto-fill form contents) and comments were not stored when the form was submitted.

Hope this helps!

Subject: [dotcomments-support] Solution for "0 comments".??

I am still trying to work on a solution for this. I am weary of the
problem by now. I have checked the first section of code and re-placed
it twice. I have checked the bit of code in the <head of the document.
I have checked the script that opens the comment window. I don't know
enough about PHP to know if that file has an error.

I am at a loss. If I manage to find the solution I will document it
here (and keep the information for future problems people have since
it is common).

The count used to work. The comments post - the only thing not working
is the count. ANY help or suggestions is appreciated - many people are
stuck on 0 waiting for assistance.

Thank you.

I am still having some issues with comments being recorded and
showing on the comments page. I have went over and over it all.

Who knows, could be like usual, I skipped something once again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was wondering if there were new *updated* versions of
Uberdotcomments to be made available in the near future.

I have the script ready to implement, but something happened to the
txt file (not available) and when I used it the comment count did now
appear (it merely read: 'comment' or 'comments'with no number (0) or
otherwise.

:) I'll glady use it if i can get the correct format for that bit of
code -which somehow became corrupted or scrambled in the txt file I
have on my hard drive. (the file gives me a no longer available error
when I try to download it now).

I think the changes made are great and I'm excited about trying it out.

Thanks to all of you who know enough about scripts -so that I don't
have to. :-D

Nice work with the spam protection by the way! I have not implmented
this yet, I was wanting to ask a question first.

Does this /version of dotcomments allow you to import and keep the old
comment files as well?

Hello All,

I've just learned that the final dotcomments distribution (from 2001)
can be exploited to send outgoing spam. The hosting company I use has
disabled my /comments directory until I resolve this problem. The
related posts here seem to refer to spam appearing within comments or
email harvesting, not the exploit I'm getting hit with (perhaps I've
mis-understood the posts?).

Anyway, has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a fix?

Thanks for your time.
